How do I get the Strokes' Juicebox bass sound
PaulWarning replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
It's a Stingray, if memory serves me well.
that suprises me tbh, never got my ray to sound anything like that -
Woah, what a great sound. Having had the Precision/Marshall MB set-up, I`d go for the Classic Channel, Gain Boost on quite high, and the Mid Selector on the fully clockwise setting, then set bass/mid/treble to suit.
thanks I'll give it a go, I thought there might be some sort of FX overdrive pedal in there somewhere -
You'd need the exact same bass, strings, amp, effects, EQ settings, compression, mixing console, playing technique etc etc. I wouldn't bother personally, find your own tone!
as with writing songs, start off trying to copy something then you finish with something else, hopefully, it's called inspiration or plagiarism depends how close you get -
just been listening to Juicebox by the Strokes, anybody know how to get that sound? I've got A MIA standard P with a Marshall MB 4210 combo BTW
-
some bassists by pass the tone and volume controls because they think they get a purer sound, Mike Dirnt does this I read somewhere, I hardly ever use the controls on my bass, use the amp or FX pedal to make any changes to volume or tone, I took of the controls on my spare bass, a right handed symmetrical Hondo professional II, because I'm cack handed I 'converted' it to left handed and they just got in the way
The hollies were a fiftys band....
no they weren't -
Bam. it's just a song, now. I doubt too many people will get hung up on it, at face value. The punk movement, which was the real cause for contention, is long gone.
I tend to agree, there's loads of songs where people get entirely the wrong idea about what it's about cause they don't really listen to the lyrics, I'm as guilty as anyone, it was years before I realised This is England was as unpatriotic as it is, and we've been accused of being a racist band on more than one occasion for playing White Riot

if it's the should the pistols play GSTQ poll I've just seen it, not quite the same thing but close, the pub we're playing at sometimes lets us use his upstairs room for free to practice and we're back on Friday using the this room with TV Smith, perhaps we should just ask the landlord if we should play it, not very punk rock, huh.
Saw Evan Dando solo about ten years ago and was unimpressed. His sound was poor and he totally failed to engage the audience.
He's not improved
My sister went to see him, her overriding impression was that he needs a good wash and a long stint in rehab. Mrs. Robinson wasn't on the album, so I can understand them not playing it.
It was on the later versions when it had been a hit, in fact that was the reason the album took off, it bought it to the attention of the public, and he did play other well known stuff not on the album like Outdoor Type, All My Life etc. Got to agree with your sister though about needing a wash, and he could have been on something, he certainly wasn't interested in the gig

went to see the Lemonheads in Derby last night and have to say I was disapointed, no attempt by Dando to interact with the audience, just the occasional "thanks" and "this next song is", his vocals were muddy, no encore and no Mrs Robinson. What about the bass I hear you cry, well it was some sort of Jazz, wasn't near enough to see which type, sounded ok when he played a couple of notes on his own at the beginning to make sure it worked, a bit on the trebly side, good for Mrs Robinson if they'd played it, but it didn't cut through at all when the rest of the band were playing just a bit of thumping, which is surprising considering how jangly the guitar sound is. Anybody else seen them? was it just an off night?

it's all about personnel taste really, I had a ray, now got a P and much prefer the tone of that over the ray, but that's just my opinion
Try then with a stiff pick for a week*, if you can't hear a difference then you ARE deaf *Warning, will result in a horrendous mess and needing new strings
guess I must be, I use a 1mm pick all the time, but they haven't shed their 'skin' this time, someone on here told me to be careful not to catch them on the bridge holes when putting them on as it damages the coating, works for me
-
just put some new elixir nanowebs on after having the old ones on for a year, about 30 gigs and practices most weeks, and I can't tell any difference, either I'm even more deaf than I thought or they're very good value foe money, £27 off ebay

Jazz v. Precision Bass- question from [relative] newbie
PaulWarning replied to barnettiuk's topic in Bass Guitars
I too would say a P is better for a power trio, not the other way round, I've had a Jazz, although it was a MIM one, I've now got a MIA P and I would say the P definatly helps fill out the sound of the band more than a Jazz. -
Hondo Professional II headless conversion/refurbishment
PaulWarning replied to Ian2k's topic in Build Diaries
hey I've got one of these, was my first bass, got me started, bought it for £40 of a mate, still use it as a back up for my MIA P, it don't sound half bad either, good luck with the restoration, don't expect to make any money though, one of the reasons I've still got mine is it sounds far better than what's it worth, if that makes sense. -
I find it easier to remove the nut and use emery cloth to rub down the bottom of the nut, and if you go too far shim it with some paper/cardboard, someone will probably come on here now to tell me that's not how you do it, but it is safer, no fret board damge
-
make sure you get the polarity right, I had one of those and fried it by getting it wrong, no protection against it as with some pedals
