1.
Hello from France, I am this guy and I can't get these pu's anymore... so. I did them for my basses first , improving, if possible, their mounting but I've keep all the essential part of the "darkstar" same magnets, bobine, laminated core and pole piece sizes. and it works! (some new pictures on the site) have a nice day. DR
Very good. Do you have a link for the site? I couldn't find it.
 2. I don't read BGM but I like the albums a lot.
 3. With that choice, I'd say the Bronco definitely wins.
 4. Check this thread too: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/123001-late-60s-beat-pop-bass-stylesound
 5. ... and don't play too near to the bridge.
 6.
It sounds indeed like a Fender Bass VI, but you can get in the same vibe with a P-bass, strung with flatwounds, use a thick pick, and mute the strings with a piece of foam. I do it all the time. Qua amps: amps weren't really used in the studio, the bass just went "straight in the wall", maybe via a tube compressor. Here you see a lipsynch from that song, and here a jazz-bass is used. Herbie Flowers, the British recording artist is known for it's tick-tack sound, and he uses a 1959 (yes, it's a prototype) jazz bass, strung with thick flatwounds, and a pick:
Everlasting Love is Russ Stableford not Herbie Flowers but otherwise, yes, Jazz bass, flatwounds, heavy gauge pick.
 7.
No - Wayne will have to grow some of these:
I expect there will be a photoshop ....
 8.
Wayne - your bass is like a stream of Bat's piss - - - - - It will shine out like a shaft of gold when all around is dark
... but will it have echo location facilities?
 9.
I've measured my bass and it's kind of about 30.5" but the link below says otherwise: http://www.njaz.com/...rs/starfire.htm I measured from the nut to the twelfth fret and doubled it.
That website is wrong, your measurement is correct at 30.5"
 10.
Sorry to hijack, but how do you fretless guys monitor your playing in a live situation? Often as not I struggle to hear myself playing fretted bass in the band where intonation isn't an issue (as long as you hit the correct fret )
You've got to be able to hear yourself or all is lost so, if you really are having trouble hearing ... ... get a powered PA speaker on a stand right next to your ear.
 11.
Why would I want an amp?
... because it's not a double bass sized body, and even if it was you'd want an amp.
 12.

You need to actually speak - it's not enough to point at other posts. I stand exactly by what I said.
 13.
That's the thing. How much amp work is that opinion based on? Ever been inside it? Got gutshots from when you did? Opinions don't gain validity without basis.
He was just talking about how it sounded to his ear. That is a valid basis and whether he's been inside it is irrelevant.
 14.
There are such things as tube bass amps but are they the only way you will reach quality tone to it's highest level...
There is no such thing as 'quality tone to its highest level'. There's only the many sounds that people are happy using for the music they are playing. And if you play with more than one band then that sound can vary.
 15. Find a guy with a van who wants to be your roadie. Pay him an equal share and get him to fetch and carry as well as drive. Easier said than done but there you are.
 16.
OK, so if I write IMO or IME after everything I write, it makes it ok then? What he has written is misguided and probably based on very little experience. That's the problem with this site. People could be listening to the advice of people who have sh*t gear and think they sound good.
Or they could be listening to you shouting your mouth off, but I expect most of them aren't.
 17.
Do an A/B test with an all valve amp and a hybrid with a valve in the preamp and you'll see the massive difference. Come on guys. I know solid state amps are cheaper, lighter and cost less to mantain but please don't tell me they sound better! Perhaps some people are trying to convince themselves.
Sounds like you're trying to convince yourself as well as the rest of us, but ok, I'll remember that, even though I've already done years of testing. And which bass and which strings should I get so I can be like you?
 18. I could hardly resist buying them - but I did resist eventually.
 19.
Rubbish!
Oh no it's not!
 20. That was dreadfully dull - definitely the song was at the wrong gig. Why was Billy Cox any worse than the rest?
 21. I used to have one of these and really loved it - no space for another now though. But isn't it 30" scale and not 32"
 22.
Aguilera Guitars has closed down recently. I think Paul must have given-up the unequal struggle. Phil
Oh, didn't know, that's a shame.
 23. Phil, I don't know for sure that he would do the job you want but Paul Aguilera at Aguilera Guitars in Edward Street might be worth a try - he builds acoustics so I imagine he knows what he's doing. I've only ever had him do small jobs for me, like a new nut, but he is local to you. It might be worth talking to him.
 24. If there are other bands I put my bass back in its case and out of the way of others. If we're the only band I put it on a mini Hercules stand, out of the way of others.
