Stock Clearance Sale - The Guitar Workshop, Ibstock
Annoying Twit replied to Norris's topic in General Discussion
The Guitar Workshop is your local shop? Do you live in Ibstock? There seems to be a fair bass presence there, with several frequent ebay sellers of basses there. -

As this has fret markers, I presume that ithis Westone Thunder 1 is a defret. If that's the case, surely this won't sell for that much. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Westone-Thunder-1-Fretless-Bass-/231351246027?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item35dd9bdccb -
These do seem to be making the rounds. People rave about them being good for not much money, but they demonstrably do not seem to be 'keepers'.

Sold for £100 but then quickly relisted? Relist was at most 2 hours 48 minutes after the previous auction finished. This time it has a reserve and a £220 BIN. Something isn't right.

You bought it?

Yet another Basschatter! It seems that a fair proportion of the interesting instruments on ebay are being sold by BC regulars. That Sandberg looks really nice, and I'm guessing will exceed the quality of an Ibanez BTB7. Seeing this listing prompted me to pick up and play my own 7 string, and I must admit while there are much better 7 strings, I don't feel unsatisfied with what I have.

I'm tempted, but my bass buying budget has only just returned to £0 after previous purchases. I'm also not sure about the short scale thing. EDIT: Gone already. Looks like a great bargain for someone.

Amazing guitarist composer, Dave Marks on bass?
Before looking, is it Jack Thammarat?
Yep! I looked at some of the other finalists. He is head and shoulders above the others IMHO. This may be a generational thing though. -
Presumably this is the same attitude that prevails when voting commences for the monthly Basschat Composition Challenge.
I vote in the Basschat Composition Challenge! Bass playing under a guitar solo
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in General Discussion
I've checked out more of Dave LaRue's stuff, and been impressed. His solo album is perhaps a bit too 80s in places, but there are some very nice pieces. The following is for a solo perhaps a little bit 'accompaniment' like, but I like it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiONXXHvTS0 -

Prosebass fretless short scale for £250. I don't know how much these go for, but it seems cheap for a UK hand made bass with a known maker. Someone was selling one of these on BC for £350, so this *might* be a good deal. Very interesting blogging on bass designing and making here: http://funnbass.wordpress.com/
Lots of these sorts of things appearing recently, a Takeharu : http://www.ebay.co.u...l-/121451703258
It's the same one coming up over and over again isn't it? It doesn't seem to be worth as much as the seller thinks it is. This Fresher is also, I predict, overpriced. There is a 'Make Offer' button however. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1970s-Fresher-Violin-Bass-Guitar-Japan-Beatles-Bass-Teisco-/251666415481?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3a987cbf79 -
This is a very interesting looking bass. I must admit I don't like what the musician is doing with it, but I'd like to know what bass it is. https://www.youtube....h?v=1BgNhR9oisM Edit: Warr Guitar?

I've just remembered that I had an interesting brief email exchange with Tony Visconti. However, it was about his production work, not his bass playing.

Bass playing under a guitar solo
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in General Discussion
Checking photos, that's definitely Dave La Rue. I found another photo of him with the same (or identical) bass and Joe Satriani when Satriani still had hair It's a 10 minute track, so it needs variation, and for the bass to subtly develop throughout. But the balancing act is to support the lead, not detract from it. La Rue, in my humble opinion, nails it. -
I once helped Alan Gregg of The Muttonbirds load his bass cab into his van. He and I were joking about it. Nice guy. Maybe not a 'name' over here in the UK, but he is in New Zealand.
-
I also really enjoyed this. Do you have a youtube video or similar showing how you performed this piece, or one like it?
-
I've just heard Joe Satriani playing a guitar solo. While there's nothing being played outside the box, I was quite impressed by the bass playing on this track. In my opinion, and I'd be happy to hear other/contrary opinions, the bass player on this does a very good job at providing a solid backing to Satriani's solo, while still putting enough variation, fills, and interest into the bassline to make it interesting in itself (particularly near the end of the track) without distracting from the lead guitar which is of course the focus of a Satriani track. IMHO the mellow bass tone does help with this, which is not going to be an accident. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo6LXD7uzn4 Any opinions on this?

Weird handmade project bass type thingy
Annoying Twit replied to itsmedunc's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
That's been on ebay before. I'm not sure if it's the same seller having failed to sell it before, or whether someone bought it and is now trying to get rid of it. WIth a starting price of £10, it's clear that they want rid of it. -
Good luck on the hunt for more Peaveys.
