1.
Yep you can get near, and the nearest I`ve been was with the Tech 21 VT DI, quite near with my Aguilar Tonehammer, but it`s still not the same. The sound is there, but the feel, and that "sag" you get with a valve amp just isn`t there. But for me, with a bad back, I`ll take near any day.
We all have our own words for it, you've used "sag", others use "heft", I use "grunt", but the essence of all the words is the same, it's something that all tube amps give that others don't. And key to it is feel and not sound, and probably more for the player than the audience, but it still makes a difference and to me simply makes playing so much more pleasurable. Re hybrids, having owned a SVT300 power amp a while back, I much prefer an SS preamp through a tube power amp than vice versa, although obviously this negates the weight and cost advantage that I'd guess is the essence of the tube preamp/SS power amp combination. End of the day though, tube pre + tube power = tone
 2.
My situation now is GK + VT pedal or all out move to Ampeg? And if so, which amp?
Any amp as long as it is all tube, don't believe what some people say about SS gear getting 'close enough'. Close enough if you're half deaf and don;t care about your sound yes, but not close enough for me. I have a B-15 and a V4-B. Neither are rated above 100w, both can humble most guitarists and most drummers, and both sound superb. The VT Bass might sound a bit like some of the Ampegs, but it doesn't feel like any of them.
there can be only one.....
Exactly. I think
 3.
I've played the KK Bass through the Matamp and 8x10 a few times, it works but my favourite EUB sound is still through a B-15, especially now the Matamp has sold and it's the only amp I own.
Everything sound s god though a B-15 mate, even my playing!
 4.
So tempting
Sounds rather good through large tube amps mate On a related issue, had the huge pleasure of seeing Old Crow Medicine Show at The Roundhouse, and as far as I could tell, he was playing his DB through an SVT and a fridge. MASSIVE sound, but about as far from DB as you can get! Hope all's well Steve C
 5. It's relatively small and compact and can easily be kept, for example, behind a sofa (where mine used to live). Really good instrument C
 6. The big daddy of EUBs! It guts me to sell what is not only a wonderful instrument but a wonderful piece of engineering and to my eye a work of art, albeit rather skeletal art! Anyway, the reason for sale is straight forward, I don't play it anymore. As some of you know, I live in Canterbury and work in Aberystwyth (I know). I bought this to keep at the office to enable me to do at least 20 mins of scales per day when I'm up in Wales. The reality is that when I'm there I'm in work mode and have rarely managed to find the necessary time, patience or location to practice properly. I recently decided that as it wasn't being used there I'd bring it back to Canterbury, only to find it's not being used here, simply because I've an Olde English Blonde sitting around here for those moments when I need to dabble. Those of you who've played one will know just what a magnificent beast it is. It doesn't pretend to replicate the tone of an acoustic instrument (although with the Full Circle on board it gets close enough for me), it was designed to allow pro orchestral and jazzers to practice silently via the headphone output. It was therefore built to feel and respond like a DB to both pizz and arco. Having said that, I've gigged it successfully on a few occasions and have had compliments on the tone (as much the result of it being a doddle to amplify and EQ as to any inherent total qualities of the instrument). It's in good but not perfect condition. It all works. It has the optional knee support (I think it's for the knee, I don't use it). The action is LOW LOW LOW, you can get it up as much as you want, but I've played fretless basses with higher action than this instrument. If you're an electric bass player looking to get into DB, this would be a very good starting point, not least because the low action will remove what is one of the main barriers to starting on DB, the tension between wanting to crack on with it on the one hand and muscle fatigue and potential injury on the other. Perhaps goes without saying that this can't be posted. I will however do all I can to accommodate/facilitate collection or meetup. These sell for over £3k. One grande for such a high quality instrument? Well, to quote LS&TSB, "It's a deal, it's a steal, the sale of the f*****g century" And yes, I may well keep it No trades thanks, got everything I need
 7.
For all they know, you could be fatter than the bass player they fired.
Brilliant
 8.
Well I'm in Nottingham so I for one would like a heads up so I can avoid him/her
Doubt he'll be selling any basses for a while Bump for the Telebass
 9. Thanks Dan, really not a problem, I've checked it all out and it's all as described above, that is all parts are authentic and original (the tuners and neckplate excepted), it's just they didn't all originate on the same instrument, which - Fender's late 70's QC being what it was - probably means it's a better instrument all round than had it left the factory as one! I'm not going to chase the seller despite the fact he's clearly dishonest so have left feedback to that effect and will get on with playing some bass rather than buying, selling, modifying etc! I want to keep this bass because it has a great core tone, but I don't need this bass, so I'm happy if it goes but won't be unhappy if it stays. £600 seems a very fair price all things considered so I hope someone who both wants and needs it comes along and makes my mind up for me! Cheers Chris
 10.
I wonder how much, (and is it worth doing) changing the colour to seafoam or yellow?
Ha ha, defo not my colour scheme mate! Folks, I've had a few PMs on this, thanks for that. I perhaps indicated above that I'm after the eBay seller, I'm not, I really don't care to be honest, it's a lovely instrument and once I've verified that all parts are in fact original 70's USA Fender, I doubt it changes much (let's face it, most late 70's Fenders were bitsas when they left the factory). I've emailed the seller suggesting that he was, shall we say, economic with the truth, but I doubt much will happen. All of the above taken in to account, I'm probably happy to sell it and equally happy to keep it, although if the latter the finish is coming off and that PUPs going where it should be! Chris
 11. I find most vintage Fender gear, especially cabs, not very bassy. As above, the Bassman is/are very good, but better through Ampeg cabs C
 12.
Thank God for that! Temptation and lust defeated
Well, I wouldn't speak too soon Karl..... It's on hold because I've just had a chat with a very well respected and long standing member who not only used to own this bass, but in fact actually put this bass together form parts. So, it's a bitsa, the degree of bitsa-ness yet to be confirmed as it's a while since the BCer did the work. This has a couple of implications. Firstly whilst it might be all 70's USA parts - and I'm emphasising the might - it's likely not a restoration project, which makes me more inclined to keep it, strip it, fill the holes, oil it and play it. On that basis nothing has changed perhaps, it's still a cracking bass. Second, I'm going to pursue the guy I bought it from, who told a story about the bass which clearly isn't true, and it appears that the original owner/builder pointed this out to him via the eBay listing and was ignored when he did. Even were the bass all original, the seller's description as to its originality and condition was so far off that it was laughable (for example, he suggested he was regularly playing it, but when I received it part of the neck tilt assembly was missing, and looked like it has been for some time, meaning that it didn't stay in tune for more than about 20 seconds due to the neck moving in play). I emailed the seller about this when I bought it and received no reply, so thought 'sod it', spent £150 and did some work and got it back to playable. Anyway, i'm waiting for a response form the eBay seller. If I don't get one I'll keep the bass and reveal the full details of the eBay seller so you good folks can avoid him, especially if you are active in the live/pub circuit in Nottingham (he plays g****r in a Nottingham pub rock band) So, in short, I'm happy to sell it, as I said above I'm spending too much time messing about with basses and not enough time playing them (I'm a sucker for the word 'project'). I will however wait to see if I get a response from the seller first regarding a return and refund, although I'm not optimistic as it's past the 45 days instant refund stage and he came across as less than honest when I was dealing with him. I'll have to content myself with the word 'fraudulent' in his feedback. I I sell, I think £600 is a fair price, but ahead of selling it I will get verification on the parts that I'm in doubt about, namely the body. Might even part it out.... Basses eh! Chris
 13. Many thanks Karl, greatly appreciated. This bass is now on hold Chris
 14. OK, I've decided to definitely sell this beauty. I spend too much time on project basses and not enough time playing them. This is perfectly playable as is, but I know that if I keep it I'm going to end up spending time and money on it, and both are in short supply at present. Happy to talk cash offers.
 15. Thanks folks, now sold I'm sad to say, although happy for the buyer who will no doubt build a cracking bass
 16.
Surely this can't still be here by evening? Bargain beauty.
Dan, on the money there mate, now sold Chris
 17.
Buy with confidence people. This man knows his Fender's and is a pleasure to deal with. Getting this Jazz off him is going to a bit of a wrench, so make it quick and make it as painless as possible. If I had the cash, I would be on my way over there (again) myself.
+1, in my book if Dan says it's a good'un, it's a good'un
 18.
Surely this can't still be here by evening? Bargain beauty.
Ha ha, thanks Dan, there's SO many great basses for sale on here at the moment that we're all spoilt for choice - I doubt there's ever been a better time to buy a bass to be honest. Just seen from your sig that you're letting one of your Jazzes go also. All the best with that mate Cheers C
 19. In response to a couple of enquiries apparently the PUPs are passive the only active component being the circuit Chris
 20. OK, I've had a couple of enquiries so just to confirm 100% what is being sold here and the terms of sale is the following: Used parts

I x large black EUB body very similar to a Yamaha SLB-100 in feel and weight (it is big). It has a painted board that has worn in places to the wood but which is in generally good playable condition. Any repair to the board would likely be aesthetic as opposed to functional. The body itself is painted in a thick black coating meaning it is not easy to see of how many pieces the instrument is constructed. However it feels strong, the only slight issue is the eight screws at back and foot of the body (photos above), which suggest that at some time the body may have been repaired where the endpin joins it.
1 x black bridge, semi adjustable but otherwise no further details
1 x black tailpiece no further details
1 x Kent Armstrong mag neck-mounted PUP. This is clearly used and was taped to a board at some time and could do with a clean up. I also suspect that it wouldn't do any harm at all to re-solder the leads to the unit, or at least reinforce the connection on some other way.
1 x Bassbalsereit DB pickup boxed. This requires a hole drilled into the bridge to function
New items bought from Thomann

4 x 001.00 RUBNER DOUBLE BASS MACHINES 4-STRING for 4/4 -3/4 doublebasses, single machines, French style, nickel-plated, complete set of 4 machines, order code: 257587, amount: 1 pc(s)
2 x 002.00 GEWA ENDPIN DOUBLE BASS STANDARD, metal rod, 8mm diameter, 33cm length, plywood endpin cone with diameter 28mm to 26mm.order code: 246528
1 x 003.00 GEWA TAILGUT FOR DOUBLE BASS 3/4, Nylon. Order code: 228633, amount: 1 pc(s)
New items bough from Caswells

1 x Double bass semi fitted ebony saddle x 1
1 x Double bass top nut semi shaped ebony (I have two more of these somewhere but my daughters have hidden them!)
I think I need to be quite clear that this deal has to be no returns so please look at the photos and the above before deciding to buy. It is a project not an instrument, and on that basis comes with an element of risk. The risk is mitigated to an extent by the fact that if sold separately the two pickups could probably raise £100 and the tuners £60, meaning that if you put it all together and the body folds into two when strung, all is not lost! All joking aside, it's a big strong piece of wood so I doubt there'll be any problems, but it will require work. I was going to strip it down to bare wood before building it, that way I would be confident about the condition of what's under the paint, but this of course is a long job in itself and is in part why I'm selling the project. Wish I could do it myself. Anyway, please feel free to ask further questions
 21.
If you could ship it or meet up somehow I'd have it Chris.
Ha ha, I'd love to see the face of the Parcelforce driver who has to collect this! This may be sold locally and there are a couple of other enquiries, but it would be good to have an excuse to finally meet up! C
 22. Another option is £250 with the original EMG active PUPs. This is a steal because I now have four fretless basses, need to clear the decks and need some cash.
 23. This is still available until I fire up the V4B and SVT15E again and change my mind
 24. PPS this is the only 'rough' part of the body, at the bottom on the back. Some decent screws will no doubt help this 9streaks are the result of my washing off some dust) Just gave the board a good wipe and the wood is actually really quite nice and will oil very well.
