Zero fret is just one more ordinary fret to the fretboard. There still is a nut like thing keeping the strings in place in a bass, if the tuners are at that end. https://bassbros.co.uk/sold-basses/1986-vigier-passion/ Headless needs only that zero fret and the headstock, because the distance between them is so short.

But sorry everyone: that picture was taken before the zero fret was in place. Luthier used a normal fretwire.

There's a zero fret. There was no space for a nut. Bad pic, it's not visible here.

That headstock, as well as the tuning system, came from my machine. Luthier took - or will take - care of the wooden parts. Hopefully sooner than later. It has taken quite some time.

Although my project has been seriously delayed, as the luthier is travelling round the world, my headstock can be seen here. That bigger hole is the access to the truss rod. The material is Alumec-89, which is very nice to machine.
  6. How is that Steroids, sorry, Atreides sounding? What does it do? Where did you get that timer? Really clear display.
  7. Rob didn't assemble inserts. The heel was intact when I bought mine (J and MM).
  8. I put inserts to my Status neck, but they certainly are bigger than those in the picture. It's my travel bass, and I can detach the neck quickly with an Allen key.
  9. Is that insert on a short side? I surely would use a longer one. Maybe one size bigger, too.
  10. @disssa has been away for so long, he probably makes something like a V16 or similar.
  11. Seller can say that this is the first bass belonging to the golden 24 K collection.
  12. I would opt for Noll Mixpot, and that original board, although the preamp is a treble boost. Pickups are side stacked humbuckers. They do not mix well with other pickups for obvious reasons.
  13. By the way: the easiest way to measure scale length, is to multiply the length from nut to the 12th fret by 2. Fine tuning bridge tends to mess the measurements.
  14. That's a new feature: pick cleaner by the bridge. Is this good for (recycled) m...
  15. All suggestions we make become useless after you visit a shop. Try all which please your eye and compare. Brand is of no importance here, but the feel. Try also those out of your preset price range although the fretless Overwater may raise your standards and pricing substantially...
  16. When there's a need for modulation (usually a flanger) or fuzz. The freq selection at 400 Hz, and no blend. Lows are clear and powerful, and the higher band can push quite a lot of fx, if in need. Surprisingly powerful pedal.
  17. May I ask, what do have in the loop of the Divaricator? Adjustments are very different to mine.
  18. Several good points. A tiny addition: balancing can be done electronically, therefore an audio transformer is not a must. Opamps are cheaper than say, a Lars Lundahl transformer. https://www.lundahltransformers.com/
  19. Is this beauty 34", 35", or 36"?
  20. Somewhat different gig, because of the arrangings: there was one ambassador in place, and we needed IDs and everything felt pretty strict. But after the set up, sound check, and some jazz people went crazy! They sang practically all songs. We had to add more songs to the fourth set, as they just shouted for more. Sets: jazz standards, start me up, sing-a-long, and ring-and-shout! Because of the ambassador, we decided to break one rule: the last song was All you need is love. We have never, ever played Beatles live. Maybe the most complicated song for us was Peter Gabriel's Book of love. It is slow, very intimate, and was new for us. The owner of the place asked this, and we decided to make it happen. Equipment: - Vigier Passion II 4-string - IE Xero DL envelope, Phat Beam comp, Boss SY-1 synth - Glockenklang Soul - alusonic 2 x 12" - at the moment several totally dead fingers
  21. Don't know about DRs. GHS long scale plus and some D'Addario sets have been long enough for my former MG Quantum 35" and a custom fretless 36".
  22. 400+ probably means the weight of it. But lovely sound! What is somewhat peculiar: why do you have to do weight lifting, and try to raise the amp on top of the stack? The amp works well on the floor, too. No vibrations to the amp from the cabs. (My friend had a Trace 1818X cab, which was not only heavy, but nearly impossible to carry. Those handles were at awkward height. He sold it quickly.)

By the way: where's @disssa? Making the ultimate preamp, or has he turned to power amps lately?
  24. Whatever you choose, check also the weight. K&M isn't very heavy, and the price included a functional bag.
  25. As you already answered yourself: this has been done quite many times on any J. If you want to have blend, use Bourns MN 250k (or 500k) pot. Add a switch pot to the system, and you can put the pickups in series without drilling any extra holes.
