  1. Have just taken my Mezzo to have a Seymour Duncan SPB-2 Hot pickup fitted,I find the stock pickup a bit limp sounding and a bit scooped in the mids so am looking forward to having a hefty dose of low mids although I anticipate the bridge pickup will be much quieter than the P pickup after the swap, with the stock preamp being pretty hot it should be pretty loud.
  2. I would say this is generally true but there are some exceptions, the Seymour Duncan Spb-1 is scooped in the mids and there tone chart (B5 M4 T5)
  3. They will be fine, don't be worried about wrapping them round the post
  4. They were great strings, shame they discontinued them
  5. Someone on another bass forum sold a set of the Ibanez Dynamix p/j pickups which is what is used on the Talman, Mikro and Mezzo basses and he measured the DC resistance and they measured around 6.5k for the P pickup and just under 5k for the J pickup so they are underwound compared to pretty much every p/j set out there which may be why they sound tinny, I am swapping out the pickups on my Mezzo when I get the chance as they are not the fullest sounding pickups
  6. Funny to hear all the love for Prosteels, I tried them and couldn't get them off fast enough, I love Roto steels though
  7. you would have to be insane to pay that, they regularly go for £800-900 but really in terms of quality they are a £250 instrument at best
  8. I had a 79 musicmaster and it was dreadful, weighed a tonne, sounded awful with a tone control that was pretty much just there for decorative purposes and that dreadful bridge that these basses have, it makes me laugh when I see these going for £800-900 on Ebay
  9. The newer ones are likely to be better than the old ones as the old ones were released as Fenders inexpensive 'student' bass
  10. How is the difference in tone? I'm finding my Mezzo a little brittle in the high end and am considering putting a darker mud heavy P pickup in it like an SPB-2 so that the treble boost/cut is actually useful
  11. Yep, I've always gone by the rule of if it is bugging me enough to mention it then it will probably always bug me and I should probably return it
  12. Yeah Newtones are good strings, the only downside is the 2 week wait, I tried Prosteels once instead of waiting and they were dreadful
  13. I can't be much help on this other than to say that Jack Bruce and Andy Fraser pretty much used the bridge pickup on theirs exclusively so have a listen to Cream and Free and that will give you some idea of the bridge pickup tone, the neck pickup will be pretty much all boom all of the time unless you roll off some low end
  14. Yeah I can understand that, at least with a Fender truss rod you know that you loosen it is the buzz is on the first few frets and tighten if it is in the last few frets, nice and simple
  15. I love the tone of new strings(at least with roundwounds) so the brightness was not an issue, it was more the massive mid scoop, it's like half the tone spectrum is missing with prosteels
  16. Ironically you just reminded me to take off the set of prosteels I have on one of my basses lol, I thought maybe they were not matched well with the bass so moved them to another bass and they sound just as bass, there nickel strings are ok but prosteels are dreadful (imho)
  17. Yeah they are good pickups, the SPB-2 Hot is good as well, a different approach to a rock tone
  18. Yeah it sounds like either a twisted string or a dodgy string, happens with all string brands, you get a dodgy one every once in a while, ask the place you brought from to replace it (if it is that and is not twisted) and if they don't help then email Rotosound. Oh, and don't believe the crap about them causing neck issues, bunch of nonsense, if your bass neck can withstand Daddario or Ernie Ball strings it will have no problem with Rotos
  19. I've never used them but from what I have heard others say it may be worth trying the Dimarzio split p wired in parallel, it's a hot pickup with a mid scoop and lots of bass but apparently wiring it in parallel makes it less low end heavy
  20. I think it is only the more expensive Hofner flats, I think the contemporary flats are Chinese made
  21. Yeah it may be that I was unlucky, with the Hofner contemporary flats, they are very inexpensive for flats so it may be that the quality control is a bit hit and miss, if they are working well for you then no need to change them
  22. I can confirm this, I tried the Hofner contemporary flats and the E string had no pitch definition at all, sounded like a bass drum then as I took the strings off I felt the windings slip away from the core. The Labella Beatle bass flats are good though, TI's are good also but they may or may not fit through the tuners depending on how big the holes are on your tuning pegs (my tuners are aftermarket parts so I don't know if they fit the standard tuners). Also worth noting is that lowish tension/light gauge strings tend to work best due to the skinny Hofner necks
  23. Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that, I hope you are feeling better soon, all the best
  24. Have you fitted the Emg's ? If so how did it go?
  25. Hi Am considering giving these a try, been a while since I used these so can't remember to much about them, I am currently using Swingbass 105-45 gauge and considering these in 100-40 gauge which is roughly in the same ballpark tension wise but obviously tension and stiffness are two different things, how do these compare to Swingbass in terms of how stiff they feel? Thanks
