1. In terms of contact I wanted to know which jack socket of the two barrel types available was right for my streamer (setting aside the fact that this type of socket isn’t very reliable long-term!). I emailed their support address, got a link to the right one the same day, ordered it from Germany and got it in 3 days. Not a custom build but not bad service. One other nugget I noticed in their site is a PDF with a cost of all their overhaul and repair charges. Not cheap but quite cool that you can send your Warwick back to the manufacturer and have them re-fret, refinish or tart up your bass!
2. It sounds so straightforward but feels a bit like “make me into a better player without having to put much effort in”. Don’t be offended - but what you’re looking for is a (wood) shed load of practice, listening to the music you like and copping the fills, lines, solos etc. As someone once said - all the answers are in your record collection (although that’s a bit out of date - maybe I should have said iTunes library). I don’t think you’re going to get much help from a book.
3. Actually the Dorian has a natural 6th. It gives a brighter sound and is far more commonly used over an indicated min7 chord on a jazz chart than the aeolian mode. If you hang on that 6th you’re effectively implying a min13 chord. You can then imply all 3 extensions by (for example on Cmin) playing D, F and A - this is a Dmin triad played over a Cmin chord but implies 9th (D), 11th (F) and 13th (A). Try it against a chord - it sounds interesting!
4. I would dispute that this has a relative major move - it’s a perfectly diatonic tune in Ebmin. If you listen to the original track there’s not one note outside Eb aeolian on the head, other than the flat 5th and the odd passing note to give it a vaguely bluesy sound. Also the solos are a one chord vamp on Ebm. For a true shift to a relative minor/major I would expect to see the root chord treated differently - for example an Eb min maj7 or Ebmin6 on the minor key, and maybe a Gbmaj7#11 on the major. Something that unmistakably identifies the key centre as being different - whether that be a chord someone plays, or a melody line that implies it.
5. But that’s the rub; Larry Graham invented his style of playing to accompany his Mum at church meetings where there was no drummer. Basic thumb and pop is funky and sounds great. The issue with his style/technique is that it is so busy it almost doesn’t need anyone else. Add a drummer, guitarist and keyboard player and there will be no room for (as Prince put it) the most important member of the band - silence.
6. It sounds crap to me. Funny thing is if you look at his left hand there’s nothing there - no bass line or melody to speak of, just a clever percussive flurry. If he’s using it 50% of the time as he says, then more power to him. It very much strikes me as technique for technique’s sake; there is no musical end product.
7. He certainly was a showman; and whilst he may not have particularly highly rated by “jazzers” (whatever that means), he clearly had the playing ability and a larger than life personality. He also toured with some tighter than tight big bands with some ripping arrangements so not just a drummer. He was in some ways a product of his time - and how many well-known musicians aren’t particularly nice people in the flesh? I don’t play drums that well but know enough to recognise a prodigious talent and a huge amount of hard work and practice. The clip at the top actually shows some very deft and nuanced stickwork that is evidence that he wasn’t just a showman but a great musician. Whether he was the ultimate sideman in terms of taste or restraint isn’t really relevant; it’d be a dull world if we were all the same etc etc.
8. Because there are 24 different sounding keys. Whether it is possible to write up another 6 using enharmonics may be an interesting intellectual challenge (as well as a reading nightmare), but it’s not particularly relevant musically. As @ambient says - F# and Gb are the only ones that usually appear (mostly when talking about cycle/circle of 4ths, as F# has 6 sharps and Gb has 6 flats). C#bb, anyone
9. I think it’s worth remembering why we had flats and sharps in the first place; Bb was NOT the same pitch as A#. Since th advent of equal temperament and the standard pianoforte instrument the distinction between them is less relevant. It is however generally true that horn players prefer flat keys and guitarists sharp keys (lots of open strings available). 30 keys? If you’re really into learning to read and write music whilst thinking of double flats and sharps throughout then more power to you; I’m not!
10. Oh, well then at least you’re used to the weight. I tried one once that must have been 12lbs... I've just picked up a SS1 6 string for very reasonable money and it’s a peach - and only 4.5Kgs (I say only...) with perfect balance. I had a quick look on the Warwick site and a new one in this config is €100 short of €7K!!
11. Wunjo had a fiver in this config used up for just under £1K and it was in a right state - plenty of scuffs and almost unplayable. I recently picked up a high end neck thru Warwick for not a lot more than £1K so £800 for a bog standard bolt-on 4 sounds a bit much. The bubinga ones can weigh a ton, too, so make sure you try before you buy!
12. I’ve played a US Cirrus 5 and they are very nice - beautifully made and sounded great. At the time I think it was up for about £1850 so this is an utter bargain!
13. I can appreciate how physiology may affect “feel” - so if you have small hands and/or stubby fingers a smaller neck may be more comfortable, and vice versa. However, although I am not a massive fan of round, deep and narrow necks like some mid/late 70’s Jazz basses, profile doesn’t really matter to me. If I were a top player looking for that final 1% in a performing situation then maybe, but I suspect most of us on here are not. Having taught quite a lot of people over the years, my experience is that people can be worried, almost obsessed with these finer details, that in reality have very little impact in their ability to play or their enjoyment of playing.
14. If you want an even bigger laugh take a look at what else this person has for sale - but be safe in the knowledge that he/she is “outside the congestion charge zone”?!?!
15. I’m almost certain that is a non-original body sanded to look a bit like a Streamer body. The neck joint and finish look all wrong. I was going to say “nice try”, but...
16. Yes, but be quick because there’s only one available, apparently!
17. Unless my eyes are playing tricks this is a broadneck - not sure about the earlier models but the stage 1 5- and 6-strings have been broadneck by default for a long time. The spacing on the bridge pic looks like 20mm. I belive the OP is in Poland as I’ve seen this on eBay.
18. Great bass player - Pump It Up and Every Day I Write The Book are two fine examples of his bass lines with Elvis Costello.
19. I didn't realise you were the Basschat thread police. Good luck with that.
20. It’s a forum. People give their opinion. There is also a search function.
21. True, but there wasn’t much of a range even within those. Plus anyone wanting to buy the most popular brands can buy anywhere and online, so no real differentiation. Wunjo in Denmark St has all the big brands but a decent selection of others too (but then again they are a bass shop). Maybe they’ll build some stock over time. Guitar Guitar opened in Camden a while back and the two stores look very similar on the surface. What I wasn’t impressed with was that the basses are in the back wall and if you want to try one you end up standing/sitting on the small cut-through between the electric and acoustic guitars, and have to keep moving every time someone wants to go from one bit to another. Having music blaring its guts out may amuse the staff but unless you fancy jamming along it isn’t very helpful to get to know a potential purchase!
22. Trying to desperately drag this back on-topic... I popped in there earlier today. Very little to see if you’re a bass player - the usual few Musicmans, bunch of Ibanez and a bunch of Fenders. Won’t be visiting again - I appreciate the store is brand new but there’s more to see almost anywhere else, plus it was full of tourists!
23.
Just switched channels to check out this weeks music, some woman in white playing a piano - WTF - this programme has seriously lost the plot.
Fine to say you don’t like something but ignorance of who or what you are watching and sweeping statements about the program as a whole based on said “just switched channels” says far more about you than your opinion does about said act or program.
24.
I don't get this band. His voice sounds like a strangled cat, they look like dorks, they write streams of hippy goblin nonsense land there's slathers of horrible, tuneless, metal guitar over everything. Mysteriously, all the commenters reckon they're musical geniuses. On the plus side they come across as nice fellas - but this rockumentary is dull as ditch water for all but die-hard fans.
In your opinion. It would be a dull world if we all liked the same things.
