morning folks, great debate this has turned into!! I think music from all is great! People are still learning, perfecting, writing and performing while still getting involved in petty; my musics better than yours, kids these days, it was never like this in my day, etc...etc.. I really think it is fantastic! Music still has the passion and power to generate such trivial matters producing balanced and unbalanced views from players and performers of all walks. Yes technology has made things easier and the craft is no longer elitist nor time served - unfortunate but true! But the benefits are there in terms of studio availability and in home use for the self sustaining musician. I don't see taking the industry out of the equation as a bad thing because musicians/artists will be/are now in control of their own destiny and income - it will mean though greater effort and responsibility will be put on the shoulder's of up and coming bands and artists to make sure their business venture/model persists and is sustainable almost like being self employed. However, they will generate income by learning and experiencing real life decision making for themselves when the impact of such decisions affects their financial needs. For me the music industry has always been the middle man taking the largest cut of the profits while leaving musicians and artists heavily in-debt and making very little out of their commitment and contribution. Technology has contributed massively in allowing/enabling musicians/artists to release a product of decent quality without the £0.5million attached to it. This is a good thing although I can see the master craftsman point of view and duly respect it. I will say this though, it took several hundred thousand record sales to get to number one in the seventies and up to the mid eighties...now it is only a few thousand. The kids are alright, they do have it a lot easier than most of us did here but times really were so different and much less affordable quote: Russ - (my first bass was a plywood POS called an "Axe", and the guitarist in my first band played a god-awful Marlin - I'd have killed for something as good as a Shine, SX or modern Squier back then) absolutely!! my first bass was a Kay bass coupled with a Carlsbro Hornet and I also would have killed to have been able to get a Yamaha RBX170 and an Ashdown Combo! but we respected what little we had and made the best of it. Lets not bring the kids down for having more choices than we did and the ability to do it all by using technology to achieve it. I have put aside a Gibson SG and a Marshall JCM900 combo for my son when he gets there and I also can't wait to be involved (in the background) when any one of them gig or record. Music is the greatest thing ever and we - the oldies - have an obligation to pass on our skills and experience eventually passing the torch as well!

Hi Chris, simple question: what is it you do? jazz, funk, rock bit of everything etc. for me it was simple realising I was brought up on precisions and eb3's but never quite happy with them individually, the Yamaha Attitude was almost a godsend! well, erm, not quite as dramatic!! it plays like a decent p and has the thump or whooomf of an ebo/3. it might be worth a try?? reading into your posts it would seem we have the same common issues with the pbass: not enough bottom end no true balance between string output or, very few just do it, that thing we have in our heads which tell us is the one! in all my years playing...I have found dimarzio to give the best output - for me - and equalization through the strings and in this finding the attitude. andy

certainly is! thank god I'm rubbish! if it wasn't for the toys and the ability to annoy guitarists and drummers then...it would be just a little less than the best thing ever!!

hand dynamic and technique are difficult to master, it takes years to develop, this is the point, your individual style. my playing is still uneven and hard but I have never stroked the strings as this technique is far too bippy boppy for me as a rock player,. I'm more sort of under the string but not slapping - that's a technique I can't quite get - my advice would be: go to youtube and check out some online tuition from all types of bassplayers, take the tips and incorporate as much as you need/require and develop from there. andy
I've always wanted to try a trace 4x12" as well. I missed out on getting one a few months ago as it was too far away to collect.
if you pm thornybank, I think he may have a trace v-series 4x12? if not it's a 2x15 v-series in the same size box.

Most bass players I know don't like the tone of an SVT IIPro?? very disappointing seems usual comment! Seeing as your in Falkirk, your most welcome to pop over to my practice room in Edinburgh and check out my Trace V4 all valve head and I'm sure Thornybank would bring a couple of his secret gems to the room also. andy

how odd! the college I work for spent in the region of £30k with their online education dept - not one single issue! if I had to say anything out of the ordinary then...instead of two peavey max 112's, they sent me two max 115 instead for the same price. cant say anything other than they were great! andy

Ashdown ABM 810 vs Ashdown MAG 810 vs Marshal MBC 810
andy67 replied to KASH's topic in Amps and Cabs
Don't think there is much better than Ashdown in the value and bang for bucks stake! And, you will have customer services in the UK! There is a lot of affordable/budget 810's out there, all made in China by the looks of things - never been a proponent of Marshall bass gear! guitar gear is tremendous though as is their customer support. It all comes down to tone, depending on what your looking for you can be assured that Ashdown will give you that 'British' tone and plenty of versatility. andy -
AS you already have a GK410 - why not just get another one. 8x10's are only for bass players with roadies
I wish! the drummer helps out though and I do have to say the ampeg 810 is quite easy to move about. andy
