Hi Am looking at downsizing and at some point in the near future will have to look into practice amps and after suggestion. The thing is that whilst there are decent practice amps out there they are generally a little too big for my tiny studio flat so what I am after (if it exists) is a very small practice amp with decent-ish sound, I have seen a couple with 6.5" speaker but no idea if they are any good, although it will be for practice I still want a useable sound so that I enjoy practicing and so bass response is important, doesn't have to be low end dub monster but I would like as much bass response as I get from an Amplug , tried the Vox Pathfinder and the bass was non existent on that practice amp Thanks

They are great, great strings, im not usually a fan of Daddario strings but the Nyxl's are really good and they are very aggressive sounding for nickels, definitely as stated above a bit of a stainless steel vibe to them, sadly I stopped using them as they don't do them in short scale and although I am not totally against long scale strings cut down to size I do like to use a dedicated short scale set if possible.

His band is actually really good, not to everyone's taste but if you are after something a bit lofi, melancholy and strange then it certainly fits the bill

Chromes have barely any mids

I always thought that Nickels were meant to be more mid focused but I could be wrong, Rotosound are very good strings in terms of strong mids, both the ss and the nickels but the nickels are much less bright than the ss, GHS Boomers are said to have strong low mids though I have never used them myself so I cannot say from 1st hand experience, they are also said to be pretty dark sounding for rounds

Yes, I think you are onto something there, his bass playing is very low in the mix on their albums and as you say there is little in the way of exposed bass parts, for all the bass you can hear on their recent stuff he could be playing a bass uke

Having seen the Roswell pickups webpage they have some really interesting P and J pickups including Sandberg/Delano style with huge pole pieces (see below link), however a search on google on where to buy them pretty much comes up blank other than dv247 who seem to have loads of there guitar pickups but barely any of there bass pickups, anyone know where else supplies them? With the current covid situation I am half considering selling my combo, was tricky enough getting gigs in my area before the covid situation if you didn't play dad rock or cheese so I think it will be a long time before people start booking gigs around here.

Honestly I think Metallica should leave the mixing engineering etc to someone else instead of getting so involved, there involvement in the process gave us the bassless AJFA, the horrible drum sound on AJFA, the dreadfull boomy guitar tone on AJFA, the way too loud (and horrible sounding) drums on AJFA and that awful snare sound on St Anger, honestly they may be able to play but Metallica have not got a clue about what actually sounds good

True, I suspect his willingness to not rock the boat was as important to them as his abilities

I mean no disrespect to Trujillo , he has ability I can only dream of having and his right hand attach is deadly but although he is a great player he has always seemed like a hired gun in Metallica , to clarify what I mean he seems like the kind of player that could play circles round the others but decides not to rock the boat so as not to damage the other peoples ego's , again I mean no disrespect

Yeah I think with Newsted it was because he was creatively stifled in Metallica, a good example the song My friend of misery, Jason came in with the idea and wanted to have it as an instrumental solo piece and Hetfield basically said b*llo*ks to that and demanded to turn it into a song with lyrics,his moment to shine on the album after the fiasco of And justice for all where he was mixed out of the album and he was robbed of it, granted it came out ok but it would have been nice to have heard both versions on the album

Thats interesting, I have heard many people praise his playing especially the bass part for Caught in a mosh, also interesting is that when I listened to the youtube vid i posted I was struck by how similar to Frank Bello the tone is, not dead on but definitely a similarity there

I know, I know , Obvious but I was listening to this track but Flotsam and Jetsam with Newsted on the bass and ok the bass could be a touch louder (but still much more prominent than he was mixed through most of his career with Metallica) but the bass playing is fantastic, great playing and tone. His playing never sounded as good with Metallica which really makes me realise how much they were stifling him creatively, oddly he never seems to be mentioned in the same breath Frank Bello or David Ellefson but he is skilled, without a doubt [Youtube]

I would use all 4 neo magnets otherwise you are not really exploiying the extra strength of the neo magnets, only caution i would give is to make sure the neo magnets are the right way round, if they are you should feel them trying to pull themselves towards the polepieces, if you have them the wrong way round they will try and push away from the pole pieces, very important you put/glue/stick them on the right way round as forcing them the wrong way round can demagnetise the pickups pole pieces

I am having a custom set of steels made by them so this is encouraging to hear

Also worth stating I tried the wiring with just one pickup which was wired up to the solderless volume pot (disconnected the other volume pot) and it gave me a very bright tone on full volume and turned down it didnt cut the volume so much as act as if I had just turned down a tone control

When I switched to Rotosound steel strings they did feel really rough at first and my fingers felt like they were gonna fall off but after about a week I was used to them and they don't feel rough at all now

Thanks for the offer, sadly im not near there though for the price of a train ticket I may well consider it I seem to have hit a bit of an odd speedbump , I have wired up the bridge pickup and experiencing some very odd pickup interactions , hoping someone can help 1) Both volumes all the way off - I have volume from the bridge pickup even though the volume is rolled off 2) Bridge rolled off P pickup volume turned up - Very bright tone that sounds suspiciously like a soloed bridge pickup, tapping the polepieces of both pickups with a screwdriver gives a sound but the sound from tapping the bridge pickup with a screwdriver sounds louder both pickups on full sounds like I would expect it to sound, if I disconnect the bridge pickup the P pickup works absolutely fine, im baffled, any ideas?

Thanks, I now have a solderless output Jack so I will use new wires for that, with the pickup wires I will add some new wires to the existing and twist them together with the new wires and use electrical tape to secure the connections

Thanks for the replies One more possibly stupid question, many of the wires in the control panel are a little on the short side, in particular the wires from the output Jack to the volume, the bridge ground wire and the pickup wires for the bridge pickup. I have some white cloth covered wire, can I replace/lengthen the above wires with this wire or does it have to be a particular type of wire? I assume the colours on the original wiring are just there for ease of use and there is nothing unique about the wires used ? Thanks

Thanks for the replies, I am wiring with 2 volumes no tone control , I have seen diagrams were the ground wire that runs under the bridge is connected from the back of the tone pot (would be volume in my case) and diagrams were it is connected to the output jack, does it matter which one the bridge ground wire is attached to?
