  1. A recent spate of God awful live outdoor gigs/fests has put me off spending anymore cash on more basses for good......Seems it dont matter what ur playing, out in the mush pit its all a dull drone.......we bassists really are a bit silly.
  2. This.....Iam getting so bored with 'bassists' who cant play a simple slow groove in the first five frets....and, with passing open strings.....whats going on bass peeps? Oh and the wood thing?....meh.
  3. Pity cause I have to totaly disagree with what Ive read so far about him. Saw him at a small local festival on the South Coast a few yrs ago (yes, weird or what!) and his band were just groovier and tighter than an over torqued nut and bolt....great sound.
  4. Well alright not widdling exactly but Reed as a leader in the current crop of young talent is just off the scale good, and I mean that in a musical way not just a 'Im fast look at me kinda way'.
  5. We're all here cause of that crappy clip of him in church playing that wicked version of Joy to the World....He's live and every ones watching him and hes pulling off lightning licks that I've never heard before.....Guys not only got a handle on melody but hes almost like a modern jacked up version of Jamerson. I think he's pretty unique and I'm an A1 religious non believer. The guy above is sat in his bedroom kinda widdling really.
  6. This is the 'Duncan Designed' Jazz P/J bridge PU from my 2017 Vintage Mod P/J bass which Iam converting back to P bass. Never liked the blue either but the weight was lovely so I bought it knowing I'd repaint it eventually. (vintage bridge is fitted simply because I prefer them to the standard Squire bridge.) Bass has had a lot of use but PU is in great condition . There is a notch in the end of the cover which I did to allow the leads a bit more movement. These Duncan Designed PU's are very good indeed. Great burpy, punchy tone and with the adjustable pole pieces so grab urself a bargain @ £35 plus a couple quid for postage etc. Cheers all
  7. Wow...would love to know why you couldn't hear a P bass in a band situation.
  8. If it wasnt too heavy that was a steal, then factor in three weeks to clean it...
  9. Looks about right..shame about the PU's and cavity.
  10. I've spent a lifetime listening to and studying the Beatles. As a teen in the 70's I hated them and then as I got older started to appreciate their genius but even today there is something about their "thing" which just seems old and kind of hokey despite the tunes being brilliant.....in a way that doesn't fit, wonder if that's why there not played much. Id even go so far to say that Motown stuff has the same problem.
  11. Im grt at missing stuff, so I def made sure I watched the X Ray Specs thing last night....fascinating woman indeed..tho a difficult life to some degree. Its a must watch.
  12. For simple but effective Ampeg madness it has to be Algie Wards playing on the Damneds Love Song....bliss! But the Rezillos mentioned above is killer too as is Olivers Army but its not really punk
  13. Cant b sure but it kinda sounds like it.. and it was a time when producers were looking for a modern tone...hence Y Jamerson didnt get any work...He wouldnt change his old flats for rounds...I digress.
  14. Ok last one....and lovely bit of fast pick playing
  15. There are no best only different and then those tunes that someone says is great but u know u couldn't dance to it in a million years or even after a couple of pints. Im old school...I like shape, melody, dynamics and a kind of melancholic emotion these two'll do for starters there's loads more.

  17. Yes we can all have a laff about the popcorn...Im on my second bucket haha...but the truth is out....all that matters is weight, tone and feel...It can be made from chicken poop for all I care, and if it fits those three criteria..I'm in.
  18. Well Jaco epoxied his fretboard to make it harder which may have contributed to his cutting mid range honk. I think the days of worrying about the purity of tone woods in solid body instruments are slowly coming to an end.
  19. Split the wrap with a Stanley blade..no idea what they are but not a good idea.
  20. History? For all we know it could have been Jamersons...blimey
  21. Absolutely, trouble is takes decades and a ton of money to see the light.
  22. Tis an interesting subject. Have to say my new CV 70's P bass dispels the myth about body woods needing to breath etc. Its got bags of sustain and sounds great and all happening under a thick coat of poly... I think good tone is more to do with the finished item being a solid unit rather than whether or not it started off as a single piece of wood. If a laminate/plywood is constructed from a hard wood with glue that cures hard then whats the difference between that and my CV P with a multi piece body....and finished in a rock hard thick coating. Surely its about the end result being a very solid inert finished body....certainly seems that way with my CV.
