1. I started getting into rock and metal in the mid 80's and when I pick up a new copy of Kerrang or Metal Hammer I might know of 5% of the bands inside. I did enjoy Trivium's Ascendancy album and Lamb of God's As the palaces burn. Then nothing for a few years until I saw Gama Bomb support Lawnmower Deth.
2. If youre a fan of 80s thrash like me Gama bomb are worth checking out. not uk metal but municipal waste have a good thrashy sound also. Both of these bands have been around for a few years and are quite well established now More established bands but the most recent albums from death angel, testament, overkill, exodus, anthrax and kreator I really enjoyed also flotsam and jetsam, trouble, voivod and down have fairly new albums that I really enjoyed recently
3. I think I remember this being mentioned on talkbass in the thread aria sb club I was really just looking for neck specs for the SBR-80 that I was considering buying at the time.
4. I like that Blazer more than any other I've seen. Was the custom range available in unusual colour combinations?
5. I was wondering is this a Hamer neck transplanted onto an Ibanez Studio bass? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-1980s-Ibanez-Studio-ST924WN-924-Walnut-MIJ-Electric-Active-Bass-Guitar-/111516493771?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item19f6e6a7cb Quite a distinctive headstock....
6. I've owned a few Yamaha BB basses and highly rate them. The bridges on these Ibanez are quite easily corroded so would remove the bridge saddle completely before trying a little paint stripper
7. I sold my RB760 a few weeks ago to buy an RB720 I was looking for a 20 fret maple neck with a P bass tone. The RB760 was really nice but it didn't offer anything that the RB950 and RB924 couldn't already do. My RB850 is now defretted, sanded down and finished in a honey coloured wood stain. I'm sure it's lost value because of this but it seems much more use so I'm not that bothered.
8. Thanks Tomas, great to have your knowledge around here.
9. I've never seen an active model in the flesh so couldn't be 100% certain but I think the only difference is the active preamp and different pickup casing.
10. I don't think they made these in 1984 I did own an RS924 which sounded and played great wasn't too light either. I think the roadster became the Roadstar in 1982 or 1983?
11. I've since acquired a passive RB850 and defretted it. I can see why there are held in high regard and I no longer miss my corvette $$.
12. The RB950 on ebay has replacement tuners but looks to be in great condition otherwise.
13. Mark Dyer - that's the sort of post to give me nightmares. I've broken strings and had amps fail mid gig which is stressful enough but never on a big gig thankfully
14. I agree with hamfist the RS924 can cover any sound imaginable. You could turn down the J pickup and create a P bass sound easily. I just bought another Roadstar RB720 which does a great P impression and the neck is almost identical to the RS924.
15. The first three characters on the neck plate should indicate the month and year of manufacture. Mine starts B84...... for February 1984
16. John will clarify but I'd say 1984 (passive) and 1986 (active), great basses, I already own one or I'd be tempted.
17. I got into AC/DC back in 1984 when I was 10 years old. Digging through their back catalogue was an amazing experience and discovering so many great songs that the brothers Young had written, lots of happy memories associated with this band.
18. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RARE-VINTAGE-1983-IBANEZ-ROADSTAR-II-BASS-RB924-RB924CS-BIRDSEYE-MAPLE-TOP-/191313358638?pt=Guitar&hash=item2c8b2a2f2e Shame but it looks like a replacement neck to me and some extra screws behind the bridge.
19. Megadeth - So far, so good... so what! Metallica - ...And justice for all AC/DC - TNT and Back in black Pink Floyd - The wall NoFX - So long and thanks for all the shoes Bad Religion - Suffer Rancid - Lets go Iron Maiden - Live after death The Pogues - Rum sodomy and the lash Entombed - Clandestine The Hellacopters - High visibility Black Sabbath - Masters of reality and Heaven and Hell Overkill - The years of decay
20.
Such a shame you chose a rare, collectable & near-vintage Japanese bass to do that to. Jon.
I know what you mean John, truth be told I've never found the RB850 very exciting visually but have read a lot of positive praise for the dual humbuckers. This way I have managed to justify adding another Roadstar to my collection and it actually has a unique feature. I know there are factory fretless RB850s out there somewhere but they are quite thin on the ground. To be honest I would say the RB850 is the most common Roadstar, from my years of scouring online auction sites.
21. I had been missing a fretless in my collection for a while and this RB850 appeared on ebay earlier this year in very good condition. The original finish was in good condition but I'm not a fan of red finishes so decided to sand it down and stain the wood with a honey coloured beeswax. Removed the frets and filled the fret slots with wood filler, stained the fret board with ebony stain and coated the board in superglue.
22. Looks good, makes sense to de-fret a bass that isn't getting a lot of attention. How are you coping with staying in tune up the dusty end of the neck? I found that a little tricky on an unlined fretless at first
23. What if it was a Justice song, no-one would know what the bass part sounds like anyway I've had a similar dream where I'm mid gig and the strings on my bass have no tension and the neck of the bass comes loose.
24. I didn't get a chance to but I imagine it would have been very interesting. Frank is a great musician and nice guy.
