    I agree that One Hot Minute was a decent album (I'd have been happy to play on it), but yes, BSSM and Californication are truly outstanding, and By The Way, although not as strong as its predecessor, was still a great album (I quite like Zephyr, at least the verses). As I think most people agree (although not on which songs should be in/out), Stadium Arcadium should have been a single album. Given the last two however, I suspect their next album is going to be their last and a sad goodby unless they pull something magical out of the bag. With JF back, they might just do it.

    Agreed. But I can make flats slapped sound way better, which was kinda why I posted. I expect way better from Flea/RCHP. My sense was that he (and possibly the rest of the band) invested very little in developing the parts and in the playing, which made me feel quite sad to be honest. I hope JFv3 gives them the necessary motivation to be what they're no doubt still capable of being?

    Ex new guitarist So, back to the point of the thread with an example. I really like the feel of Goodbye Angels on The Getaway, which has something of Californication about it to my ear. But the bass riff at around 3.30 seems very crude in terms of Flea's technique and his tone, but more importantly perhaps, seems completely unnecessary in the context of the song. This felt like a departure to me for a bassist who had mostly played what was necessary for the song throughout 30 previous years. And don't get me wrong, I love the guy, I love his lines, his tone and his attitude.

    I know John, I should never have sold it, then bought it back, and then sold it again Admittedly the second time was out of financial necessity when we were buying a new house, but still regret it!

    Thank you mate, I realised that this evening as I started to write the listing. I think I’ll just let it sit here a little longer, I’ve put a Warmoth FL Precision neck in it which I’d much more to my liking also

    I kinda prefer the idea that he’s playing one vintage bass than five or six boutique Wal/Alembic/Modulus/Spector basses (and having just checked he apparently used the 61 Jazz for the whole album). I’m not convinced it works on all the tracks however, whereas I think on Cal/BTW/SA you can hear where he uses different basses to their strengths. Either way, if I had 10% of his talent I’d be happy

    Absolutely, SK is a far visually than sonically, appealing configuration. The Jazz Bass tone that everyone talks about is VVT

    Learning a few new RHCP songs, and getting into some post JFv2/pre JFv3 songs on the post Stadium Arcadium albums that had previously passed my by. Have to say that thing that really stands out for me is that Flea’s slap tone appears very crude by comparison with earlier albums, especially in The Getaway, and that the lines themselves are nothing like as well conceived. Am I missing something, because I know a few folks here rate the album in question?

    Thanks Luke, sign of the times I guess mate. I keep going around in circles on it to be honest, one minute I think I should never have bought such as expensive bass given that I already had a fretless Jazz (and one better suited to me because it has a fat neck whilst the '68 has a very thin neck), the next minute I can't believe my luck to own such a dream instrument. The more I play it the more I want to keep it, so I'm keeping it firmly locked in its case at the moment. I'm going to list it on eBay this evening, so to avoid the stress of that I'd welcome cash offers in the meantime

    Lovely lovely Precision, selling as I have too many of them and this one has a 40mm nut which is just a little too small for me. Some more details in this thread Tone wise it's a cracker, back PUP was a real surprise. Built like a tank also. Proper 1970s MIJ workmanship. Having to spend the weekend installing a new bathroom so being brief. Will reply to any specific questions about the bass in the thread.
