1. Phil Jones Cub or Double4. There's a red Cub for sale on BC at the moment I believe.
2. I've fitted them to nearly all of the various 4 stringers I've had over the years and had one (Roscoe Beck lV) already fitted. I recently fitted one to my Ric 4003s, bit more of a faff than usual as I had to ream the hole a little, but completely worth it. In terms of use, it's always been: tune the E, release the lever, reset the lever and check the tuning until it's right. But once it's set it's all good until you turn the tuner again. It seems others have had not so quite positive results, but I wouldn't hesitate to fit another.
3.
One of these. I've used both in anger and this one is better by far as it has the speaker sim feature - IMHO, of course. http://www.tech21nyc...p/vtbassdi.html
Another vote for the VT DI, a really nicely voiced EQ (mids @ 500k) and then a bunch of Ampeg emulations if you want them; really sweet sounding drive.
4. IIRC it was Pino. "I don't do auditions," or words to that effect.
5.
The temp fill in between Blackmore & Morse could play a bit too
I forgot about Satch, doh! He also played for Jagger at one point too.
6. Bump for a lovely piece of kit at a bargain price - see above.
7. Bump for a bass that gets a lot of love (see above).
8. Despite using the workaday set up of a Strat through a Marshall, Blackmore has a really unique touch and tone; he does stand apart. Yeah, he's painted as, and may well be, a knob, but he has written some pretty catchy riffs and tunes too. Interestingly enough, his now, long time replacement, Steve Morse is a very unique player too. DP have had some fine axe wielders and no mistake; Tommy Bolin was no slouch. Apologies for the slight derail - as you were.
9. 3. A Korg Pitch Black on my pedal board, the free clip on one that came with a BGM subscription (not a very good one I might add) and a tuner app on my phone which is pretty marvellous, especially as it was free.
10. Death is great marketing tool for the music biz. As the deceased is in no position to record any new material, the corporations can issue any old tat and the faithful will lap it up and there's no kudos in the media criticising a dead person. In this way, a performers 'star' is elevated higher than it would be had they lived on.
11. Oh this thread has the potential for some real fireworks (pulls up chair and places tub of popcorn on lap).
12. No, I haven't tried that at all. However, given the pure and accurate reproduction (mine revealed a technique shortcoming in short order that I'd not heard before with other rigs) I think the results would be rather good.
13. You could try a Rob Allen http://youtu.be/ycN9x_5MqHQ Also check out Steve Swallow for use of an electric bass in a jazz setting.
14. I don't that often these days as I don't like the mega venues, or the ticket prices that accompany them (to be fair the price of admission to some medium sized venues is ridiculous too). However, my last gig was Thunder, at the Hammersmith. Great gig with a double edged sword in support: Tax the Heat - very good and Reef - bloody awful. Chris Childs was using a Ric 4003 through an Orange rig with a Thunder, sounded lovely.
15.
looks like I've gone and got myself an ACG fretless beauty...... I'll let you know when the deal is sealed!!!
Ooh, exciting times!
16. I'm back playing a four (albeit with a drop d tuner) after buying a Ric. I still play a five string fretless, but I do make the odd mistake when swapping between the two. I either need to practise more of get a four string fretless; best excuse for GAS ever
17.
In terms of what I'm gassing for now, it has made me sit up and take notice of real USA PRS guitars ( after a lifetime of Fender dedication ) and I've realised they're absolutely awesome, tho well beyond my price range.
I've owned two in the past (a McCarty and a Swamp Ash Special) and the build quality is peerless. The best sounding guitar I've ever played is a PRS McCarty Soapbar; simply stunning tone and playability.
18.
This. If it ain't broke, fling it from an upstairs window, that should do it.
19. Defo a US Sterling fiver.
20. £5 for a big old line up like that; bargain! Have a good one.
21. IIRC the Road Worn series came with US pickups. I had the P and fitted an additional P pickup, a Seymour Duncan, I couldn't tell any difference in the quality of tone from the two. So, as NancyJohnson says, if it ain't broke, why fix it?
22. You may be correct, with something this old and road worn it's hard to tell. But if it is a rare swamp ash body....BOOM! Price increase! Yours for £5k Nah, just kidding. I'll be satisfied with the current asking price. All I know is that it sounds huge and the neck is a joy to play. Having been using my 4003 for some time now, the P's neck feels really small by comparison, a very shallow C as opposed the Ric's chunky D shape.
23. There is quite a long section in GP's book that talks about the session. He is using an octaver and channeling Pino, especially in the outro.
24. Some better live shots for the gallery is all that I'd add to the above. Otherwise, looks fine to me.
