1. I'm not overly familiar with the tracks in question but the EHX Deluxe Electric Mistress is a very sweet sounding flanger, you could get a second hand one for less than £100, easily. Its all over a lot of 80s records. Another option is the EHX Stereo Electric Mistress, which does chorus and flange (One or both at the same time). They're pretty cheap too, especially second hand.
2. Hi folks I just picked up an EHX Octave Multplexer second hand. Initial impression is good, but I have a few questions: 1. Anyone got any recommended settings? 2. When I engage it I perceive a volume drop (theres definitely less treble). Is this normal? 3. When I put the sub switch to "off" the sound distorts a bit. It sounds a bit like a fuzz. I quite like it...but it seems odd. Does anyone else get this?
3.
I'd get out there and try a german made model to learn the difference, if you can play the two side by side it'd be even better. If you think the new price difference is not worth it (I don't think it is anymore), then check out S/H german ones, as the prices are comparable to new RB models.
I'd like to try a German one at some point but since trying out the rockbass I've arranged to buy something else, so it'll have to wait a while
4.
I think the profile/construction may be different though I'm not sure. The materials are certainly different, the rockbass uses a maple neck with ekanga veneer and a rosewood fingerboard, whereas the german $$ uses an ovangkol neck and a wenge fingerboard. You can get warwick wax to maintain the smoothness and playability of the neck and fretboard, I'd be surprised if a decent shop didn't routinely apply that stuff to their warwicks, rockbasses or not. As for the body shape, if it's aesthetics you're after, there are definitely prettier basses out there. Warwick do say the corvette shape is technically a 3/4 size body, and it is small next to many other basses. IME this helps reduce weight, and if you got the chance to play the thing standing up, I'd imagine you will have noticed how spot on the balance is.
Thanks for the info. Its not so much that I'm "after aesthetics", its just that there are so many nice-playing AND nice-looking basses out there that I don't see the point in settling for one that only meets one of those two criteria To be honest though, the only thing I don't like about the Corvette is that silly upper horn. Its too long and, to be blunt, looks like it belongs in an Ann Summers catalogue Shorten it and round it off (maybe make it more like an Ibanez) and the design would be amazing...
5. I would always recommend Yamaha to a beginner bassist. Or guitarist. Or flute player. Or....
6.
I have had my an Electro Harmonix Q-Tron + pedal for a number of years and for the first few months it worked fine. Then one day i plugged it in and it just stopped working. This has been the case for about 2/ 3 years and until now i have never got round to doing anything about it. The light on the pedal still works and it still works on Bypass (my bass still plays through it on Bypass) but when stomped on no sound at all is produced. I was just wondering if anyone knew if this was common with these pedals or if anyone has come across this before and if so, is there an easy fix? Cheers
I don't know anything specific about this pedal, but working in bypass but not when engaged is a classic sign of a loose connection somewhere. I'd open it up and see if theres anything dodgy about the soldering on the jacks.
7. I tried a RockBass corvette $$ at the weekend, which was my first Warwick experience... Being honest, I don't really rate the body shape all that much but the finish (a lovely light natural wood) was beautiful. And the neck! Wow. The finish on the back of the neck was really smooth---was ace. Even my non-bass playing wife said "ooh, that feels nice" Does anyone know, do the current German Warwicks have the same necks as the Rockbass ones?
8.
At a gig this weekend...Lately when I see pictures of myself I start thinking "who is this old man ?". Time is moving on :-)
Beautiful bass. What is it?
9. My guitars are insured through Allianz musical. If insuring through your contents insurance read the small print VERY carefully.
10. I use a DT-10 and find it works ok (bit slow sometimes, but its accurate). I tried out a Snark clip-on tuner the other day and it worked a treat on a 4-string. Has anyone tried one on a 5?
11.
What are the prices like? And does he do black hardware?
Just shy of £2k. Beautiful guitars, but way out of my price range
12. Sounds brilliant. A few years ago I had the pleasure of seeing Pee Wee playing alongside Fred Wesley (probably most famous for playing the trombone solo on the Isaac Hayes "Shaft" theme). Phenomenally good gig
13.
Bloody hell. You two must be fantastic at Tetris. Do they disappear when you get them in? We should post pictures of what we've squeezed into small cars!
A long time ago I got into the back of a black cab with two double basses. Neither had a case. That was NOT fun, but thankfully the basses didn't belong to me
14. I quite fancy one of these (once I save up the funds). How many of you are using them with the hydrive cabs? How well would it work with a generic cab?
15. I'm by no means an expert but the nicest bass I've ever had the pleasure of trying was a Sadowsky Jazz. Absolutely brilliant. Lightweight, comfortable to play, sounded amazing. If I had the cash I'd have one in a heartbeat. Of course, there are a *lot* of nice Jazzes out there! Have fun
16. I only have one bass: a Jazz copy. I'm currently in the process of acquiring a 5 string. If it turns out to be a keeper then I might think about selling my current bass (McNach, take note ). I think I'd rather just have one quality instrument and spend a lot of time with it than trying to divide all my playing between 3 or 4 different basses!
17. Lucatus I have managed to get some funds together and im very interested in this. I sent you a PM
18.
A regular question this. Garden centre 'slug tape' does need soldering between the joins. If you buy proper and inexpensive sheilding tape with conductive adhesive you save yourself a load of hassle. Anything advertised as EMI sheilding tape is great. Or f*&k it, tin foil does the job and any spare can be used for wrapping up old sausages. You don't need to sheild pickup cavities. Make sure the tape creeps over the top of the cav slightly in order to complete the circuit across the access cover.
When I shielded my telecaster I used el cheapo slug tape and didn't need to solder the joins. Worked a treat.
19. Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. Gutted my gas savings fund hasn't reached £400 yet!
20.
Oooh that's a sore one. Do you know what the outcome was. Did he manage to get Police involved. ? Dave
The seller (Analog Mike) sent him another one. The police did naff all. 21. I thought this was going to be a "what bass does the guy in pitchshifter use?" thread... ...I guess it is, but with a fairly major twist! Nice score by the way.
22. Thanks guys I'm planning a bass tryout session at somepoint but from what I can gather there aren't any warwick dealers in Scotland which makes things a bit awkward. The Sandbergs look interesting, didn't think it was possible to get one within my budget though! Keep the ideas coming folks...
23. Hey folks I'm interested in a new 4-string bass, looking for a "keeper" to grow old with! Budget absolutely no more than £600 (preferably less) and willing to go second hand. I want something versatile for doing rock/jazz/reggae/soul/funk. Pretty much most things except heavy metal really! Aesthetically I really like natural finishes on light coloured wood and I quite like things to be a *little* bit different. I don't like musicman style basses. I currently play a Jazz copy and really like the neck on it (I have small hands and stubby fingers). Currently I am aiming towards: G&L L2000 (probably a tribute, barring a miraculous bargain on a USA one) Ibanez SR series (probably a 600 or higher) Warwick Corvette (second hand German one--- TBH the main reason I'm intrigued by these is they seem ridiculously good value at the moment.!!!) Thoughts? At the moment the G&L is probably in the lead.
24. I don't own a "giggable" bass amp---just a 20W Warwick practice amp. This probably makes me a bad person in the eyes of many---but we've never done a gig where there wasn't an amp provided or a DI to the PA available. I'm not particularly precious about my bass sound and for noisy punky rock n roll as long as its loud enough and I can hear it then I'm usually happy to let the sound guy do whatever he wants with the FOH sound. I've thought long and hard about buying a bass amp but I could go out and spend a grand on an amp tomorrow and probably only get an opportunity to use it once a year---seems pointless to me, I'd rather just borrow one as necessary!
