2. Great bass there old son.
3. Hello mate, 0702 starts off the serial number, so, just coming up to 7 years old. Waiting for 100-40 Hotwires for S2 and KGB replica. Dead strings do the natural harmonics and sustain of this bass a complete diservice, that's what fingers and eq are for. The S2 is a monster to play and the eq is just how I expected it to be, musical but brutal. Really looking forward to rehearsals with this, as our old drummer has returned to the fold, so, will be playing it live soon.
4.
I had one too ages ago, I totally agree with Steve, I though it was pretty awful and weedy sounding really lightweight though. That's why the originals were made from carbon fibre. When Ned Steinberger came up with the original design, he found that it only sounded good when it was clamped to a workbench which added to the density of the instrument.
Hi Kev, I was going to say that I use to have nightmares about the neck on mine becoming limp and unplayable because it use to move so much.
5. Hi Guys, at last, some pics of the S2. Black basses are a b*****d to take photos of, so apologies in advance.
6. Gone are the days of bargains to be had from abroad.... for now. I got a really nice Fender Japan Jazz off Ebay, £65 P&P for 3 days door to door (so to speak), no customs. I was standing in line, waiting at the Post Office and I could see a guitar box. As I got closer, I could see Japanese print on one of the lables. I asked to pick it up, with I.D. and ticket and I couldn't believe it when the guy said there you go, thank you. This was last year, now, it would cost £140 to send.
7. Hi Mike, I played one for a couple of weeks back in '86 when they first came out, upside down, as I too am a lefty. I thought they were very uninspiring and awkward to play, even though the controls didn't get in the way. The sound, as I remember, was always dull, with no bottom end. Maybe they're better now.
8. How much then?
9. He looks like a mix between Tubbs and Edward from The League of Gentlemen.
10. This builder was a Carl Thompson disciple. I think his designs tweek CT's to another level.
11.
Andy Rourke is the reason I play bass. I learned most, if not all The Smiths bass lines at one point in my life and my poor mother who bought me my first bass had to endure that (as well as early New Model Army stuff [Stuart Morrow was it..??]). An absolute bass genius and seriously up there with Jamerson in his musicality and ability to have a song within a song, albeit with a lot less of them under his belt. Very highly regarded around these parts. D. PS another bass hero of mine from the past is Will Heggie. A virtual pint to whoever tells me what band he was in (but not his most famous one!). No Google searches either!! I met him a few times and he's astounding with the chordy stuff.
I love The Cocteau Twins but I think you mean Lowlife? I meet Liz Fraser at a party once, she was incredibly horny, my then girlfriend didn't approve.
12. Love 'em all. The "Dan" are awsome.
13. How does it sit in a live on stage mix, a F.O.H. sound, and in your monitors?.
14.
You have a girlfriend that wants to start playing bass on a 6 string? Marry her.
A fretless, 6 string playing girlfriend, damn, your sex must be incredible. Either colossal detail, or, Herculian stamina. Or she's a really keen bassist, or, your a sadistic bastard.
15.

Look Edward, Chilllderen. No Tubbs, they're not chilllderen, they're Monsters.
16. When string are dead, guess what? they're dead. THEY CAN'T BE BROUGHT BACK FROM THE DEAD.

18. Not much on a headed bass,
19. Hi Marc, I knew this was your quest, hope you have lots of good times with this rig. Now then, what cabs are you using? Is this the McIntosh, or Krell, or Mark Levinson, or Audio Research of bass amps?
20.
Hey People.. I have recently aquired a CIJ 62 Jazz..Its a great bass but the tuning key are very wobbly, and go out of tune very easily.. Is there any way i can stiffen them up, i can literally spin them around...I know there are small plastic washers in some tuning keys..Could these have worn?? If i cant fix these i would like to replace them..but at £80 squids a pop, they aint cheap.. Where is the best place to get the 62 keys as i know they are a slightly different shape to the later tuning keys..(more rounded) Also did the 62 Jazz require you to take the neck off to adjust the action..It a real pain to have to do this!!! Thanks
Welcome to my world , the neck adjustment is a bitch but worth the effort. Wobbley tuners, I only have this on my G string, live with it, or replace.
21.
Is there also an element of nostalgia to this? People always bang on about The Beatles being the best thing ever, and whilst I appreciate their significance and enjoy their music myself I wouldn't call them the greatest band ever because they don't hold that level of personal importance to me. In 30 or 40 years will people revere Radiohead in the same way or does the elevation of certain bands, such as those you mentioned, to a godlike status make the elevation of successors that much more difficult because part of how much we enjoy music is on that personal level and often involves some level of nostalgia. The great music being produced now might be entirely electronic in construction, would that affect your acceptance of it into the same echelon as your personal favourites?
Popular music, ie, Pop Music has been around for a 1,000 odd years. In the early 60's, The right time, the right set of communication networks, the right economic situation was primed for the right pop group. The Beatles were the first band that were able to communicate ideas of sex, anarchy, hedonism, murder, mental ilness, black magic, loneliness and all other human emotions and failings/celebrations, into 3 mins of perfect popular music. The Beatles are without doubt, the most important pop band ever.
22.
I've just borrowed our guitarist's late-70's silverface Bassman 50 valve head for a few days- had a quick play with it hooked up to the Compact earlier this evening, running my US Jazz (with Nordstrand NJ4's) straight in. WHAT a sound! With the treble and bass knobs up full (and the Deep switch off), I'm getting this lovely grind tone when I dig in, yet with loads of punch and thickness too. I don't even have to crank the volume particularly high to get it either! I'm definitely going to have to try this set-up for recording... Right, I'm off to try it with my old Squier JV P-bass next!
Hi Etienne, any chance we can get together and A,B,C this with my Glockenklang and Tech Soundststem cabs? I live in Birkenhead.
23. A few months from new? Look a bit tatty and a bit expensive.
24.
Hang out and play at open mic nights and just chat to people.
Wot e sed.
