Just to give you some options Kev... I have a Warwick Hellborg 1U rackmount preamp that you can borrow. I know it isn't 'exactly' what you want but it might be worth experimenting (I have a power amp to go with it but it isn't one of the uber-light ones).

I recently picked a Peavey Databass combo (400w into a Black Widow 15") for well in your budget, I leave at the rehearsal space to save me humping gear back and forth! That will EASILY compete with any drummer and you'd not need to upgrade when you were gigging... not offering to sell mine btw.

[/quote] +1 The only advantage of using x2 outputs from an amp (scenario A ) instead of daisy-chaining the 2nd cab from the 1st (scenario B ) is that in B if the lead connecting the amp to cab 1 fails then you have no signal (not good mid gig), however in A, you still have one cab functioning if the same lead were to fail to one of the cabs (you could then try and sort the lead between sets or after the gig). <edited for emoticon faff>

The cut-away contours on your JV look very 'curved' but when I compare the Sados to the Buscanti and the bass you posted, the Sados are a lot closer to the JV.

I'm looking at two Sadowsky basses right now and they are quite a 'soft' wide curve to the body edges and I'm pretty sure that the two USA basses I had were similar.

Thomastik Infeld Alloys work for me on Warwicks (oddly they don't quite sound as good on my Sterling).

It could be that the Hartke is marked for pre-amp out/power amp in but likely as not it'll be an effects loop which you'd simply get an instrument cable/patch lead (not a short speaker cable) and go from the output of the Peavey into the effects return of the Hartke; obviously then plugging your bass into the Peavey (sorry if the last bit is unnecessary but best put that in just in case you are a novice).

[/quote] I was packing away after a gig when I had a sudden thought that I might have switched the fan off when I'd been doing some acoustic/home rehearsals several weeks before; checked the switch and sure enough it had been off for at least a couple of gigs. I hadn't been driving it mega hard (still a 5 piece rock covers band playing pubs and not using the PA to support backline) and it didn't seem to be 'that' hot at the end of the gig, certainly not enough to worry me!

IMHO about £100 on ebay. Is it any good... if you like Ashdown!

I also have a 400w Glockenklang 'Heart Core' amp which has no fan and is passive cooling, it gets warm but nothing that I'd consider 'hot'. Patently amps designed well and built with quality components can manage very well without a fan BUT were I to rack this in a small rack with no space above or below then I'd want to have some air blowing across the heatsinks.

Loved the sound of the Star bass... was it 'effected' in any way or do you think that was dry like the others

The Thunderfunk has a switch-able fan (generally for studio use) and in fact even with the fan off at a gig, the amp can dissipate the heat without the need for a fan so long as you aren't cranking it/going daft.
