Chuck would make sense, thanks, especially that sort slappy bit right at the beginning. Where do you find out from google? Def not JJ, the Tammi Terrell/Marvin Gaye version def is JJ (also superb bass playing, a classic!). It seems to me like a semi-written bass part, ie some sections are required to follow other instruments and repeats etc whereas others the bass player is allowed to vamp and the bass player hasn't been able to develop it much but, from his experience and ability, interprets the music with panache. One day, I'll get there. One day.
Careful because there are two JJs here - James Jamerson and Jerry Jemmott (who is definitely on the 'Live at the Filmore' Aretha version)
I have the pleasure of studying this track as a cover, apart from the hair prickling singing and the lovely string parts, the bass playing is outstanding but I don't know who played. Any ideas anyone?
The 'Live at the Filmore' version is, I believe, Jerry Jemmott.

Lemon Song Better than Jamerson
Yep, big JJ fan here but I agree. Shame there's no recordings of him playing jazz. Or is there.....?
Not quite what you mean I know, but this is Jamerson on upright on a track from the very first (at the time unreleased) Four Tops album. Things take off a little at 1.25.
Bit like asking which one of your kids do you prefer. It was the Lemon Song that made me take up the bass, at the time I was 15 and JPJ was 23 when he recorded Zep II, which gave me 8 years to get to his standard. Needless to say the 8 years has long since gone but still learning and loving it. Mr.Baldwin played on so many sessions the list is endless.
Sorry, pedant alert again, but isn't that one Bobby Ray on bass? -
Although before Led Zep, John Paul Jones was producer and bass player on songs like this:
Pedant alert: I think JPJ was the arranger, orchestral conductor and bassist on the album that's taken from - 'Dusty ... Definitely' - but the producer was John Franz. -
"Time Flies Like An Arrow, Fruit Flies Like A Banana" - Groucho Marx (OK, it's not a song lyric but it should have been!)
Not a lyric either but my favourite Groucho line is: 'I would have beaten him to within an inch of his life but I didn't have a ruler.'
I associate Pub Rock with a dearth of interesting musical ideas and the gloom and boredom of my youth in Ipswich.
'Pub rock' was not really about interesting musical ideas, it was about entertaining an audience while they drank a lot of beer, ensuring that they would come back next week with more mates to do the same again.

Playing guitar in addition to bass...
EssentialTension replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
I'm a much better bassist than I am guitarist but it was on guitar that I first learned the rudiments of music. Knowing something of a second (or third or more) instrument can only be beneficial. -
... this member feels this has been elitist and undemocratic ...
Sean, I can't see any systematic problem with having an 'elite' (call it that if you like) group of members who act to maintain certain standards of the site. Strong candidates are likely to have 'good standing in the community (i.e. are respected), good standing with the other moderators (i.e. no warnings) and have been an active part of the community over an extended period of time (because modding needs a little committment)'. In this case, undemocratic seems to me to be a very good thing. Anyway, if you were to have an election of mods then who would qualify for a vote? All and every member who joined and logged on once or only those with a certain number of posts? Let's say every member with over 750 posts could vote, that's another elite group.
Thanks guys. Mine is like a fretted bass and the dot is between the frets. But on my tuner where the dot is for say the g on the e string its reading a f#. Need to sort the intonation.
Is the open string octave harmonic very close to 17" from the nut? (I'm assuming it's a 34" scale bass.)
Hi all Bare with me on this, im a bit of a thicky when it comes to the tech stuff. I bought a cheapy fretless bass not so long ago without the fret lines/dots, just the dots on the edge of the neck. The guy i bought it of said most fretless basses are tuned just past the next dot, as is this. Now being a fretted lad its pretty easy finding the notes generally without looking apart from the odd riff, but you try doing that on a fretless when the notes on the 3rd, 5th etc are just past the neck dots, its weird. Ive tried retuning so its as a standard fretted bass but its a bit over the place time i get much past the 9th - i will continue to tinker as at the mo im always flat or sharp when im playing Anyone else heard of this "tuning just past the dot" thing? Cheers
I don't quite get what your problem is. A fretless bass is tuned the same as a fretted bass. On an unlined fretless the side dots will commonly be where the note is (although you still have to use your ear). Occasionally, expecially on cheap unlined fretless, as BRX said, the side dots will still be where they would be on a fretted bass, i.e. between the frets. Plus there are some that have no side dots at all like an upright bass.

What is your favourite brand of strings? (Survey)
EssentialTension replied to davidmpires's topic in General Discussion
Out of interest what do you intend to do with the info? IMO the brand is less important than the actual string itself. I would be interested to know if the votes for Thomastik were for anything other than TI Jazz Flats. I use different strings from different makes on different basses, and each string is picked on it's own merits and suitability for the bass. For instance La Bella Hard Rocking Steels are great with my Gus basses but they didn't suit the Yamaha BJ5B at all. Also just because I like round-wound steels from a manufacturer doesn't mean that I'll like their Nickels or flatwounds as well.
This hits the nail on the head. I use TI Jazz Flats but wouldn't use any other Thomastiks. I use La Bella 760 flats but would never use hard rockin steels. -

1963 Fender Jazz bass questions ....
EssentialTension replied to RichZbaraski's topic in Bass Guitars
So, I may have the opportunity to buy a 1963 Fender Jazz bass for £800! Crazy right?!
Correct - an actual for certain 1963 Jazz would not be £800. That would be crazy. -
