  1. I can confirm this, I tried the Hofner contemporary flats and the E string had no pitch definition at all, sounded like a bass drum then as I took the strings off I felt the windings slip away from the core. The Labella Beatle bass flats are good though, TI's are good also but they may or may not fit through the tuners depending on how big the holes are on your tuning pegs (my tuners are aftermarket parts so I don't know if they fit the standard tuners). Also worth noting is that lowish tension/light gauge strings tend to work best due to the skinny Hofner necks
  2. Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that, I hope you are feeling better soon, all the best
  3. Have you fitted the Emg's ? If so how did it go?
  4. Hi Am considering giving these a try, been a while since I used these so can't remember to much about them, I am currently using Swingbass 105-45 gauge and considering these in 100-40 gauge which is roughly in the same ballpark tension wise but obviously tension and stiffness are two different things, how do these compare to Swingbass in terms of how stiff they feel? Thanks
  5. Definitely not Pro steels I can tell you that, put those strings on a dark sounding bass and say goodbye to being able to hear yourself
  6. Unfortunately this is true, definitely best to try and find your own tone and style and to find the instrument, strings and ano that best facilitates and encourages this
  7. I mean that there is fret buzz when I play the first fret of the E string, open E is fine
  8. Thanks, I checked the first fret and the action at the first fret is around .55mm so I don't think it's the nut that is the issue so it must be either neck relief or a high or low fret
  9. Thanks for the replies, I actually ended up getting a Behringer ADI21 with the gift card as it is known to be pretty good on bass and had parametric mids , still it is good to know that Amazon is a viable option
  10. Hi Hoping someone can help with this, I figured I would ask before I loosen the truss rod due to my assumption that more relief is needed. I have a bass that has some fret buzz on the 1st fret of the E string. It had a touch of buzz on the first couple frets on the other strings (barely audible unless digging in)but it was small enough that raising the action a little got rid of it however there is a bit of buzz on the first fret of the E string, it is not a straight sitar like buzz like you get if you have a bass with bad fretwork but sounds more like the note is being choked by the string bouncing against the fret due to the string excursion It sounds like not enough neck relief but I could well be wrong and one of the things that makes me think i may well be wrong is that I am using Rotosound swing bass 105-45 which are not exactly known for being low tension. With the above in mind I think it must be one of *Nut cut too low *High(or low) fret *Not enough neck relief What do you think?
  11. Hi all. I have a gift card for Amazon and naturally I would like to get some new strings with it however I have heard reports of fakes on Amazon. Was wondering how common this us, if a product is shown as despatched by Amazon (rather than a seller on Amazon) is this any guarantee of getting genuine goods and is there any sellers on Amazon that people have had good luck with ? Thanks
  12. What is the difference between these other than the USA ones costing much more ? Hipshot licensed ultralites Hipshot USA ultralites
  13. Yeah that is what is putting me off, ive read some people saying they had to sand a little to get a J pickup to fit but as you say no pickguard around the bridge pickup to hide any bodged attempts
  14. Let us know how it goes, I was tempted to go active with the pickups but I have heard the j pickup is a slightly different size to most j pickups so I was thinking of maybe just replacing the p pickup, if I can find an active set that fits then I may just swap out both pickups
  15. I really like the bass tone in this song (skip to around 30second mark to hear the bass better) what kind of pickups would get me this kind of tone? I am guessing Model P, obviously I know there is a little bit of overdrive on this song also [YouTube]
  16. Thanks, have loosened the truss rod a little and the buzz is still there a little bit but has lessened, I'm guessing they must come from the factory with the truss rod tightened quite a bit
  17. Yeah, I have a Duncan Quarter pounder in my Squier so I'm contemplating taking that out of the Squier and putting into the Ibanez and putting the money i have saved doing so into a preamp
  18. Ok thanks, I will have to look up that thread Yes I tend to either run mine flat or with bass and treble rolled off slightly, the scoop explains why the treble sounds harsh boosted
  19. Hi I have a lovely Ibanez Mezzo bass, as some on this forum will have read on another post it arrived with some tarnished frets and I was thinking of sending it back but it seemed daft to return a bass that I liked for something that I could fix for the price of some metal polish so polished up the frets and happy with the bass. That being said the one thing that niggles me a little is that the onboard treble eq on the bass gets noisy with more than a moderate boost, by noisy I don't mean hiss so much as the frequencies it seems to be boosting seem to be the ones that correlate with string noise, fret buzz etc, as I am a treble cranked to 11 kind of person it is something that I would like to fix. This leads me to 2 options a) a darker voiced pickup so that boosting the treble gives a boost in the treble but with those highest frequencies rolled off by the pickup by its design, for example a Duncan SPB-2 is not completely without treble but the overwound design means that those highest frequencies that tend to get harsh are greatly reduced, the voicing of such a pickup could also be very useful in that because that pickup is so midrange heavy I could crank both the bass and the treble on the active eq and get a pretty balanced tone b) a different preamp, I have zero experience with replacing preamps so I am a complete noob in this world Thoughts? thanks
  20. There is a mod that is popular with people who own the Squier as jaguar bass, the stock j pickup is weak and people have boosted the output by putting neodymium magnets on top of the pole pieces rather than underneath them so perhaps you need to do the same
  21. Thanks for the replies I have used some T-Cut today and that seems to have done the trick, one more question, bit of buzz on the lower frets(frets 1-3), not bad but enough that I wouldn't want to lower the action lower than it is at the moment, loosen the truss rod slightly?
  22. Thanks I thought it should be ok after all bass strings are surely more abrasive on the frets, is an Ibanez mezzo bass so I would be doubtful that the frets are any kind of gold , I will have to get some Autosol
  23. As per the thread title I have some tarnished frets on a bass, the frets are naturally a kind of slight brass colour (they have a very slight yellowish brass hue to them) , have polished one of the frets with some silver polish (just the one to test it) and the fret I have polished has gone from a slight brass colour to a silvery colour , should I be worried? I am guessing not since during a fret dressing abrasive material would also be used ?
  24. Oh man another bass with issues😡 .  Frets are tarnished, I gave them a vigorous wiping with a damp cloth to see if it would come off and no joy, I am reluctant to order the 1200 grit and start working on the frets on a new bass in case I bodge it

Thanks, I have some silver polish I'm going to give a try, I figure with how soft silver is it should be fine for polishing up some frets, fingers crossed that it works

Ok so I have tried the polish on 1 of the frets as a test and it has removed the tarnish but the fret that I have polished is a silvery colour whilst the other frets seem to be naturally a kind of slight brass colour, is this something I should be worried about?  I am guessing not since abrasives would be used during a fret dressing that would have a similar effect ?

      You needn't worry.

The polished colour of frets tends to be lighter than when tarnish has darkened them.  They will gradually return to the darker colour as the polished surface oxidises.
