1. Stand over them to start with, introduce them to the controls (they may have no idea ) and just mention that if they unplug the wrong way and they make your gear go bang you'll F==K**G KILL them. Might work. Mute footpedal? Probably just as easy to educate them - we all have to learn sometime. Come on, this is really basic stuff! ALternatively don't let anyone you don't trust use your gear. There was a whole thread on this some time back. My first ceilidh band had a guitar/harmonica player who did this all the time, despite pleas from all of us. He nearly got walled up by a PA owner/engineer one time going through a few KW and lots of speakers. He remembered THAT gig
2.
The cab is 8ohm, but bear in mind that we are talking about a home made head here, so I don't know how the power output was measured. I see 4 power valves, I know it's a clone of the fender bassman 100, ergo I suspect the intended output power was 100W. I've played it through an ampeg 8x10 wardrobe in a practice room, with a quieter band, and still had to go very close to full tilt to get the volume. Those cabs are 4ohm and loads of cone area...
SOunds like it's just underpowered for your needs. I'd be more inclined to put potential setup money (and sale money) into something that will really do the job. I couldn't help but spot this in the Marketplace: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=125209 recently. Plenty of power there; I have the AH250SMX myself, and have never needed more power than that, using various cabs from 1x10 to 2x10. These days I tend to carry a 1x10 and a 1x12 and still get asked to turn down! Try a few different heads - Bass Bashes are often good for that, also there's a big show coming up in London - I'm sure others on here will have their favourites, but I once saw a top video explaing how Trace grow their Watts on local farms in Essex which is why their amplifiers are so loud!
3. Any idea of the impedance of your cab? Most amps specify the output power RMS into 4 Ohms. 100W into 4 Ohms amp only gives about 2/3 of that, ie 60-odd Watts, into 8 Ohms. Not much power for a rock band bass. Also, if that 100W is the Peak measurement, the RMS - this is the figure that most of us go by - will also be considerably less, prob about 60W. If both those apply you might be putting as little as 40W into your cab, which will be a struggle in a rock band! I used to struggle with a 100W into 2 x 15" cabs!
4. I told my wife, herself a bluegrass bass player of many years, about your mishap. She sends full sympathy, having been there and seen others in the same boat! Two pieces of advice from her, the first already well covered in this thread! Also 'don't lean your bass against a table while your mother is using the sewing machine'!
5. Gosh! When I saw the title, I thought Beed had moved to Bradford!
6. Like it says in the description, 100 Watt acoustic guitar combo. Not a bass amp but fine pieces of kit!
7.
I really don't get this 'must have an acoustic bass' thing. It's not MTV unplugged in 1993 anymore....
Yup.. when you actually use and associate with acoustic instruments as normal, the whole 'Unplugged' thing (i.e. rock bands playing electro-acoustics PLUGGED IN ) comes across as rather ridiculous!
8. All the trades done here are between two individuals; there is no Organisation covering you if anything goes wrong. Imagine you've seen the advert in the Yorkshire post, and proceed with the same caution. The majority of people in the world are not out to stiff anyone, but a small percentage are; the internet is, I suppose, populated by about the same proportion of T#ssers. At least on BC there's something of a community vibe going on - word gets around quickly if dodgy dealings happen and I believe the mods can track multi-personality types to an extent, but like all here are saying you can get more of an idea of someone once they've been around a while. The Feedback section obviously helps, but not all of us even bother with it. Basically a bad rep would spread like fire! This isn't to say that the newbie in Greece is definitely a wrong 'un - hey, we all started somewhere - but it seems that if they are ok they haven't made any effort so far to make themselves trusted, at least going on the very little I've heard. I'm with Beedster on this one.
9. If they really insist on the acoustic thing, Crafter do a half-decent 5er, but depending on volume (Celtic Rock covers alot of bases..) you may struggle with feedback. If it's the LOUDER end of such things, those Godin ones are rather tasty both fretted and fretless. Or maybe it's time for an EUB? For the first run through, I'd just take something you're comfortable with so they can see and hear you - they might drop further stipulations.
10. How d'you mean, 'maxed out'?
11. I didn't actually have such problems before, and that state of affairs continues. Checked on all (OK, both) my 'devices' and all's well. Many thanks anyway!
12. You could try the Bottesini Method for double bass.. all the studies actually have strong melodies so pleasant to play, but the more you get into the book the more you recognise what particular aspect of technique that study is concentrating on.
13.
Nice to see a status bass with a headstock for once!
Haha.. I was just thinking it looked all wrong!
14. You have to remember that we all go around with 'our sound' in our heads, and won't rest until we get it! Hence all the time and money we put into achieving that. Generally I get to use 'my sound', whatever that my be (I'm a fretless social misfit, so it's harder for a 'standard' tone to be overlaid anyway) with an odd tweak here and there for the mix. If it's 'my' project, i.e. a regular band, I'll often put more opinion forward as to exactly how the bass should be. If I'm the hired hand (far more common these days) then really it's down to the person I'm playing for - as long as they like the lines I play they'll probably book me again! If they want to change the tone to suit 'Their sound' well, it's their sound and I might even get a different tone to aim for for a particular vibe. As for your recording, OP, then yes - if you're unhappy then say it now or else hold your disappointment in for ever! Like many here, I've said nowt at the time and am bugged every time I hear a few things from past bands. If you're paying for the studio and mixing, you can have as many goes at the mix as you want, although you have to pay for each go. The reason many bands get their own recording setup is to gain full freedom of 'let's just hear that again with a bit more mid in the vocals'. Can be a double-edged sword, mind, and I've known a couple of bands who never get a recording finished for all the tweaking!
15. Hi folks, I bought this open-hole flute a couple of years ago as an experiment, to see how I'd cope with the open hole thing. Brilliant, it is! The only thing 'wrong' with it is that I'm used to the Yamaha that I've played for the last almost 20 years, and the James is just that subtle bit different to play, so I've now got myself an open hole Yamaha for a sort of matched pair. Hence this flute is surplus to requirements.. can't believe I actually have THREE flutes!! This model is basically the TJ10x with ring keys; all silver plated, inline G, no split E. The little plastic plugs are all present so you can also play it as a closed hole flute. Condition-wise, it's used but rather good. The folks I got it from said it was their daughter's when she was at school, since when (she's long since grown up and moved out) it's been in the attic doing nothing. Seems about right.. I did a few tweaks to the action and away it went. All the notes play well with no signs of leakage or bent or sticking keys. Apologies for the photo.. I've not yet installed my decent camera on this computer so it's a crappy phone camera job, but it gives you the idea. I'll organise decent pics if anyone wants specific detail. Price includes sending by overnight tracked carrier (from work).
16. It'll come out mono, but it WILL rock! :-) I once wired some sockets into a previous car so that, while travelling to or from a gig, I could play the 2 x 5W car stereo through a pair of 4x10s with tweeters. Monster!
17. Hi Stevie, I saw this while browsing a few mins ago; looks nice! Good luck with this one. I am puzzled though.. what is a 'piezo jazz pickup'? I know piezo and I know Jazz pickups, but a combination sounds intriguing!

Charlie Speed Band

One of the perils of being everybody's stand-in is that if all the regular guys show up for their gigs I'm stuffed! Glad to report the opposite, however, and now I have a couple of gigs in so far with Charlie Speed Band as the regular incumbent Jon Short is busy on another project. Cheers Jon, good man yerself! Tomorrow (Sat) at Korks in Otley - that's just north of Leeds/Bradford for the uninitiated. A venue I really like, not least owing to their fine selection of beers and wines. An excuse to play again with one of my favourite drummers, Roy Whyke. An honour to play with Charlie, of whom I've been aware for ages but whose songs I've just started hearing with a different set of ears! It's grand to do gigs where I actually really enjoy the songs! Charlie's been off the scene for a couple of years due to health problems, but glad to report he's now fired up to get gigging again.. well worth checking out whoever is on bass! See you over a Black Sheep in Otley!
19. I don't know if this would be of interest, but I have a J-Retro Deluxe which came on a second-hand Overwater Jazz; it's a brilliant piece of kit, but being a bear of little brain I just can't cope with so much onboard control, so I swapped it out and made up something simpler for that bass. If you have someone interested in the Audere and I have a 'spare' East we could probably all end up happy! A little more complicated, but there you go.
20.
Don't joke! I came across this at the weekend: AC/DC for Ukulele
We have that in the shop.. it inspired me to have a crack at Rosie on a uke while demoing such a thing. Well, I laughed anyway
21.
Get a fretless and it all goes away
+1
Don't worry about it. Forget what the display shows, it'll just make you neurotic. The difference you see is totally insignificant.
+1 I generally tune up without thrashing the strings, so I suppose more like the 'end of the note', but since I play fretless all the time I keep my ears open.. any out-of-tuneness is down to me rather than the tuner! The other thing which may help is to use a heavier gauge of strings which will reduce the amount by which they pull themselves out of tune. Relax!
22. Niceone (or two) BassBus.. I used to hold Status 5 string fretless headless as my dream bass! Here's my Ibanez Roadster.. and a link to the most recent part (2009) of the customisation process: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...ibanez+roadster
23.
Does it come with any cats?
Excellent post LW!
