1. Probably like a few others on here I started on bass in the early days of punk, in a school band. On violin (which I was fairly good at, but after seeing the Starnglers in '77 ditched for the next 10 years) I was just making a noise that meant very little to me. On bass, bashing away on an open string with my equally clueless band mates on those first few gigs, we were creating something that moved me inexpressibly - we were musicians
2. Never knew MM played with them; I'll have to re-listen Slightly off-topic, but the Herbie Hancock keyboard break on "Hunter and the hunted" (New Gold Dream) blows me away every time, it's so beautifully understated
3. Sound advice above, but mine would always be to put together your own bitsa. My last 4 or so main gigging basses have been self-build P's, and latest one (5th post from bottom of page: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/109268-white-bass-porn-thread/page__st__360 ) blows away any other boutique P bass at any price level I've tried, and probably cost me around £300 all in; body, neck, and tuners sourced used here on BC. You (1) get exactly the spec you want, (2) end up with something that means more to you because you made it, and (3) it's dead easy and fun.....in fact can become addictive! Good luck anyway, and hope you find (or make) a good 'un! Edit: I'd be very tempted by this: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/288461-seafoam-green-usa-parts-built-p-bass/

Fabulous basses, way ahead of their time - I have a '77 fretless Magnum 1 that I prefer to my fretless Wal Speculative PM sent
5.
OK, first up, '65 Precision. In fact, perhaps the nicest Precision I've owned. Bought from Simon Clifton around 2009, went to Greg (Shaggy) for a while...... PUPs and circuit are NOT original. PUP is a Fender USA '62 RI, I'm not sure about the circuit but will check.
Certainly hands-down the best split-pickup Precision I've ever owned or played, and I've had a few good 'uns. I put the current circuit (and pickup) in - it had a decent generic circuit when I first had it, but I sourced one from the States with genuine NOS 1965 CTS pots, and vintage-spec cloth-sheathed wire, switchcraft jack, and orange drop cap. Not cheap! REALLY fancying that Modulus, as I've never owned one but hear so many good things about them. Unfortunately, just bought yet another old Gibson bass! Got us all wondering what this new "project" is Chris!
6. Met up with Jules for a second trade (I think the first time was in the days of Bassworld!), trading my old Gibson bass for his old Gibson bass - very obligingly on his part, as the trade was my idea (been after one of his basses for a while......) Great guy, pleasure to talk to, hugely knowledgable about vintage basses and Gibsons in particular - he runs the Fly Guitars site - many thanks mate!
7. Absolutely stunning bass Col, can't believe you'd want to let this one go! Shame all my potential trades have only 4 strings, but have a bump
8. If I hadn't recently bought Chris's '57P this would be mine in a heartbeat, and no question that the CS '55 was the real looker of the two Bump for best bass FS at the moment
9. Ooh - takes me back seeing the old girl - this used to be mine, and Burritobass's before that. I'm certainly no expert with acoustic guitars but this one has a particularly sweet tone; I always liked the very funky bridge and pickguard design, and the pre-war style logo. I think the output jack connects to a concealed electromagnetic pickup and is original to the guitar, but I could be wrong - I never used it, but was told the amplified tone is lovely. A rare and vintage Gibson for not much dosh, with the added bonus of dealing with a Basschat legend.......
10. Another year, another deal with Chris, rather as usual involving swapping the same stuff back to each other! This one involved me acquiring a particularly special old bass; and again as usual nothing was too much trouble for Chris - he made a long train trip from Canterbury to Cambridge and back to make the deal happen. Thanks mate - until next year then!
11. Explorer now traded
12. Aaaaaaargh....... PM'd
13.
http://www.google.co...462271471337547
Nice one KiOgon, thanks - thought it had to be achievable! I'll get me soldering iron out........
14. Sorry if this is repeating a previous thread - I did a search on speaker impedance and only got more confused! Is it possible to wire up a 4-driver cab, each driver being 8 ohm, such that the net cab impedance is 8 ohm? Cheers! Greg
15. Just bought a couple of Ashdown cabs off Jim - smooth easy deal, great communications, and he even delivered them to my brother in Hampshire the morning after we agreed the deal Top fella - thanks mate!
16. Beautiful looking 'Ray, that quilt top is gorgeous...... Bump and PM
17. Bought a truss rod cover off Simon - easy deal, and always the sign of a top BC-er when they take the same trouble with the small deals as the big ones
18. Still using my Halfords imperial set bought in 1982, so I can vouch for their longevity........
19.
Hello Shaggy, Is that the same T bird you did a Fenderbird conversion on? If it is, do you still have the neck and would you be interested in selling that? Many thanks and GLWTS. Best Stuart
Replied via PM
20.
Has that Explorer bass still not shifted?
Hope you're well Jules, and Lol, no - not even Flyguitars loves Gibson Explorer basses! Think I'm now contending with cetera's Spector Rex Brown sale thread as the longest running, but actually not too sorry as I've rediscovered the Explorer again, as it suits some new band material - it's surprising the extra speed on runs achievable on a medium scale neck compared to my usual long scale
21.
Really Free by John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett. (yes, I know Otway had a second hit 25 years later, but I count that as MY hit, not his )
Saw them play in in Cambridge back in the day, great live act My choice - "Feels like heaven" by Fiction Factory; takes me right back to a particular time in my life
