1. Some great comments here already............... I plead guilty to being very lax in changing strings, and I have been tempted to try Elixirs but they are expensive. I need to do some serious string research methinks. With regards to amps, I think I need to get something a little smaller than the Trace rig, so I'll will be selling that, and unfortunately will also be shifting one of the basses to help fund the amp. But the first thing I'll be doing is whacking some new strings on at least one of my basses, and I'll do that this weekend ( if either of the Sound Controls in Glasgow are still open ) Interestingly no-one has encouraged me to go for one of the Sei's that are for sale..................in my ignorance I'd have thought they would have been right up my sonic street. thanks again guys'n'gals, and please keep 'em coming. S
2. Thanks BOD2...............hope I didn't come over all negative on the Pod front, its just way to complicated for me. I'd love to be able to master it, I know Ped just LOVES his to bits. C'mon guys, help a poor soul out here........................
3.
Devils advocate..... Buy a rackmount Bass POD XT. Buy a good powerful personal stage monitor (or go for a simple in-ear system). Spend the rest on basses. Since you always go through the PA do you really need a big stage amp ? Of course it's a personal choice at the end of the day.
Hi BOD2, thanks for the quick reply. I have tried the Bass Pod XT Pro, and just couldn't get my simple head round it. It now resides at Ped Towers. A good personal stage monitor.......thats kinda what I thought a smallish combo. I do still like to feel a little air behind me, which is why I haven't considered in ears. We use them in the band for the two main vocalists and they don't seem overly impressed. As you say it IS purely personal choice, and I do thank you for being the first to get involved. Moochas Grassyass, Stewart
4. Ok guys........I need some feedback, so, get your thinking caps on here. I've always been a kinda old school sound sorta guy - think Motown and your there - but I have always admired more modern sounding players and their nice sounds so I've decided to have a radical rethink gear wise to enable me to do this. Firstly, the sound(s) I am after ( there are two main types of sound ) are 1. a piano like tone, sounds nice and bassy in the mix, but on it's own has a lot of top end to help it cut through. 2. a kinda "Chic" type sound. Very modern, I would describe this as middley but I could be wrong. Anyway, everyone knows that sound. Punchy and tight. My current sound, although nice and round, is very dated, and I'd really like to get more modern. Anyway onto my current gear - Basses, all 5'ers 1 StingRay - ash body / maple neck 2. G&L L2500 as above ( with TI Jazz Flats natch, probably the most comfortable bass I've ever played ) 3. EBMM Bongo HS Ltd Ed - Envy Green, v. nice indeed. 4. Ibanez elctro-acoustiic - for home use only, but sounds amazing through our PA. Amps 1. Trace Series 6 AH200 2. Matching 2x10 cab and 1x15 cab 3. Basson B210b Odds'n'Sods - which can be sold to help fund new gear Behringer rack tuner Crate Power Block Basically I want to downsize gearwise, also 2 good quality basses is plenty so one or more can go. I think I'd like to keep the StingRay, the others could go. The Trace rig can go too. I was looking at the new SWR RedHead, it's sounds great on the ads I've seen on YouTube etc, and although its heavy it's on wheels. It's 400 watts on it's own or 600 with a 4ohm ext cab ( e.g. the Basson B210b ??? ) for BIG gigs. It has all the functions I'd need - the built in rack space is nice, as is the all new VALVE D.I. ( I am always through the PA to a greater or lesser degree.) I've played through a Super RedHead in a large marquee and it sounded surprisingly big on stage, I loved the sound, but my only concern was I managed to get it to fart out on my low B when digging in a bit, however the new RedHeads have vastly upgraded drivers so that should help. I'd also consider the Eden Metro which I've never played through, but has a solid reputation. Might be a bit out of my budget new, and I do THINK I'd like a new amp. Basswise I'd like something more modern too, was thinking about the Pedulla Rapture - a nice big open ringy sound. I'd like something with a bit of a reputation behind it, as although I don't want to be changing too often I want to maintain resale value. There have been some nice Sei Jazzes up for sale on BC recently, and I don't think they've sold, so if I can get my stuff sold at a good price then those might be an option. So ideally I'd like to keep the StingRay, have an SWR RedHead and a.n.other bass. Nice and simple. I've discovered the joys of the Digitech Bass Synth Wah and am enjoying implementing that into the set. Live, I have been using a Big Dots tuner, very fast and easy to see in the dark. But that's it pedal wise. I reckon I can get a new RedHead for around £1100, which I reckon I should EASILY cover from the sale of the Trace rig ( £600 ?? ish ) and a bass (£750-800ish ) leaving a couple of hundred quid and another bass to fund the newbie bass. Oh and there's the odds and sods too, maybe £120 amongst them ?? ) So there we have it, any ideas ?? You lot know far more about gear than I do. Although I'd like the amp to be new, I'm not worried about the bass being new, as long as it's not abused. I can manage that myself. So get some replies flowing please, I look forward to some weird, wonderful and inspiring ideas. Stewart
5. G&L basses don't normally have a pan knob, one of the switches will do that function. I'd ask of a specific G&L forum, perhaps you've bagged some rarity..........I own an L2500 and did a lot of research and looked at a lot of G&L's before buying mine, and none had that extra knob, also the actual knobs themselves look plastic ???? ( could be the foto ), normally they'd be metal a la StingRay. As I'm sure you know the ASAT has a Tele shaped body. I'd give a kidney for a 5 string F-holed hollowbody ASAT, as rare as unicorn sh*t. But v.v.v. cool. S
6. MMMM....it does indeedy have an extra knob ( now wouldn't that be useful ), MFD pickups look right tho and G&L are really cagey about selling parts including pups ( although they have started to sell pups fairly recently ) A strange one indeed.....G&L neck and pups fer sure, can't say much about the rest, the extra knob is weird....what does it do ? S
7. LED par cans do work stand alone, they can either be programmed to do a slow or fast wash or will work sound to light. We use them - don't buy trad Par cans now, they are too high maintenance and just too warm !! S
8. Those cabs look like really old Trace cabs to me........I notice theres no red stripes, but look at the way the speakers are held in place and also the metal diamond speaker grille ( same as my old stuff ) . Mmmmmmmmmmmmm Might well be parting with a Series 6 head and cabs soon....watch out for it. S
9. The Artec big dot tuner is brill.........I've had one for a year now and they work really well, especially on a very dark stage - I found I couldn't read the note names on other tuners !!!
10. I've got Tomastik TI Jazz Flats on my 5 string G&L ( L-2500 ) and I think they are the most comfortable string I have used in 30 years of playing. I don't slap much, but I don't think they'd be too clever, it's just a much more mellow sound and feel, you just want to groove on them, nice and slow, make the notes count. Well I do anyway !! Have also tried Overwater's own flats and didn't get on with them at all, I found them to be imbalanced acroos the string range, and one of the strings ( D string ) just seems really dead in comparison to the others. At £25 a set they're not budget strings either. In fact I have a spare unused set I might want to swap for a good set opf flats........mmmmmmm Haven't tried the LaBellas yet, but will do sometime, after all, if Igor used them, well........................... S
11. Bump for a great bass.................I've got one ( with obligatory chip on the headstock ). You should have tried to put it in a normal case first...........the musicman case they supply is just a generic stingray case. But knowing Thomann I'm sure the case you got is a cracker. Good luck with the sale, if I wasn't all bassed out I might have a sniff. If I can offer the mearest suggestion of help, I think your price, as the Legend that is Tim Wannacott would say, is at the top of the estimate, but jolly good luck. S
12. .............and I took delivery this fine Sat morning. Just want to say a public thanks to Gregg for going above and beyond, this bass was as well packaged as a well packaged thing, served in in a well packaged sauce !!! Took me about 20 mins to get into it :-) Cheers G, loving it so far................. Stewart

My band

Have just finished a promo demo for my wedding corporate band and we have fired some low quality versions up on youtube. You can find one here [topic="0"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02LZdz9qTsE[/topic] There are 7 vids in all, we haven't got round to putting titles and stuff on yet, the originals ARE broadcast quality so are HUGE. This was recorded totally live straight from the desk ( NO overdubs at all, some minor level tweeking on cubase ) at the Jamhouse in Edinburgh 3 weeks ago. No fancy tricks or camera work, they are meant to let wedding /corporate punters know what we look and sound like. The DVD we finally produce will have a medley with fancy fades and also the full version songs on, so should be cool. Happy viewing ! Stewart
14. +3 for me 274
15. i wonder how many basses we own collectively!!! must be quite a few Hey mods, that would be cool to know. You guys must have some black magic that we can use to work this out. S
16. I use the house rig at the Jamhouse in Edinburgh quite a lot, it's a Hartke rig ( 200 watt head and a I THINK Trasporter ??? cabs - a 1x15 and a 2x10 ) Now I own an old, old Trace rig which I bought from a very nice chap on here, its an old AH200 a 2x10 ( 2103 ) and 1x15, sorry the model numbers have worn off the back, it is 17 years old. This rig also cost me less than the Hartke head would, and I subsequently sold my MesaBoogie 400+ and Ashdown ABM810 which the Trace rig was supposed to be a backup for !! Anyhow, I MUCH prefer the Trace sound as I find it much punchier and more articulate and a lot more bottom end ( I play 5'ers ). Both these rigs are very similerr spec wise I think, but to me ( and to be fair, my band mates also ) the Trace just sounds awesome in comparison. Break into the piggy bank and get an old Trace 1x15 and and old Mark 6 head like mine - you'll love it. There are some Trace bargains out there at the mo'. S
17. Friday was in the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam ( capacity 7K ), and Saturday the Sportspailais in Anywerp ( capacity 18K ), both gigs sold out. Result. S
18. I'd have it off you in a mo', but I've very, very little cash and only a fine cab to offer in trade !! S
The X3 is only £171 on Thomann.
I couldn't see it for less than £270. here S
20. Having dropped hints heavier than an Anthrax concert, I'm getting a Tascam MP-BT1. And a power supply. And some time to use them would be very nice. Hopefully a Toblerone as it's my fave ( I think my 3 v. young daughters are taking care of that one ) Result ! S
21.
God my ears hear different. I think the strings on the second deffo sounds like flats. The first is much punchier and to me sounds like rounds and a much more modern sound. It is difficult when it's two different songs tho. S
Oh should have added they do sound VERY different, and I should add I'm listening on PC speakers. S

23. I wonder if Drummers have this arguement over the size of their kits..................I think not. S
