1.
I'm pretty sure that he is a 'true' lefty, see link below. http://www.beatlesag...b/lefthand.html Though I think my bass tutor mentioned that he's actually right-handed but plays lefty.
Read somewhere, maybe have been on here, that Philip Norman started it off the 'Paul is right handed story' in one of his none too accurate books about the Beatles, and as with a lot of things it gets repeated until everybody believes it
2. a few weeks ago I started getting a very mild electric shock when my lips touched the mic, the PAT tested totally sealed, visually undamaged kettle lead was replaced on the PA amp, end of problem, not sure what this proves tbh, apart from stuff is only safe when it's tested
3. I've had several, I've still got my MIJ professional II made in 1981, it's still my backup bass used to think it was really good till I compared it to a MIA P, bit unfair I know, the later manifactured ones I had weren't very good, I soon moved them on, basically if it's a MIJ one it should be ok, if not
4. first thing I do is google the tab, then slow the song down and move it up an octive to bring out the bass line on audacity, then work out how accurate the tab is, they vary from utterly hopeless to nearly there to spot on, if there's no tab available I use music mentor, it's not entirely accurate but it points you in the right direction. I'm not very good at doing it by ear without having something to get me started
5. used to gig with A Hondo professional MIJ, use a MIA P now, cuts through loads better, most punters haven't got a clue what a bass does, or why a band sounds crap when it's not there
6. don't know whether all amps are the same but the effects send and return on my old Carlsboro bass beasty by passes the preamp, which is handy in this case cause the preamp is knackered, so in an emergency I can use my effects pedal (zoom 506II) as the preamp, plug into the effects return, and still use the combo
7. cheers guys, since I posted this I did a google search, perhaps should have done that first, there's a thread about it on talk bass, it's not as unusual as I first thought, in fact some people say it's a sign of a very good neck
8.
Taking a cue from the posts here I brought two sets of light elixirs from the US fleabay. All in with shipping it was £63 so assuming I don't get stung on import it works out as a decent saving.
I've been getting DR neons from the states for a while now, never had any trouble with extra charges
9. just been setting up my MIA P which I'd noticed was getting fret buzz higher up the neck with relief of 8 thou ( my feeler gauge is imperial), so I starting tightening the truss rod, I've stopped the fret buzz with a string height of 2mm at the 12 fret ( and I play pretty hard with a 1mm pick) but I've now got next to no neck relief, is there anything to worry about?
10.
It's easy. Anyone who wants to read it posts their name in the thread. Then, when the person who has it has finished it, they post in the thread. The next person on the list sends a PM with their name and address. The book is sent to them free of charge, on the understanding that when it's their turn to pass it on, they pay the postage.
OK got it, can I go after Joeyfivebags please?
11. wouldn't mind, how does it work? do you PM your address to the next person on the list? Trouble with a lot these rock bios is they concentrate too much on the drugs and sex and not enough on the songs and band relationships. Just read Rod Stewart's and at the end I just thought what a twat. edit, a very lucky twat
12. Macca plays drums right handed, this probably because Ringo, despite being left handed plays drums right handed, so it saved swapping the kit round, Coincidently, I play the Drums right handed, but am a lefty in almost every other way, it's just easier when using someone else's kit, and provided you haven't got a really weak right foot is not a problem
13.
I've heard that about Hendrix, and have the same issue myself, but I've not heard that about Sir Paul.
just found this From Rolling Stone issue 482, September 11, 1986 Kurt Loder: On a more trivial but similarly ancient note, a new biography of you claims that Paul McCartney, the world's most famous left-handed bassist, is actually right-handed. True? Paul McCartney: No, I'm quite definitely left-handed. and this www.theguardian.com/music/2010/feb/25/jimi-hendrix-ambidexterity-virtuosity
14.
part of the problem is that althought 13% of the population are lefty's I would say at least half of them learn right handed because right handed guitars are more readily available, a vicious circle I suppose I'm always a bit mystified as to why we play the way we do given that whatever handedness we are, in our case the left hand is the one with most dexterity, logic would dictate that would be the hand we use for the fingering of the fret board. Wonder if there's any right handed people that play left handed?
just read that Macca does everything else right handed, but couldn't play guitar till he switched it round, is this true? and am I a narcissist for quoting myself?
15.
My first was a Laney 100W 1x15 combo. Crap. Might has well have had a hamster farting in the corner for all the volume I got out of the useless piece of junk....
I use a Laney Session Bassman75 watt at band practice (with drummer)and rather like the sound I get out of it, perhaps it had a fault? knackered speaker perhaps? I had to replace mine at one point
16. they'll be exceptions but pick players generally have the bass lower, if I play sitting down for any length of time my wrist starts to ache, how low? see my avatar
17. you think that's bad, went to see Sham 69 once, no Jimmy Pursey, no announcement, we thought the replacement singer was a roadie, the other week Sham were advertised as being on in Derby, no Pursey or Parsons, just a couple of guitarist who played with them before they made it, I don't mind not seeing the original band as long as it's made perfectly clear on the promo material, if it's not it's a con
18.
I only really do two things now on my passive bass, full volume and full tone .......
Yep I've never understood this obsession with bass guitar controls, amps do it far better, and there's plenty of EQ pedals out there if that's your bag, I'd happily bypass the controls on my bass if they were playing up
19. the 2 things I use is audacity to slow things down and move things up an octave, really makes the bass line stand out and a program called digital music mentor. But I don't do bass solos btw
20. I sold a 3eq Ray and bought a MIA P, never regretted it, sits in the mix better
21. not many singers can manage it in G like Noddy, we're doing it this Christmas in D and we're doing the intro F Em D C A, so in G it would be Bb Am G F D, think thats right, doesn't sound much like the record though, on that there's no guitar just bass and harmonium, according to wiki anyway
22.
I don't see Nellie The Elephant as a cheesy song. It's just a fun song.
yep, you've convinced me, one man's cheesy is another man's classic is a another man's fun song
23.
we intend to finish with that on Saturday , the place bounces , it is really fun to play. We will play most except van morrison , proclaimers and beautiful south , the drummer just starts seething when the mention even crops up .
500 miles always goes down well Fa d da da
24.
Always goes down well and very easy to play....you wont regret playing it
once you've all figured out where all the stops are
25.
Last Saturday 'Swords of a 1000 men' went down a storm and I consider that to be a bit cheesy
We play that I'm always surprised how well it goes down, never thought it was that bigger hit
