1.
It's actually very difficult to produce sounds from a Wal Custom that don't sound "right".
Sorry but I have to disagree for the very reasons that you think that they are great! I agree with all of the statements that a Wal can sound great BUT having owned one many years ago (and having one in the house now on loan), I have to say that they infuriate me with their ability to allow 'me' to screw the tone up! I found that when I owned mine that if I gave it just a bit of a tweak mid song/gig it had the potential to start to sound pants and I'd then spend the rest of the gig trying to get back what I wanted... not my idea of fun. Not saying that they aren't great basses, I have liked the neck of everyone that I have tried but I find them generally a bit too heavy and those tone circuits are just not for me.
2. I think we'll have to give it a rest for a while Col, otherwise people will begin to talk! Glad you like the Parker, I'm sure that it'll be a keeper.
3. I knew that whoever got it would love it. I'm sure it has the potential to be your main bass... glad I sold you the other two first!
4. Wrong section mate, I'm sure a Mod will move it for you.
5.
For the record, this is just a Streamer STD. It has nothing to do with 'stage 1' so I hope people don't get confused.
I'm sure if you were looking at the pic you'd be able to spot the difference.
6. Shame you couldn't have done a comparison, before/after, recording; look forward to hearing the Nordy's in the Sado though!
7. Two cabs, different manufacturers... were the cabs in phase (I'm thinking has anyone at any point tinkered with either cab and wired it opposite or were your speaker cables wired identical)?
8. Many manufacturers do this for various reasons, inc' giving you the option of adding another cab to increase the dispersion through the addition of speakers. My old H&K Bassbase combo however was designed to be specifically used with the internal speakers and as such had no other speaker output, personally I think that shows a commitment to their design; would a combo with 2x15's or 6x10's have as great a market as say a 1x15 or 2x10 combo that you can (have to) add speakers to? The answer by the way is NO, so the main reason for external speaker outs to get full power etc. is 'marketing'!
9. I bought and sold my Variaxe for about £300 and agree they were never worth the original price tag. If you like to have lots of different sounds in one bass and 'have' to have that Ric clank or Alembic sound or what-ever then the Variaxe is worth having. However, be aware you are playing a sub £200 so don't expect it to feel as great to play as a £1000 instrument though mine felt and played as good as any Squire or £200-£300 bass.
10. It's likely that a Jazz bass would be just as tight for slap as your Warwick! I tried a Standard a few years back and tbh it felt no tighter for string spacing than many other basses. If you just fancy a change, active electronics (internal/external ie pedal) might give you a bit more 'power' to slap with though there are MANY players who manage perfectly fine on passive basses. It could be that you just fancy a change which is as good a reason as any but if slap is the main consideration I'd try any bass out that you may want to trade as it could be just as tight for spacing.
11. "They all do that Sir"... You've basically highlighted the downsides of the Variaxe in your post! I had one and it was good fun but the 12 and Synth modes were 'just' fun and couldn't, unless you were lucky, be used in a live gigging context. I could get a better/controlled sound from using a couple of effects pedals rather than the Variaxe settings. Never noticed that mine was 'that' heavy and I'm a stickler for weight, so I think you maybe struck unlucky and the wood density of yours was a heavy one... or mine was the odd one out and was light!
12.
Damn! Just seen this now.... too late as usual!
Hmmm not trying to rub it in but... this really was/is a stonking bass and the buyer (not paid but good for the promise I'm sure) is getting a pro quality USA bass for the money that you'd pay for a cheapie!
13.
Use the right head and bass and attitude and a Compact will 'out-punch' an STL210. A Super Twelve will absolutely slaughter it and dance on its grave. Fact. (Edited for better metaphor).
Can't argue as I've never used my amp/bass/attitude with an STL210! However, is that a left-jab or a right-hook type 'punch'?
14.
Wise words, not sure on the 'punch' factor of the cabs, but as Im told, if you put that region of mids in, you get it out! PS - The Ashdown isn't mine, just an observation. For a practice room jam it was pretty decent. Not a patch on the Berg HS410 though.
The Ashdown reference isn't directed at anyone as much as @ the Ashdown 4x10 cab itself... well certainly the one that I tried in a local rehearsal room!
15.
The Parker is up as 'For Sale' but reluctant isnt the word. No way have I been able to prise her from you!!!
Oh bugg3r it, I forgot about her... it's defo available for 'sale' not trade.
16. Phew and there was me thinking of selling one of my Sterlings... think I'll hang fire for a year or two!
17.
I currently play through a Genz Benz shuttle 6.0-12T, plus a Genz Benz STL-210T cab, great rig and ideal for the function band that I used to play in, but now that I am playing in a rock/blues band, I feel I need something with a bit more punch.
I'll state from the off that I think that Alex's dedication to his work is to be applauded and I enjoy his insight into acoustics to the point where I'll read (and reread) most any thread that the likes of he or BFM post in. Having made that clear and seeing as you are asking for advice on whether 'others' think that a Barefaced cab will best suit your needs; then I personally don't think that it will. That is based upon the fact that you think that the GB cab that you have lacks 'punch' (a term which I'm sure AC, BFM and many others will say is nonsensical and meaningless) and that you play in a rock/blues band. I've played through several of Alex's cabs and it NEVER ceases to amaze me how light they are and I love them for that, however that is NOT one of your considerations, it is purely the sound of the cab and it's ability to sound full and punchy in a rock/blues setting and I have yet to get the sound that 'I' want out of one of the BF cabs as I always feet that they have plenty of bottom (and top) but lack any punch/heft/weight to the tone. Patently they are not going to suit every person and I am NOT putting Alex's cabs down, they just don't suit me... same as an Ashdown 4x10 sounds pants to my ears! One thing that I do find strange is that you've had a cab on order for 6 weeks and THEN you ask for people's opinions!
18. I've got one of these fretted ones and it is a cracking bass with a very distinct voice that can surprise quite a few people... now do I wait for a fretless one to come along or buy this and rip the frets out!
19. Ooof! Would have loved this if not for the small matter of money!
20.
..I hate to say this, but this isn't doing your business much good. I did ask for the offer, I haven't denied that. You have implied something else though. You have started to become borderline offensive towards my opinions. I have avoided being offensive as it becomes ridiculous, plus, aren't we all a bit passed that?! Just think about exactly what you are discussing here. It was a simple topic, no need for anything else.
I've followed this thread and I have to say as a totally impartial bystander that I certainly don't interpret Alex's attitude in any of this to be 'offensive'! You may well not like Alex's cabs or Alex for all I know but IMHO Alex has stepped forward and taken his time to explain the science behind his views and opinions.
21. I give mine a fresh battery every Christmas, then I know it is done for the next year!
22. As above but the battery draw on a Warwick runs into thousands of hours, so 24 hrs isn't a big deal. I certainly don't bother unplugging the lead between sets at a gig but I'd not be leaving it plugged in all day every day at home.
23. It may seem harsh but with an unknown fault it could render the value as basically a bit less than the cost of the cab section by itself! However, the fix in itself could be a relatively simple job (I remember getting some advice on repeatedly inserting a jack in and out of the effects loop or headphone socket and it fixed a similar problem, saved me virtually binning a good amp as I had no funds to fix) and it would be criminal to sell your amp at virtual scrap value! It genuinely might be worth biting the bullet to get it repaired. If you were local to me and desperate to get rid of it then I'd be offering as little as possible and keeping fingers crossed it was a simple fix BUT aware that I might be simply buying a speaker cab!
