Gorgeuos daphne blue Spitfire. Is that a standard GB circuit? I don't see them with a stacked pot too often..

Played a California with J/J Delano pups the other day. I'm a total gear snob, and thought it was an amazing bass. Big fan of Sandberg. Relic is very sexy on this

All great suggestions in my opinion. New, check out the Squiers too..

Great pre amp. Has the switch you are after. Not hifi like status though, East pre's are much nicer than that .

Stopping buzz from single coil pick ups
fingerz replied to alanday1975's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hi there mate, I'm not too familiar with the Ric 4003 set up. If you balance single coil pickups (i.e. set the pickups so as they are 50/50 or both up full) this should go a long long way to making the bass quiet. Does this effect the noise? Also, if the bass acts as an aerial, so the noise level changes as you manoeuvre the position of the bass, then this would also suggest noise or RF is getting in to the system from outside - i.e. a screening or insulation problem. This can be improved by adding copper shielding or conductive silver paint etc .. If these things don't effect the noise then it is likely to be an earth or other electrical problem. It can be a pain as often instruments suffer in high activity environments but then behave themselves on the bench when the tech is looking at it! If it occurs when you select one pickup or the other (as in my first suggestion), and this is how you like running the sound - I'm afraid single coil pickups just do this and it's something you will have to live with or change the pickups. Just like all jazz basses. I love singles, and nothing else sounds like them, but this is in their character. Single coils should be wired in Parallel so as when they are both turned up full they have hum cancelling ability, if you bias one pickup over the other you unbalance the pickups and this allows hum and interference to get in if it's hanging around. Saying that, if I've ever had problems in a noisy venue, I just run my jazz bass with both Pups at the same volume and it's quiet as you'd ever need, especially for live playing. Good luck, message me if you need any more info. HOpe that wasn't too patronising !! Thought it may be useful background.. -
I've not owned a Sadowsky, but have played a few in my time - defo in the double figures. I think your 'expectations' need to be specified in order for anyone to answer that question properly. But then it's so subjective. ALL basses vary, it's the simple truth. Some bass brands I love have built basses that I'm just not that into due to inherent tone, neck profile etc.. I always remember ONE sadowsky I played that blew me away. A 4 string NYC, but others I've been less into, they aren't generally my bag but there's exceptions to every rule. I can't emphasise strongly enough the importance of playing an instrument first. It's a big gamble to order one, with the import costs etc and know it's going to be right for you. Rogers work is fantastic, I'm purely talking about that thing of 'horses for courses', and those tiny variations between instruments. If you have a Sadowsky itch, why not try out everything available in the UK first? And the Metro's too? You might just surprise yourself with one of the cheaper models. But at least that way you stand a chance of knowing it's right for you or not BEFORE you lay out the cash. I wish you a successful and enjoyable hunt for your Sadowsky!

is it noticeably quiet? I mean, I've had active basses that are really 'hot', and also ones that are more inline with the output of my passive stuff. Actually, a lot of that high output stuff can cause problems with effects (particularly analogue stuff). I like active stuff that isn't really high output for this reason. You may have a gain or pickup balancing control on your preamp inside the bass, in which case you can turn this up a bit. I'd compare it to a passive bass for starters, musician basses tend to be quite lairy.

Hi Fraser, I sent you a PM this morning. Great to hear from you! Cheers, Jo

Interesting theme. I'd love to add a Wal and a couple of old Fenders (P and J) to my list. But ultimately I haven't found the higher the price tag the better the bass - I've played good and bad at all price points. Big fan of all Japanese stuff too like Paul S above..

Love it. Bernie's woodwork is truly the best in the business.
Jo's my third teacher and its definitely third time lucky. Great player, great teacher and top bloke. Great blend of (applied) music theory, technique and all round bass laying knowledge. Highly recommended.
Thank you very much Neal. I'm glad we manage to get some serious stuff in around chatting about basses and gear in general! It's because you're so dedicated and enthusiastic that things are sinking in. Hope you're still enjoying the new toy! Best wishes, Jo

For Sale Only. My beautiful 5 String Deluxe Jazz bass. This is a player, the best Fender five I have ever played. It's the up to date model. Spec: Body: Alder Neck: Maple Fingerboard: Rosewood, MOP blocks and binding Scale length: 34", through body stringing Pre amp: Fender Deluxe - Vol/Pan/Treb/Bass/Mid. Passive Tone. Active/Passive switch. 9V. Pickups: Aguilar Single Coils Finish: 3TS Weight: Around the 10lbs mark - can be exact when I get a new battery for my scales! As you can see from the pictures it is in great condition. There are a few small marks on the lower edge near the jack socket, some minor rub marks to the lacquer in places that you can only see in a reflection. It's been used by me professionally and as such very well looked after. Light swirling on the scratch plate, but looks like new in general. Recently re-strung with dunlops (not my favourite but all i can justify for my back up instrument). Upgraded Aguilar single coils give it a really old school sound, with a big breathy bottom end and growly mids with 'sizzly' top end. With the Pre Amp it sounds awesome, and having the passive option and passive tone gives you sounds for all situations. B string is great, and the bass really sounds full and supportive throughout its range. Great slap tone, really Macus esq. Currently it has Dunlop strap buttons, but I have some Schaller or std ones knocking about I'm sure which I'll swap or chuck in for you if needed. No case with this bass. It has been used in lots of environments including west end shows and has been a totally dependable workhorse. Any questions please ask. Based in Chesham, Bucks. Possibly meet or deliver depending on my schedule. Welcome to come and try, and have a cuppa! Feel free to call: 07719154668 I will add more pictures below later in the week.

Hello hello! I'm pretty flexible, so you're more than welcome to come round for a lesson and take it from there if you'd like. Though regular lessons are really the only way to push your playing on a bit. Thanks for the message and look forward to hearing from you soon! Jo

Hi Luke, This will be to do with the monitor being 'flatter' in it's speaker/cabinet tuning than your bass cab. You are hearing a very flat/uncolored sound due to the nature of the PA set up you are using. Because of this you are getting a really transparent sound (ie, you hear the bass, not the amp so much) which is why all your basses sound so different and like themselves. Lots of bass amps have their own inherent sound, which can make it seem pointless plugging different basses into them. I imagine the PA also suits the room well, as I've had ok and awful experiences when it comes to getting good low end monitoring through PA's.. But because monitors are designed generally for mid range and clarity your tone can be eye opening.

Hi guys, I just thought I'd bump up my ad and keep things current! I am enjoying my private students, many from here, so am always happy to meet bass players for weekly or flexible tuition as it suits you. I had some new starters from the xmas deal I offered, but their course of 6 lessons will end soon, so I'll be able to take on some more people. You can check out my website and my Increasing youtube bank of playalongs if you would like to find out more about me... I can't comment on your exact amp/experience, but my volume pot is opposite the fan on the back of my amp, which blows dust directly at that pot. I just had to replace it when it was serviced, they are pence to replace 9 times out of 10..

I bought a Fender Combo from Loz. Genuine guy, who knows his stuff and has a lot of experience. The experience was really easy and straightforward - good comms. A nice cup of tea too! Highly recommended.

Here's a good one. Not spoken of much over here, but one of those guys that every time I hear, I'm absolutely blown away by. Peter Iannacone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ze9mRyBfS-I
