    Very risky even in more stable times. I've bought relatively low value NOS Soviet components such as PIO caps, germanium diodes, transistors etc from there quite a few times. Sometimes they have (eventually) turned up. The other thing I noticed when visiting guitar shops over there & in Ukraine too, is the number of counterfeits being sold in some guitar shops. I've seen really shoddy copies of Musicman, PRS, Rickenbackers etc all being passed as the real deal and at prices significantly higher than in the West. I was kicked out of one shop when I asked where a Stingray I was trying out, had [i]really[/i] come from! I'm not suggesting for a moment that the shop you're thinking about buying from is up to such tricks, but it's something I would bare in mind when dealing with such outlets. The two words that come to my mind are 'barge-pole'

    Like you, I like the tone of TI's but can't get on with the low tension. I'd suggest Sadowsky black label flats. Made by Labella to Roger Sadowsky's spec.s , but different sounding with more punchy mids & less thump than Labellas. Nice tension, lovely feel & great to play.

    [b]*SOLD*[/b] [u]Harley Benton BA500H : 500W Class D amp [/u] Bought this a couple of years ago as a backup, but ended up using it as a main amp for sometime. Done about 50 gigs with no issues, everything from pubs to weddings to festivals through my Barefaced - it's certainly held it's own. It's a great little amp, loud, punchy and a very versatile EQ. Virtually the same circuit as the much respected Ibanez Promethean, produced by the same manufacturer.     Picked up an old GK 800RB yesterday from deepest south Wales, to provide some company for my 400RB Needs the transformer swapping out for a 240v toroidal and caps for most of the knobs, but it sounds wicked - a real beast of an amp this!     If you can build or get someone to build one for you, I would suggest the John Hollis designed 'Flatline'.... a great little optical compressor. I've got DRs & Sadowsky strings on my other basses...whilst not in the same league, these Harley Benton strings are actually pretty good for the money. They've not gone dull & thuddy yet, and feel alright especially for a fiver.

    Recently picked up a 70's style ash bodied, maple neck FJB-20 second hand...Really great bass, ridiculously good for the money I paid. As far as quality is concerned, not that far off the budget Laklands IMHO.

    My 2009 Fender Roadworn...picked it up on ebay for silly money. Bought it initially to sell on for a profit, but despite the relic thing which I was originally not keen on, it's become a keeper. I'm tempted to get it refinished in daphne blue at some point in the future. Strung with an old set of Sadowsky flats & the original stock pickup swapped for Seymour Duncan 'Vintage' SPB-1. A really good precision bass in every way.
