Great mix and a song you don't really hear that much, which is a good thing.

It’s more about my comfort than what folk think. The Mustang fits nicely because of the stretched body, whereas I find the ‘Ray a bit cramped, despite having much better upper fret access than the Mustang.

I really like the look of these, but I wonder if they might be a bit small for my frame (I have this issue with the shorty 'Ray). Pictures or video of the proud new owner sporting said acquisition would be much appreciated.

Any 5 string short scale tuned E-C would work, I would have thought. There is the dedicated E-C Fender Bass V, but that's vintage and expensive. Perhaps the Squier Bass VI could be an option, albeit with one more string.

That owes a lot to Bernard and Good Times in particular during the verse, which is a good thing. Programmed? I wouldn’t think so with the string and fret noise.

Weeks? Think back to when you first started playing, how long did it take to sound any where near decent? It can be disheartening to not nail a new technique after a shortish while but, if it’s totally new, then you need to be realistic and accept that it may take months to be just average. I’m lucky in that, coming from a guitar background, my pick chops were already ok, IMO. My fingerstyle, however, was another question, but that eventually developed as I became a better bass player, again IMO. Give it more time and, perhaps, just play pick style all the time and not revert to the more comfortable fingerstyle, until you’re at a level you find acceptable.

I’ve only been to Peach once before, many, many years ago. I can only assume that they’ve moved to bigger premises since then, as that place looks massive and I remember it being far more intimate and bijou.

Bloody awful! We were the penultimate band on a multi band line up for a charity gig. Just before we went on we were asked to cut our 1 hour set to 50 mins, not too onerous. We probably played no more that 35 mins of material and not all the strongest songs in the set. Sound on stage was awful (same backline for all the bands) and despite rehearsing well, cues were missed and it seems folk forgot how to count. 😤😡 I’ve done a charity gig previously, where the pick up band I was in was the penultimate act, exactly the same outcome. Never again.

I had it for a good while, pre covid. I tried all sorts, including a kind of shockwave/vibrating thingy (which helped a bit, I think). Best thing I found was using kinetic tape in the manner prescribed in videos (a T shape IIRC), once I started using that, it cleared right up.

Don't worry about that, it's an easy job for a competent solderer with the right tools.

I had one of those, it was my second bass. I ripped the frets out of it for my first fretless, it was alright.

I think you’re on to something about the ‘untrained’ ear of the audience here, but there’s also an additional way they might notice. If you’re comfortable with the strings that you’re using, you should be more relaxed and, by association, play better. I know that I feel more at home with my EB Cobalts and I hope that this shows when I perform.

Following a bout of P GAS and a brief tryout of same on a visit down south, I went P bass shopping, locally today but took my JMJ along to make sure that I wasn't buying just a bigger version of what I already had tonewise. To cut to the chase, the JMJ neck was better than the 3 Player series P necks that I played (1 x maple, 2 x Pau Ferro fretboard - the all maple neck was huge, not like the one I had previously tried) and the Seymour Duncan, JMJ pickup out 'precisioned' them all too, so I left P-less, but quietly smug. It's these instances that show what a fantastic piece of kit the JMJ, and the Mustang design as a whole, is.* *I must remember this post when the P GAS rises again, as it surely will.
