1. Yours has got quite different pickups from mine, which are much sknnier. And I don't think that's because they're longer. You've also got fewer laminated bits in the neck than me. (Perhaps not surprising). How does it compare to your Vintage V1004?
2. It's got a high F. I really don't feel that I'd personally want a string lower than a B, but maybe if I ever encounter an instrument with such a string I might change my mind. If I remember correctly, this is the first bass I've played with a string (only the high F) which isn't wound. This bass does seem to have quite a nice acoustic sound. But that may be due to the zombie killing neck on it. I've found a few more finish problems, but think that some of them will probably buff out if polished. Going back and forth between the 7 string and a 4 string (Cimar) really makes me think that they're complementary instruments.
3. After being in delivery hyperspace for almost a week, it finally arrived today. EDIT: Strange, the picture of the front seems to have stopped working. I'll try again. Direct link: http://i58.tinypic.com/17ff3q.jpg It's a very interesting instrument. It seems to be made well, but there are some flaws in the finish, and some scratches on the plastic bit that covers the electronics cavity. I've been playing it today, and enjoying it greatly. Playability is about what you'd expect for the price, and sound similar for an active bass in this price range. The real bonus is 7 strings. This is, in my opinion, a very big advantage over a six string bass. I can play three octaves of major scale without moving my hand much. Clearly I can play bass parts on the normal 'bass' strings, but I can play chords by a number of techniques (block chords, strummed chords, fingerpicking styles) on the higher strings, and there's further to go when playing solos. (Not that I play solos well, but I wish to improve). It doesn't feel any more difficult to play than my Shine six string bass, except that I've noted that it's a bit more of a reach to get to the lowest frets on the B string, and playing hammer on fills low down on the B string is a bit more tricky. The ebonol fretboard is nice. It isn't as smooth and glossy as that on the Squier Vintage Modified Fretless bass, but it's a nice material. Certainly I prefer it to Rosewood. The push/pull 'passive' mode disables the EQ, which will mean that I can use outboard 'stuff' in tone-shaping. The three band EQ is a big step up from two band EQ. There are certainly a lot os founds available from it. It's not the best sounding bass I have. I'd say that both my Cimar Rickenfaker and my Ibanez SR760 have a 'native' sound that's better, but the HZ-7000 is there or thereabouts. It's been reported on SevenString.org that changing the strings to Warwick Red Label strings considerably improved the sound. That's subjective, but it suggests that experimenting with strings may improve the sound.
4. Congratulations! Good to hear it arrived after being in delivery hyperspace for almost a week. More photos?
5. Is the cheaper one MIJ?
6. 99p!!!! I'd like to hear what the seller's expression is when you give them the 99p!
7. Well done Binky!
8. I hope this went well, as I've seen too many small outdoor gigs where the sound quality was awful.
9. We call the UK version of this tree 'Lime'. The big tree, not the citrus one. One of the most common trees around. I've heard some very nice sounds out of basses and guitars with basswood bodies. It is soft and can dent, but despite it being cheap I'm not convinced that it's in any way a second rate tonewood. Not visually impressive though. Put a fancy veneer on it and you're ready to go. Edit: Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass has a basswod body. And it ain't cheap.
10.
These days, I've a Waterstone 12 string bass that I got from the classifieds on here.
Pics?
All being well, there is a full aluminium EGC bass being delivered to me in the next few weeks too.
Pics?
11. I play for fun, but I prefer improvising and making up amateurish original music to playing along to or learning existing music.
12. Congratulations. There seems to be plenty of Peavey love breaking out all over the forum
13.
The 'Drummer at the Wrong Gig' video usually runs in tandem on Basschat with 'Cross-dressing Japanese Bass Player' (though I think he or she may be Korean):
I haven't seen the cross-dressing Japanese bass player for about five years or more. Oh dear, I don't think she's ageing well.
14. This is odd, as I've never heard of anyone having customer services with Thomann. I've done a bit of a google, and it seems that Thomann are still getting good reviews for customer service. E.g. see this thread: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/217261-thomann-odd-position-on-a-returned-item/ I wonder if your experience would have been better had you phoned them once things started looking strange (damage reports etc.) and reminded them of their responsibility to get the item to you in good condition.
15. Anyone playing in Leicester soon? Not Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday.
16. Personally through reading the reviews and discussions, I would think that the Harley Benton 1975 Jazz basses slightly win the race of cheap but good jazz basses. I note that fewer of them have been returned. Unless someone really wants the solid colours of the J&D basses.
17.
The quality is much better than standard Epiphone quality control as the bass is produced by the Epiphone custom shop. We've had a load of these basses through my local shop and I'm always tempted. Awesome bass for the money!
I don't think there is an 'Epiphone Custom Shop'. There are some MIA Epiphones, and they may still have MIJ Elitist models. But, as far as I'm aware, the 'custom shop' label is applied to instruments made in their regular factories, just limited model runs. I think the Allen Woody basses were originally made in Korea, but that more recently made ones are made in China. Edit: No more MIJ Epiphones it seems. Discontinued in 2008. The Elitist Casino appears to be made in the Unsung (Peerless) factory in Korea.
18.
He can play though, for someone who 'can't play bass….'
Maybe the guy in the video is Jaco Pastorius, except that the ebay seller has sandpapered all the distinguishing features off his face and body.
19. I was gobsmacked by the prototype bass that they sold for £200. If I had seen it sooner, and if I hadn't just bought another bass, I would have had that. (I'm sure many others would have had it if they had seen it).
20.
Ask him if the headstock has been refinished...that'll catch him out.......!
We could give him a taste of his own medicine by sending him long rambling questions that don't really mean anything.
21. The Korala has a very fancy top. It's said to have a 'okume' body which has been 'flamed'? What does it mean by that? Photoflame? For those who have received one, happy new bass uke day! Any more sound clips?
22. The electrickery link does mention pickup coils having a natural resonance due to the number of coils around the magnet. There's not so much mention of the positioning of the pickups though. I wonder if there are any youtube videos demonstrating how tone changes when the pickup is moved to different positions. Does the strength of the magnets make much difference? If it's just resonances of the coils, then you'd think that EQ could change the sound of one pickup into another. What contributes to the very different note definition that different pickups have?
23. What strings would people use to set the relief on a six string bass? 1&2 and 5&6, or just 1 & 6? Or, would people look at the inner strings as well?
24. Some pickups sound punchy and produce good note definition. Some others sound produce indistinct mud. What is the difference between passive pickups (or wiring) that make pickups of similar design (or at least form) sound so different?
25.
Yes. It's lovely. I think that generally people are very traditional in what they buy nowadays and go for a corporate name. I'm sure that a lot of guitars and basses made in the 60s and 70s wouldn't be made today. There aren't many risks taken when designing mainstream items anymore. Look at buildings and cars of the 60s that wouldn't get beyond the design stage today. I know that you and I and a good few others like a quirky or unusual bass but we are in the minority which is good for us but also a pity.
I think your Siggery looks beautiful. I have't played one, so can't comment on the playability from a personal viewpoint. However, I googled and basschat/searched a bit and everyone seems to love them. Visually, I also really like the Lodestone basses I even like the headstock, though some others don't. If I had a choice between this and a standard looking Fender and they both played and sounded the same, I'd definitely go for the Lodestone, even if it was one of the solid colour ones. The same for the Siggery, lovely red finish and flame maple on yours. Usually I don't like flame maple jazzes, but the look really works on yours. Returning to topic, Peaveys seem to be underrated. But there are other brands, perhaps LTD, which seem to be even more underrated. Some of the Yamahas are brilliant, but go for utterly ridiculous prices second hand. I've played a Yammie RBX375 that I thought was brilliant. I've seen them sell for £80. Though, while I'm not insisting on standard Fender basses (I don't own any), I must admit that I really enjoyed playing every USA Fender I've tried. I've been less impressed by others with most Mexican Fenders and even the Squier Classic Vibe and Vintage modified (barring a VM fretless that was brilliant) that I've tried.
