  1. I am curious about this type of pickup, want to know what they are typically like in terms of tone, output, DC resistance etc. Have seen a Roswell Filtertron and is a nice price but I saw it is only wound to 4k dcr but I did notice it has 2 rows of pole pieces so I was thinking maybe it was wound to a low resistance for brightness and then the output was boosted with the 2 rows of pole pieces? If so it could be an interesting tone Anyone use a bass with Filtertrons?
  2. Thanks for the replies, I think I will go used, amp is not required right this moment but is something I will need in the next 2-3 months so hopefully this will give me time to put some decent moment away
  3. If I could keep within the sub £400 range that would be great, from that I have seen so far I am thinking maybe used might be the way to go
  4. About 6 months or so ago thinking that gigging would not be an option for a while I ended getting rid of my Fender rumble, 6 months or so later I am in 2 bands with one of them looking like we may be gigging soon. Money is tight at the moment so am after finding out what is relatively inexpensive and capable of doing small to medium size pub gigs, thank you
  5. Ok found the answer after a bit of googling: Strings are the same as they were before... They changed the formula they used to calculate tension and it changed the numbers slightly. String formula had not changed.
  6. Hi Wanting to give Prosteels a 2nd chance now that I have a bass that has a pretty mid heavy pickup I got a set a couple weeks ago. Before I got them I looked up the tension information and got the 105-45 set as I wanted to go a smidge lighter tension than the Rotos I had on and these seemed to be very, very slightly lighter, looking them up online I found that they would be around 170ibs ish tension wise anyway the strings arrived and looking at the info on the back they are a good 10ibs lighter than stated by Daddario online so just wondered if anyone would know why, just want to know for the next time I order these, thanks
  7. That is true but it is a lot further forward with comparison to my other short and medium scale basses, would be interested to find out with scale length accounted for how it compares in terms of placement to a long scale jazz but tbh im too lazy to do the maths
  8. I think the bridge pickup on my Ibanez Mezzo bass might be in 60s spacing, granted it's a pj not a jazz bass but still thought it was interesting
  9. If you don't like Disintegration then the Cure is not for you, by far their best album
  10. I agree with this, I'm sure to my bandmates I could turn up with my P bass or I could turn up with my Hofner or I could turn up with a bass uke and as long as my band mates can hear the bass they don't care and probably don't hear the difference, to them it just sounds like a bass but to me I sound better when I use a certain bass and my sounding better makes me enjoy playing more
  11. I have a series/parallel switch (which is what the S1 is) on a P bass and imo the secret is to use it with a hot pickup, I use it with a Duncan SPB-2 which has a DC resistance of 22k and the parallel option actually sounds pretty good
  12. For absolutely ages I intensely disliked Prosteels for there mid scoop, just recently thought I would give them another shot as I have a bass that is very mid heavy and despite my past impressions they sound pretty good on that bass. There nickel strings are just decent, nothing wrong with them but just ok rather than great In short they make decent strings but they all (apart from the Nyxl line) have a bit of a scoop in the mids so they may not be great on a mid shy bass but on a bass with lots of mids they may be a great match
  13. Hi all My modest collection of basses consists of short and medium scale basses, I have always used long scale strings and cut them down as although the selection of medium scale strings is better than it has been in the past it is still somewhat lacking and often in really funky gauges (Rotosound medium scale for example is 90,75,50,40), I know a lot of people will be thinking "just but the right scale strings" but I can never find the right scale strings in the gauges and the brand that I like I have never encountered any issues using long scale strings but I know that theoretically it is not good to have the speaking length of the string wrapped around the tuner and it probably doesn't help the lifespan of the string. I have a couple of strap pins in my toolbox and was thinking of sliding one or two of these onto the string so that the taper of the string is the only part of the string wrapped around the tuning post. My only reservation in doing this is that I don't know if it might be bad for the bass since the tension that was held at the ball end will now be transferred to a larger area due to the strap pin (physics is not my strong point) , is this a bad idea?
  14. The trick is to put them in a container full of boiling water to soak for 10 mins or so, NO boiling on the stove, tried that before and the strings didn't really sound much better and died very quickly afterwards, I soak them in a (clean) icecream tub full of boiling water and they sound much better afterwards.
  15. Lol, 2 votes for the gold, it has grown on me to be honest, the gold spray painted one I have at the moment looks good but I think I will have one custom made now that I know it looks good That being said I really like the colour of this pickguard
  16. Honestly if I am using rounds and they are not a special coated type or an alloy 52 type or any other type that is known to be long lasting I change them once a month. I know some people would think that is excessive but the way I see it is £20 a month is not a huge amount of money and especially not for the amount of enjoyment I get from playing, I love that aggressive grindy tone you get from a new or newish set of strings Flats on the other hand, the older the better.
  17. Is a weird technique but a much better video than most pickup comparisons, helped me choose the SPB-2
  18. Yeah but does it have the lyric "devil daddy's gonna spank you over and over again" ?
  19. This was in my Youtube suggested videos the other day, from the image on the link it looked awful..... I really had no comprehension how hilariously bad it was , apparently it is the ex drummer of Five finger death punch who left to start this band😂 Psychosexual - Let the sin begin [Youtube}
  20. Have been thinking and as my favourite tone seems to be P pickup soloed with the tone rolled off about half way on an already pretty dark P pickup (SPB-2) my ideal would be a bridge position mudbucker However the string spacing on that type of pickup seems to be way to narrow to work effectively in that position which has got me thinking maybe I should stick with a J bridge pickup but get a custom one wound to be super hot, like 25k resistance, that would certainly be an interesting tone
  21. Thanks, still can decide, I think the only sensible thing to do is get another Mezzo bass and slap a black pickguard on it lol
  22. And not to hijack the thread but now having 1 spare pickguard I did what any self respecting basschatter with a Halfords 5 minutes walk away and got some spray paint for my spare pickguard so now I have a gold one as well, not sure which one I prefer
  23. I have heard people say before that going lighter on strings you lose tone and wanted to share something interesting that I have found and that is the correlation between string stiffness and tone. Longtime Rotosound user but have dabbled with Fender strings, Daddario etc but always come back to Rotos, one thing I have found that has ime been consistent across brands is that lighter gauge E strings have a better, clearer and better balanced tone. To elaborate further I find that with a heavier E string because the string is stiffer it thumps more, the overtones become muted by the initial attack of the note and by the slightly lessened sustain of the heavier string, the effect is subtle but imo it is definitely there and on a brand new set of strings it is even more pronounced due to the brightness of the strings, on flatwounds this is probably desirable but not so much on rounds where you are generally aiming for clarity of tone, I tend to go one gauge lighter on my E string (100-85-65-45) Anyone else found the same thing?
  24. Honestly I have no idea why anyone is even questioning whether he played on the track, if you have every heard him playing live you will know that he is a very capable musician and has been for a long time
