Nik, wish I'd have known that before I met Mr Hillside, I may have reminded him And, er, told you didn't I ..
Great pic Nig, and has to become the official photo of the 'Basschatters (who love their basses more than anything else) Sad Losers Club'.. Must post mine too!
 2. Some very good advice here Wayne and I think your work is really distinct and eye-catching, so there'd probably be plenty of takers.. Only thing I'd say is that you will seriously need to consider the health & safety implications for you if you started to do a lot more of this work. As I understand it, you'll need to ensure that you protect your lungs from all the extra dust particles, paints and other potential harmful materials used in the process.. The long-term impact if you don't is not good! Best of luck with it
 3.
Really, it's an excellent experience. So much to experience and learn from so many friendly faces, some of whom you'll be familiar with... if not actually know. Think of a bash as BassChat brought to life. Literally.
Perfect description of it!
 4. OK.. So, what's with the window?
 5.
Thanks very much Nik. Half of those covers are Mrs silddx's, Kraftwerk is hers, Mine seem to be all prog rock and hippie things. They're all real covers. I wish I'd been at that Hyde Park show! I would love to hear the Hillage story! He seems like a very opinionated and forthright bloke, I wonder sometimes if he believes/ed all that stuff his lyrics are about
She has good taste does Mrs silddx! Not that you don't mind.... That was an amazing gig.. Amongst many others I remember that Hillage was on the bill and Kiki Dee IIRC? Queen were absolutely amazing that night! Ok, I know it's off-topic but the Hillage story is that he was producing a band called 'Yes Lets' and they were using Studio 1 at this rehearsal room for all their pre-production. Hillage had ALL his gear in there and the room was jam-packed. It was booked for 3 weeks straight and my band was due in the following Monday to start rehearsals for going on tour in Europe. So, we all walk in with our gear first thing on the Monday morning and guess what - he's still in there with all his bloody gear! So he and I had a huge screaming match.. The people who owned the studio and the indie label we were signed to, had to intervene and calm everything down.. We didn't get in there for 2 more days and our rehearsals for the tour were completely screwed up! As a result, Mr Hillage has never been on my Xmas Card list as I'm sure you can imagine. Talented barsteward though...
 6.
Here's another live version of Suspicious Minds - this is the one that's on "Elvis Live". I love how high the bass is in the mix and how The Scheff goes from laying back a bit to just ripping away and then back again and then... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrRgZ6ReiWk The way it sort of changes gear at 2:40 gives me goose bumps. The high register phrases at 3.15 - 3.45 are just glorious
Absolutely fantastic!!
 7. MK = Milton Keynes I believe...
 8.
But I don't have a Dunn, so I suppose my offer isn't worth a Donald Duck !!! Apologies, S
Gorgeous looking bass Dave! Hope you get the right deal on it; more importantly, I hope you get the bass you need for home and gigs...
 9.
Given that, IMHO, a band is not (or at least ought not to be) merely a collection of individuals doing whatever they individually want, I'd expect to be influenced by my band mates in one or other of two ways. Either: (1) The band is a kind of collective working together cooperatively in which case I'd expect input from the others on what I'm playing and similarly I would comment on what they play. What happens in the end is a result of working together cooperatively. Or: (2) The band has a musical director who is in charge and may ask (or even tell) people to play a particular line or in a particular way. There may be some bands where there is some overlap between (1) and (2).
+1 It's certainly more like (1) in our case but we do have an MD and he has the final say as far as I'm concerned.. Life's too short to get protective and precious over basslines in a covers band!!
 10.
I've posted some tracks on my myspace page with me playing my Wal Mark II Fretless 5. It has sycamore facings and I am using just the bridge pickup with eq flat and pick-attack engaged. There are a couple of solos where the sound is quite exposed for Wal sound listening pleasure. Please excuse the rough nature of the tracks. They were just trial-runs of a couple of compositions and an in-studio improv based on a composed theme. http://www.myspace.com/androkotula
Thanks for the link; really enjoyed 'Sing'! Hope you don't mind me saying but your playing reminds me of the chap who used to play on all the early Kate Bush albums..
 11.
Cheers all Yes, I have seven anuses arranged very carefully, and I love Hillage (is that bad ) and I finally got to chat to him, after 30 years of being a devotee, in the party after the London gig in November, really cool bloke and he told me he goes fishing in the same places I do on the Kennet. He's the last remaining hippie don't you know!
Great collection Nig! The room looks cool too and your choice of album covers is fabulous.. Are you also a Kraftwerk fan like me, or do you just like the album artwork? I remember seeing Steve Hillage at the Queen free Hyde Park Concert in 1976.. And I once had a huge row with him in a rehearsal studio in Holloway Rd about 8 years later, but that's another story!!
 12. Congratulations Eude! Definitely a keeper this one...
 13.
Thank god someone else has picked this up besides Wayne and me. I was beginning to think that it was too soon after the last one - or is that really the case ? Genuinely puzzled as to why everyone's not jumping all over it really
I think it's the fact that Christmas and New Year have just happened..we're all a little bit lethargic and cold! Give it a while and more people will get interested.. Setting a date for it and a venue might help focus everyone's attention too? I'm happy to offer any advice I can by the way - please send me a PM and we'll go from there..
 14.
US$150?!?!!!!! Wow!!
+1 That's still only $650 in total!!
 15. What about.. 'Phat' 'Clangy' 'Twangy' 'Dirty'
 16.
How are these things generally done ? I would be glad to help to make it happen, when it's possible for me to do so T
Hi, Generally, it's organised by a bunch of like-minded Basschatters who have nothing better to do with their time than hang around with other Basschatters and make loads of noise whilst drooling at loads and loads of great gear!! You should have a look at this thread: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...south+east+bass or equally, any of the threads for the SW Bash, the Yorkshire Bash etc, etc.. Hope that helps! Nik
 17. It seems as though some of the regional Bashes are becoming annual events, but a London one would certainly be a good idea I would have thought, given it's the Capital city etc, etc.. And it's definitely time we had another National Basschat one - the last one was in March 2008!
 18.
It's now residing happily in Surrey with a fellow BC'er & getting played more than it was in my house, lol.
Glad to hear it! That was an amazing bass... as is this one! Good luck with the mass clear-out..
 19.
Funnily enough this bass has had the most interest out of the three I have up for sale - what a lot of traditionalists we are eh I'm fairly sure it's 19mm but I'll get my ruler out later today & have a measure up
Very true! So what happened to that lovely Alembic you were selling? Were we all too traditional & cash-poor for it?
 20.
.....because you aint worth it
Excellent! So, Ped should include this in all his marketing materials: "Basschat - the kiss of life for old bastards. .....because you aint worth it!" Obviously, with due respect to all the younger & properly parented Basschatters amongst us, etc, etc!
 21. That's genius! Very enjoyable thanks...
 22.
Interesting thread so far. General conclusion seems to be that some knowledge of theory helps you as a bass player. Now my son is looking at University courses in music. There are courses where you spend 3 years learning music theory! So perhaps a better question is: 'what elements of the whole music language are most useful to a bass player'. Since I cannot spend 3 years learning music theory, what nuggets of theory are most needed for an average bassist? Even better, are these nuggets collected together in any one book, or website? Is a new thread called for, called 'Helpful Music Theory and Tips'?
Good idea, though the Theory and Technique Forum itself is very useful as it is..
 23. Great picture & offer Colin!! Good luck with the sale...
 24. Great looking bass; I bet it sounds good too!
 25.
Pete you are a darn fine player having checked out your vids, and SD bass lines require good feel/timing/technique which you have a'plenty. I have known plenty of fantastic players who don't have a clue why what they do "works ,it just does. I was in the same camp up until about 3 years ago, when someone gave me simple some pointers on "intervals/diatonic charts/scale structure". And I have to say that even some basic theory knowledge opened up my playing, it was a bit like a door opening to a new world (sounds a bit poncy, but only way to describe it) and things started to make sense. I now know why what I do sounds the way it does and I'm able to articulate on a different level with other musicians, particularly in new situations. Certainly gave me confidence to go out and start playing again after a 15 year break. I'm 48, not a 19 year old just starting out, and wish now I had taken this stuff on board years ago. I think I'd have been a more confident musician. But look, if you don't feel you need to know theory, then don't worry about it...you're obviously doing ok without it. You're in a working band, and well respected as a player from what I see on this forum. Happy new year, John
+1 That's pretty much my situation too.. I don't think there's any amount of theory that can teach you to how to 'feel' and understand music, nor how to play well with other musicians in a working band situation..or how to know how to play in a way that is best for the song. IMO, that comes with experience and also depends on whatever talents you were born with. Having said that, I've found that my lack of a better understanding of musical theory has definitely hindered my personal progress as a musician and may have led to me achieving less as a working bass player. And it's also been quite frustrating knowing there's more out there to learn in terms of what I call 'musical vocabulary'.. I can only describe how it feels to me as a player whereby, over the last 30 years or so, it's like I've been trying to speak English but have only had a quarter of the words in the dictionary at my disposal..if that makes any sense? This year I already decided that I'm going to have some lessons to change that, and I can't wait! Going back to the OP, I don't think it matters if you're 'pretty clueless' as far as theory is concerned, provided that you are happy with what you're doing as a bass player.. If you're not though, then maybe it's best to do something about it!
