1. Hi, Well, I've been offered a new bass, and I'm thinking of putting this up for sale. This is a completely original (to the solder joint) 1966 Fender Jazz bass in candy apple red. This is the rarest custom colour and even in this time of frugality, these are still in demand. It has the original covers, bridge, pickups etc. and is ready for a full nut and bolt investigation of its condition. Bring a screwdriver! The pickups are dated, neckplate is fine, neck date is clear, finish is very 'aged' (let's say batterred), the bridge is original, umm, pickguard, oval tuners, I know what I'm talking about, it's a good un. It took e over 50 vintage Fenders (ok I was a dealer) to find it. For those in the know, the finish has the silver glitter finish underneath the red finish, which makes it definitely dated to 66' and is the rarer type (Fender fans, it was gold to create the sparkle from 67 onwards). Umm, it has pearl inlays, and with the neck date is from December of 66'. Asking price, well, it's going to be around £4,000 Serious PMs etc, let me know. A camera will be forthcoming Sunday (I lost mine on a roadtrip) so pics will go up then. This is a serious sale, and I'm incredibly sad to see it go. Cheers.
2.
I think you maybe better read the thread...it was sold months ago Maybe...and i know this is a lot to ask...but maybe the OP could get off his arse and change the heading to sold? Cos if he doesn't this thread could be around for eternity.
If you'd have checked, I've actually nt logged in for the best part of a week as I've been in Germany and am only now able to edit it. Some of us don't spend all of our time on the internet................ Have amended the title now and let this be the end of it.
3. You sure? Actually, I remember it now it was to a kid from Glastonbury who came and picked it up at Bristol Bus Station. I remember! Paid £300 for it, and I had a horrid hangover. Ahhh! Memories (not good whn you lose them...)
4. This has jarred me somewhat as I have no recollection of selling this, which is a surprise, as I usually remember all of my sales! Ahh well, I guess I should lay off the booze.
5. Allianz were very good to me in my freuqent trips accross the continet. They insured my jazz basses up to a combined value of just shy of £9,000 for about £170 quid included cover from cars/vans etc.
6. God I hate bass solos. Absolutely hate them. Like this post.
7. Oh, and MSN Messenger is great. Whenever I get into a pickle or need some help, I'll MSN a mate or two, have a chat about some bass stuff and they will often inspire me! In fact, I'm going to start a thread about that now...!
8. I'd say not to put any pressure on yourself. I went through years of playing for an hour or so every day, the whole music reading, Bach stuff. Now, I don't even have an amp at home most of the time, and can go weeks without even taking the bass out of the case. Play for fun, when you have inspiration, when you want. This way, it will come to you. Set yourself realistic goals, a scale a week, or a new song a week for instance. Go to music shops and chat with people in there, get yourself a good book about bass and tray and listen to the music you like. Get lessons with a mate, or invite a guitar player round. I used to teach my best mate a few chords on the guitar, and we would just jam along and create tracks and stuff. All good ways to get you into playing without the pressure of it being too formalised. Just have fun, if it's not fun then it's a WASTE OF TIME.
9. I own a bass played by John Entwistle at a few gigs, got the pics as well. Although, the neck was really bowed so I sold it. Get this, I sold a 1965 Fender Jazz Bass neck played by John Entwistle for £150. Great days! Had a few other Celeb bits, but this is the best, and worst really.
10. Just to say I've been PM'ing about this since this morning. Tchuss!
11.
Yeah, I don't think he was ever truely down and out. I think he did sleep in a "spike" in England and work as a dishwasher in Paris due to changing circustances, though. Coincidently, Down and Out in Paris and London is my favourite book of all time
Awesome book, the guy was a phenomenal writer, absolutely outstanding. Homage to Catalunya is wonderful too.
12.
Geroge Orwell lived rough for some time before he wrote 1984 and Animal Farm.
That's true, but it was research for his book called 'Down and out in London and Paris'. He was a very well off man, and never struggled for money. As for this discussion I'm going to substitute my minor 5th of interest for a major 7th of drinking and see you later.
13. For me, music is about sex. All the best music is in some way related to sex, and jazz is (apart from a few notable exceptions - Kind of Blue etc) the most UN-sexy music in the world. It's a headache inducing racket that would have you humping like a 16 year old, with ADHD having an epileptic fit. It's all over the place. I love indulgent music, but not the "nudge nudge, wink wink did you see how I referenced a Charlie Parker solo there mate" type of improvisation. That sucks. It's all the over intellectualised notion of the jazz player as a 'thinker' that gets me. Jazz is a very simple form of music, that has bolt ons to make it appear more difficult. Take a standard 12 bar blues, chuck in a few substitutions, you got jazz baby. Modal jazz, well, don't even progress, just bash around on a mode. You can teach someone to play a 12 bar walking line in a few minutes that would, with some improvisation, see them through your most general of jazz forms. You can then heap on the rest of the theory stuff, but if you think that a heroin addicted Charlie Parker was planning all those substitutions, or a drunk Django was playing freely whilst calculating the changes you're a fool!
14. Well, I'm very much aware of the subtleties of jazz but I just don't like it. The only way to understand jazz is to learn the forms, easiest way is to listen to the tracks with the fake book (as you would do with a classical score for example). I find lot of jazz unlistenable, and I find it tiresome. The whole intellectualisation of jazz is the 20th Centuries legitimisation of 'our' music (blues to jazz to rock and roll and beyond), and is really America's most cerebral export.
15. Teaching is a big responsibility, and I think if you take that attitude, you'll be ok. £25 an hour is a lot of money, so I always used to try and put £25 worth of effort in :-) After a while you acquire a set of materials you can use, and get to know how to approach lessons. I used to teach 1-1 and a GNVQ course in bass guitar, and to be honest, I don't think I am the right person to be teaching, it's an aptitude you either have or don't. You'll figure it out after a while. The idea of a course book s a good one, lessons should challenge, and a bass teacher should know better than most, so mix it up! Funk, rock, jazz, reggae. People need to constantly be challenged. A laptop is an amazing resource too, no need to drag around loads of CDs, you can write your own music in Sibelius, you can trawl for resources and you can ask questions to us on Basschat! Good luck
16. Whoever has it I hope we don't see it for sale shortly...
17. Crikey! Like I said, that's fine! I'm not accusing you of any duplicity, good luck with the sale my friend. If all were as honest as you, we'd have a reasonably priced second hand bass market ;-) Cheers.
18. No harm done, it's gone now, cannae be bitter about it :-0)
19. I guess someone may have offerred above the asking price or whatever. Ahh well, nothing I can do now, it appears it has gone!
20. Hi, err, who was that to? I thought I was the first to PM you, I guess not. Must have been quick off the draw! That's a real shame :-(
21. Hi, I hate Freecycle (I want a 38 inch plasma screen with a remote for nothing please!), but thought I'd see if anyone on here was interested in a few bits of furniture. I have: Ikea computer desk - basically new. Large table with 4 chairs. Great condition Err, based in central bristol, has to go by Sunday. You want em? Can probably email pics but I'm a lazy sh*t, so might be in a day or two.
22. Yeah, I sent a PM yesterday at about 2. Hopefully will hear something today! Can't wait to get a Wal again!
23. If it's for sale at £1260 I'll have it. I could do with a new bass for some gigs and sold my last Wal some time ago. Let I knows via PM.
