1.
Indeed, a lot of walking bass on upright, particularly faster tunes tends to be well ahead of the beat. This is partly because a double bass speaks more slowly than a ride cymbal so the note sounds later than it actually is. One of the more fundamental things to a getting a good groove happening in a rock band is for the bassist to sit behind the beat to add width and swagger to the groove. And something else to consider is that when playing drums different parts of the kit may sit in different places relative to the beat. A common example is the snare being furthest behind the beat - listen to Al Jackson Jr on 'Green Onions' - whilst some of Bonzo's amazing grooves have really cool shifts. The vibe on 'Kashmir' is due to the kick and snare sitting back, with non-downbeat kicks behind further behind than those on the downbeats, and the hi-hat pushing ahead of the beat. Of course talking about this is one thing, doing it is another. If you want to get better at playing around the beat you have to learn how to feel these placements. Whatever you do do not try to consciously sit ahead or behind the beat or you will not groove at all! Alex P.S. And don't even attempt to do the D'Angelo/?uestlove/Pino/Saadiq thing unless you want your brain to melt or you're such a bad mofo that you can't help yourself! Go here for elucidation - actually this is so badass I shall embed it:
Oh yeah. Just strapped on the Precision and lost myself....Good Style. I want a Pino Precision now.

You'll not find a bigger one.
You don't post anything about what you like as a bass player, it's all really childish and a bit sad. PM me if you want to talk. Humour is an art and you seem to loose it when others confront what you say, rather than carry on the gags. If this is an experiment on your part to get reactions then a bass forum is a bit low key.
 3. What a warrior, the only bass guitarist who actually nailed his notes to the flag post.

 10. I've just recovered enough to write a few lines about last night. My wife and I were lucky enough to get tickets for the concert last night and only five rows back, we were able to witness a very personal performance of some of, in my opinion, one of historys greatest compossers and saxophonists pieces. The Wayne Shorter Quartet included Brian Blade, drums, Danilo perez, piano and John Patitucci on double bass. Behind them in this stunning Art Deco concert hall were the mighty Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra playing Shorter's amazing score. The Quartet were leading this mighty orchestra through some of the most transendentlal, cosmic, life affirming sound scapes I have ever heared and leading all of this was the master himself supported by the Phils conductor. John Patitucci was amazing, so dynamic, emotional, humorous and appearing absolutly in his element. The power and phyisicallity of the Quartet sent seismic waves to the orchestra which in turn rebounded to the four resulting in a room that had an unbelievable amount of energy. After TWO standing ovations the players left the stage and my life was changed forever. We bought Special Chow Mein and chips on the way home...... what an enchanted evening.

 20. 1984. Ibanez Blazer, natural, black scratch plate, Precision a like. £99, played it through a Trace stack in the music shop, Fusion Music Birkenhead, so it sounded amazing, got it home, plugged it into my hi fi and blew the speakers. I was 18 and didn't now any better. Had to buy new tweeters for my Wharfdale Diamonds. Stranglers and Level 42 basslines, happy days.
 21. I'm in Birkenhead/Liverpool will keep eyes open in Cash Converters, places like that. Probably smack rats. Do you have the serial numbers, photo's, stuff like that? Good luck, Steve.
