Mr. Scheff lives in the Scottish borders, y'know. Strange but true...
Now I didn't know that!

Well I've stopped dithering, I now own an EUB

Whilst looking through some TB threads I noticed that there was talk of the NS WAV requiring a buffer/preamp and spookily one of the comments that Jennifer made (not stalking you honest ) was that she couldn't tell if she needed one or not because the WAV sounded fine through an amp and I'm finding the same thing. I have a preamp on appro from Warwick which I thought I'd try the WAV into before the power section of my little guitar combo and tbh it just made it sound 'different', as I'd expect a bass to sound different if I plugged it into the preamp rather than the front end of the Tech amp! So if it sounds OK, not saying brilliant as I have no benchmark to compare, is it worth finding a dedicated acoustic/EUB bass buffer/preamp? Actually I've answered that one myself; if I can find one to borrow locally then I will but I'm not buying one blind! -
The closer you get the action to that of an acoustic double bass, the more it will sound like an acoustic double bass. A lower action will have a greater propensity to make the instrument sound like a fretless bass guitar. I have a WAV myself and the action as setup from the factory was nowhere near high enough; however, it was quite good to get started on the instrument. If you want to get a decent jazz pizzicato, the strings will need to be sufficiently high off the fingerboard for the meat on the side of the fingers to get a good purchase. There is a recent thread on talkbass discussing jazz pizz technique; http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=644444 An ideal action depends on several factors, not least the type of music you play and whether you are playing ampified or not, which is not relevant in this case, but according to Chuck Traeger a good setup would have the G string at 6mm off the end of the fingerboard going to 8mm on the E string, with the others inbetween those. I think my WAV may have had a slight curve upwards towards the end of the fingerboard, which is not common on acoustic double basses, so if yours has this you may have to raise the strings a little higher than those figures. At one time I recall having the action on my WAV as high as it would go, and it wasn't as high as the double bass I owned at that time! PS, if you want the instrument to sound like a double bass, always use the "arco" setting, even when playing pizz. Jennifer
Cheers Jen (if I may be so familiar ) Oddly enough there is a turn up at the end of the board, which is 'extra' to what I would expect for the normal relief in the neck; i.e. when I finger the string around the 2nd octave the strings bottom out against the fingerboard. When you discuss 6 - 8mm is that with the bass at rest so to speak and what might one expect the distance from string to 12th fret to fingerboard be if you fretted the string at the 24th fret (Oooops hope using the term 'frets' isn't a major faux pa when discussing uprights )? Not that it matters I suppose, I should just get on with it! Cheers John -
I've faffed on for the last couple of years over whether to get an EUB, visiting this section of BC to glean snippets but as an NS WAV came up locally, I took the plunge! Until I can find a good book and/or good tutor I'm basically playing it like a vertical electric bass and whilst it suddenly feels like I've never played bass in my life I'm sure things will progress. I've got to take it to a local guy as it has a small split/crack in the end of the fingerboard (past the 2nd octave) but I'm not sure what sort of action to expect on an EUB... is there a consensus on what a 'normal' (subjective I know) action should be? Guess I'll be back in this strange section of BC a bit more in the future.

Buy a P bass and do this to it... If you buy wisely 2nd hand, you'll get a corker as mine was.
Just goes to show how far speaker technology has moved on since!
Oddly enough it hasn't! There's still good sound practice (no pun intended) as to why those vertical arrays worked... and would still work today.
You could get an absolute peach of a MIM Road worn or a pig in either model.
Hmmmm, I thought that 'might' be the case but I had hoped that there might be a consensus that one outweighed the other, especially as you are essentially looking at a very similar beast that costs (new) about the same!

Does anyone own or has anyone tried these two basses back-to-back? If so what was the consensus?
I would define "light" as 10kg or less. I'm not sure if that's the norm. My Hartke is 17 or 15.8kg once it's out the wooden casing. The Ampeg comes in at about 13kg if my conversion from lbs to kg is right. Surely amp manufacturers are missing a trick here by not catering to those players who like me want almost obsessive compulsive control over their sound whilst not breaking their spines for it? Maybe it's just me...
Oddly enough I went down the route of uber lightweight amps (inc owning a new MB LMK & SA450 at the same time) but tbh I never found one that cut it tonewise! Hence I own a moderate weight amp that is easy enough to transport in a case via car, however I'd not want to lug it around on public transport.

Alternatively... rob some of Marlowe's licks! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQsErVjvx8s...=watch_response

Is it possible for you to string a bunch of famous bass lines interspersed with various bass licks of your own? Sunshine of your love - Money - Taxman/Start - The Chain - Come together - Walk on the wildside... etc. That might be a lot more interesting for you and the listener rather than listen to the whole of a song and tbh the bassline to many rock songs is so nondescript that the listener would struggle to recognise it.

Only just got this and I am 'really' enjoying it but I reckon I'll be better off with the Sterling version (Ltd Ed 05) as I'm not the biggest of blokes... oh and my latest shoulder pains have taught me a final lesson! If you have the Sterling version and you want to do a swap then this is in 'MINT' condition and it has the original MM Ltd Ed case with cleaning cloth etc. I am not putting this up for sale so please don't ask but I might consider a trade for a standard Sterling but it would have to be in a livery that I like (i.e. pref sun/amberburst but not LPB/DK red) and a bit of cash from you. <edit> I'd also be interested in; A 'lightweight' P or J bass (doesn't have to be fender) - the closer to 8lb the better... not common I realise but not unheard of. This could be a one of the new Roadworns, HW1 (sad I know but I like the relic look), CV Squier or a genuine vintage(ish) bass. Again, my preferred colour scheme is 'burst/tort/rosewood. A Roscoe - never had one but I'm always interested in the esoteric. A Lakland DJ - I realise it's a HUGE ask to find a light one of these but you never know. No LPB basses. A Warwick - Streamer preferably but defo not a Thumb. Lastly - anything that is a bit different but I must stress 'lightweight' only but no cricket bat basses. 4 string basses only. I'd want money my way if your bass is of a generally lower value but I'd not be adverse to put money forward if yours is a greater value. Please be aware that I've been disappointed in the past by sellers claims that a bass is "lighter than any other bass I've owned" etc. I want accurate weights if you are interested in trading! Sorry to be a pain in the backside about my weight demands but I have a recurring shoulder injury and I've now got to accept that however much I love a bass; 9lb is a 'maximum' weight.

This is what you need from an EQ/preamp
And the second rule of BassClub is............. I had been considering a wireless just to see what happens out there. Being a small band we don't have a sound guy so I'm also responsible for the pa. I will try putting a bit in the monitors to see if it helps. Its often difficult to get further away from the amp in small venues!
You are the bass player ergo you are responsible for the PA... that's another rule of the Bass club!
Your House has different "take" on gravity!! HA HA!! nice bass though! BTW my 3 band is basically louder then the 2, if you get my meaning
Yes that's the door frame to the right and I use special horizontal hangers! Oh yes and the special gravity in my house makes money fly out of the house whenever I see a tasty bass!

I'm sure others do it but I know that Peavey used to do a decent size wedge shaped combo, that takes the idea of tiltback one step further and makes a lot of sense if you are using it purely for on-stage monitoring.
-
Even if it is so unloved, is it not worth just keeping it out and in regular use; as that is the best way to ensure that it stays in good condition? As for your bass... In all seriousness I'd not stick it away in a case and forget about it, best to just keep it around the house to noodle on. If it really offends you to have it around the house then ebay will be your best bet. BTW what is it?

It's been a LONG time since I've had a Ray but it had to be done. I'm really surprised at how much more than a one trick pony it can be, especially with flats on. My past experiences with Rays left me cold as I just couldn't seem to get away from that aggressive upfront tone, wonder if it's me, the strings or the bass that has changed (3 band rather than my old 2 band, though I've not been tweaking the EQ much on the bass)? I do have to confess I was holding out for a 2005 'Buttercream' Sterling or a really tasty sunburst Sterling but as this was local I went for it... now has anyone got a Sterling to trade?
-
Did you get anything done with the Sterling or have I missed a thread on it somewhere else?
