Vantage Point (vantagepointrocks)
vantagepointrocks replied to vantagepointrocks's topic in Live photos & videos
Some footage from our gig in Shetland at the end of August, again using a Zoom Q2 HD for the sound and video, along with a second for subsequent video plus 3 digital cameras and a go pro for the rest of the video. Edited together using Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12.0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sId4rRG7QY -
For a local gig in Edinburgh I have used public transport on many occasion, at the most I am taking instrument and combo amp, though usually will just be instruments. Is no more than a 100 metre walk to the bus stop at either end of the journey. We have a night bus service as well, so not a problem getting home if a late gig on the weekend, though there is always the option of a taxi I suppose. Gig in another city requires a car, or in the case of our last gig in Shetland, a car and then a 14 hour ferry ride. As for dating, most likely just to meet at the pub/cinema/restaurant, that means we can both get public transport there. Or I have been in the situation where the female is the car owner and has come to pick me up – I didn’t judge them by the car they were driving though.

Vantage Point - Recording Footage & Promo Videos

Here is a Lego Brick film I have put together for one of our recent recordings, Tutankhamun. The song was released as a two track digital single, and can thus be streamed on Spotify, Apple, Amazon and the likes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnPW4W2E7_0 -
There is definitely no definitive answer to stage presence, some people radiate cool just by the way they stand, others provide entertainment by being a lot more active. For me I think you need to at least look like you are enjoying yourself, as if you look bored and as if you don’t want to be there then this can transfer to the audience. Other than that I am quite active on stage, pulling many faces and like to play songs with lots of open strings so I can use my fretting hand to point at the audience.

The price of vinyl albums will have to come down considerably before I'll consider purchasing them ahead of CDs.
-
Will the original band be doing the whole gig, or just joining him on stage for a few numbers? I believe they have recorded a new EP together that comes bundled with the new album, which I assume doesn't feature the original players.
-
If you do enjoy the music, the gigs and like the people in the band, then I’d see the rather limited time it takes out of your schedule as a chance to join another band. Hopefully if you could find one that is up for regular rehearsals then you would be able to have the best of both worlds.

Who Buys Downloads From Independent Artists?
vantagepointrocks replied to BigRedX's topic in General Discussion
My band sell CDs, pretty much exclusively at gigs, on rare occasions someone will purchase them over the internet. We used to get the odd download of songs, or full albums, but this has really dropped off in the last couple of years and been replaced by streaming, mainly on Spotify. Though I think a lot of them are people searching for the 21 Pilots track, Stressed Out, as streams of our song of the same name have increased a lot since they released theirs! Personally I don’t download tracks/albums of anyone, whether they are independent or major artists. I sometimes use Spotify on my computer to stream the odd thing I don’t own – I just have the free service for that. But still buy all my music on CD, mainly well known artists, but occasionally local bands if I see and enjoy them at a gig. -
Some footage of my bands first gig of 2017, which was a few weeks ago back in February, but I just got round to editing it together at the weekend. Sound is taken from a ZOOM Q2 HD WHITE placed in front of one of the PA speakers, video comes from that, a second zoom, a go-pro and three digital cameras. I’m actually playing guitar in this video, as I did for most of the gig, don’t have footage for the couple of songs at the end where I played the bass. We are currently rehearsing up a covers set where I am going to soley play bass. For our original material, which is what this video contains, I’ll be sticking with the guitar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW4Y0F8LQSw
On my must-learn list
I'd love to learn that bassline, unfortunately a bit beyond my current abilities, but hopefully with practice I'll get there one day in the future.

Don't know much of her stuff but I do love the bass on the track, You're the One that I want, from the Grease soundtrack.
-
We are just starting to learn a covers set, at the moment I’m enjoying, Bad Reputation by Thin Lizzy and Hell Bent for Leather by Judas Priest the most in rehearsal, but I assume my favourite may change when we get to playing live. As for when we play originals, favourites to play live are, 24 Hour Breakdown & Gripped by the Throat, we would never play either in rehearsal anymore though.

Who's your no 1 bass player and why?
vantagepointrocks replied to SH73's topic in General Discussion
Not sure I have an absolute favourite bass player, but the one whose playing I think is incredible that hasn’t yet been mention is Dave LaRue who plays with Steve Morse on his solo albums. -
Edinburgh seems quite stable at the moment, nothing opened recently, but on the other hand nothing has closed down either.

Thanks for the welcome, certainly finding interesting stuff on the forum and gaining little insights into the bass. Definitely enjoying playing bass, just need to keep practicing and get better at it.

Moving to bass. Thought I’d say hello here, though I have done a few posts elsewhere. Actually play guitar in a band and have done for years, until now been more of a bass owner than a player. But we’ve decided after 10 years of gigging our own songs that we’d try our hands at a cover set for a bit. Normally singer plays the bass, but for the covers I’m going to give the bass a try and let him just handle the vocals and we’ll change to a one guitar band. Really enjoying playing some of the bass lines, which to be honest can be a lot more interesting than the usual rhythm guitar I’m doing. Obviously some of it is quite challenging, but I am getting stuck in and have been practicing at home a lot more than I have done on guitar in recent years. Hopefully won’t be long until I’m playing regular gigs as a bassist. Cheers.

Albums you think are great but are critically panned
vantagepointrocks replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
Iron Maiden Virtual XI – their second album with Blaze on vocals, universally trashed and a poor seller, but there is only one song on it I dislike (Futureal). Status Quo - Ain't Complaining – the Quo go all out AOR with a set of melodic tunes bathed in keyboards. A million miles away from their 70s hard rock output, yet they are accused of always sounding the same on record. Whitesnake - Slip of the Tongue – lambasted for Steve Vai widdling all over it, whereas I love the guitar pyrotechnics over some really good hard rocking tunes. That is just three off the top of my head, I’m sure there are many more in my collection that belong in this category. -

Did the same thing with another track, Book Bus, which we released digitally last year. Video of bass recording - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaGv_SXdXNY Added guitar recording session - https://www.youtube....h?v=ynueiokPNIo Added vocal recording - (well okay that is a mime of the recording session). -
Many great tracks, but my absolute favourite is, Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming, huge fan of the guitar playing of Steve Morse.

I Wanna Be A Winner - Brown Sauce - featuring Noel Edmunds, Keith Chegwin & Maggie Philbin. I got the 7" back in the day and I'm happy to confess that I put it on occasionally and think it is good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDzsa9EP-a4

The magazines, Metal Hammer, Classic Rock & Prog have been purchased by Future Publishing for £800k. They were of course the publishers that originally sold the mags to TeamRock for £10m, a good bit of business for them I guess. My band has decided to do a covers set in order to play some different venues and to different people than we do with our originals. Including a few early Maiden tunes, and I thought I'd try playing with fingers instead of a pick in order to make it a bit more authentic. I can hardly get through half a song without my forearm pretty much giving up. Can't imagine how much practise you'd have to do in order to get the stamina to play a full set like that.

Think the magazines were doing okay and returning a profit, the problem was the parent company, their other activities took them down. Teamrock had an advert free radio station on DAB for two years, which must have cost the a fortune. Then they moved that to online and tried getting paid subscriptions for radio and content access to run alongside the print magazines – obviously didn’t work and has resulted in the magazines being taken down as the rest of the business failed. You’d think if the magazines do have a readership that someone might come in and purchase the titles and ensure they stay on the shelves. There is quite a good article on it here. https://www.themediabriefing.com/article/team-rock-closure And an interview with an ex editor of Classic Rock http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/the-inside-story-of-team-rocks-sudden-closure-my-boss-phoned-and-said-its-all-fd/
