  1. I love hearing stories about how records were made and so on… here’s my favourite which was related by Al Kooper about the distinctive organ on Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone”. Al was in a recording session for Dylan “Like a Rolling Stone” – on guitar. The producer was not happy with what he was doing so asked him to sit out. Then Al saw the organ in the corner of the room and asked the producer if he could play that instead. The producer was just about to say ‘no’… but got called away to take a phone call. So Al joined the session on organ. But because he didn’t know the chord structure very well he waited till the rest of the band had changed chord before he did… so that’s where he gets the great behind-the-beat organ part. Then the producer was going to bury the organ in the mix…. but Bob Dylan heard the organ part and said “Hey- what’s that?” and insisted that it was pushed right up in the mix. So please give any stories etc behind the recording - incidents, techniques, whatever!
  2. Here's a single by Billy Nomates - as featured on the Sleaford Mods track a few posts up:
  3. Yes, ..... he didn't even say it plays like butter!
  4. I hear Billy Nomates quite a bit on 6music, and it’s all really good stuff. Same goes for Sleaford Mods of course!
  5. I would have been annoyed too.... but as I am seeing it from a distance: I do have a bit of sympathy for StudioSpares and all other on-line vendors who have to deal with the threat from on-line robots. (Wow a few years ago that sentence would have sounded like science fiction!). OK they handled it badly, but maybe give them the chance to sort it out (which means ignoring the automated (?)response for now). If you don't get a decent response and/or resolution after a a couple of days, then I maybe I would not be so supportive of them.
  6. yes, I remember hearing the 'Relax' demo back then... I expected it to be rubbish from all the stories I heard. Yes the production was nowhere near as good, but the playing and arrangement was there. But mega-producers like Horne work how they work..... and get the results.
  7. I'm thinking of getting an Akai Mini play. I can use it as Midi controller at home, and as a live-sounds keyboard for simple lines in a band. Any opinions? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Akai-Professional-Mini-Built-board/dp/B07HDB12FM/ref=sr_1_3?adgrpid=60375068365&dchild=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw0On8BRAgEiwAincsHAvFl7qYrMsSbMtlSLCCNxjP3x3nonPlPkw3tyXKsaygz2LVieMbxhoC2pQQAvD_BwE&hvadid=310780406794&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=1006687&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=3059770512213661488&hvtargid=kwd-538938279260&hydadcr=27309_1732171&keywords=akai+mini+play&qid=1604007504&sr=8-3&tag=googhydr-21
  8. Just been listening to Don Letts 6music show from Sunday. It was billed as dub special, but as is often the case it was all types of reggae, not just dub. It annoys me a bit when people use dub as a term for reggae.... but maybe I should get out more! Anyway, here's my pick from the first hour:
  9. Funny (IMO) story about the band I was in with my brother........ Me and a drummer had been trying to get a band together for a year or so. We looked around for other people for ages, when I eventually (!) remembered that I could ask my brother to join, and drummer could ask his mate from old Uni to join. Finally we had a working version of the band. We'd been rehearsing for nearly a year and at a rehearsal me and brother were chatting (must have been about family or something) and Uni-mate says in a surprised tone "Are you two brothers?" I'd assumed that the drummer would have told him that as part of induction into the band but......... hey, that's drummers!
  10. Musically I don't like it... but that is due to it not being my bag than the performance. I saw similar thing on the Reggae thread that worked OK though. In principle I don't have problem with people doing this as way to collaborate and stay involved in music...... but I don't expect that mass-participation collabs will yield better results than music made by the usual amount of collaborators.
  11. I do love people who can sing, but it's not everything. I'll explain. About 20% of the music I love features someone who would be considered as being able to sing well. About 40% features someone who would be considered as not being able to sing, but I think is a great singer.... Bob Dylan, The Fall, Sex Pistols etc. About 40% I love but the singer is neither here nor there.. they deliver the song OK, but it's the overall package I love. A well known example of this (but not from my love list) is New Order. Ask a hardcore New Order fan what they love about NO and they won't say "Barney's Voice" But in the spirit of the thread here is a fantastic vocal performance:
  12. OK, serious answer time. When I first fell in love with music, I was quite tribal about it. So mainly listed to music in my genre (punk, new wave, post-punk) Over the years it has naturally expanded to all sorts of genres so now I enjoy soul, blues folk, metal and so on. There's still a bunch od stuff I don't like, so I think that is what I really don't like rathe than just prejudice. Problem is that there is so much I like that I don't have time to dig too deep into all the different types of music. But I get by 🙂!
  13. Great band! They are one of the gigs I would have went to but for COVID... tickets valid for new date. I will take a listen later - streaming is banned during work hours st home.
  14. I heard stories from a producer/manager (can't remember which) from around time of first DS album. They P/M said that David Knopfler wrote some decent songs too, and that the P/M suggested that DS should have a split of something like 8 Mark and 2 Dave songs per album. Mark said "no way". Another time Dave was discussing how to approach song.... "should I do it like this or that, what do you think Mark" to which Mark replied "I don't care what you do" Allegedly anyway.
  15. I was in an originals band with my brother...... we were both in our late twenties at the time, so well past our arguing phase. The band as whole was pretty democratic, so no room for ego or strops. The band split due to external circumstances..... but one thing in life I'm really grateful for is that I had a couple of years in a band with my brother. We have a studio demo tape to mark it.... and our mum has a copy & MP3s of her beloved boys!
  16. I guess that's fair enough for a tribute..... but I'm impressed how quickly they rumbled you given that you had most of it nailed!
  17. I'm another one who is surprised at the restriction. But if you choose to comply with it (and no judgment if you do) I guess the best way is to use the "Chippendales" clause for the female singer.... for the age thing just say in the ads what your age range is - and where you would normally say "but we don't care what age you are", don't.
  18. Come on everybody! How else are we going to encourage the next generation of bass players if we don't have x-factor style competitions?
  19. Welcome to Basschat! Question: I want to do X, how would you guys do it? Answer: You do it however you want, and don't let anybody tell you otherwise!
  20. Can't speak for Bass covers, but if it helps my covers band has settled on the following: 80-90% of the time we do as close to faithful as we can get. 10-20% we follow the general sprit of the original, but not exact. Rarely if ever do we 're-imagine' the song.
  21. It's all in the name. If the band has a cool name, then I will like them.
  22. Yeah, like I was saying there's hardly any available.......... only 31 different ones
