What tunes have you been learning today?
megallica replied to gary mac's topic in General Discussion
I spent most of the afternoon working out the bass parts from the Marshall Mathers LP by Eminem. Mainly to work on my ear but also to learn more hip hop lines because they're so simple but groove so well!
The title track to that album has some nice playing. I've never sat down and worked out the parts but they sound good. -
Exactly which bit of this bass is fretless?
I assumed it was a lined fretless at a glance. But no there are definately frets on there..... Maybe it's an old picture and he's since de-fretted it. Seems a bit odd -
It's not so much the thinning that bothers me. It's that it's always looked like it's made of straw and he cuts it himself. I love Megadeth, although I lost interest after Risk (which I actually still enjoy) but I made the mistake of watching a couple of recentish interviews with Mustaine and there ain't no way they're ever getting any more money out of me.
Mustaine has always been crazy though but he could do with keeping his big mouth shut from time to time. KB - maybe check out The system has failed or Endgame if you like Megadeth's older material. Risk was okay but definately not what you expect from Megadeth.

Bit gutted I had to miss Megadeth's UK dates because of work commitments, I did see them last June at the Electric Ballroom and they were very good. Big inspiration on my wanting to start playing a bass along with Steve Harris and Cliff Burton. Just checked, Dave is 49 this year, not surprising his hair is a bit thin. I suppose there comes a time in every metal musician's life where they have to make a decision, do I go Kerry King or Kirk Hammet? I've heard some negative reviews of Super Collider but it's still top of my want-to-buy list.

might be of interest to the bass collection fans on here http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/fretless-bass/1020226194 -
There is something about this Roadster on gumtree that doesn't look right. http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/ibanez-fretless-bass-guitar/1020956614#photo-content As far as I know they never offered any other fingerboard other than maple and the quote that they "cost around £1600 new" is hilarious. Not saying it isn't a decent bass but it's a bit on the expensive side, especially if it's been modified.
Thanks for the info and the link. The reason I wrote that the body looks right for a Soundgear was because I wondered if someone had just fitted another truss rod cover as all the Roadstar basses I looked up were different (ie what I expected them to look like). What threw me was the headstock. Not because it's a different shape but because it looks like an amateur job (except the finish) in that the strings don't take a straight path to the tuners and there's no logo. This isn't the sort of thing I would have excepted from Ibanez; their other models are a bit more elegant in this respect. It's still a cool bass though. Shame it's red.
Yeah I think the 1988 online catalogue is just their six string range. Found this page which give a bit more info http://dontai.com/wp/2011/04/04/ibanez-rb800-roadstar-ii-bass-identification/

I think its the transitional 1988 Roadstar RB800, I think Ibanez were forced to change the headstock as it was too close to an existing design It does look very Soundgear like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amL90leO8SU I did message the seller about it and he isn't too sure what model it is.
Last time they were on it was with Lou Reed and it was like the emperors new clothes. It was f***in dreadful!
I think I (deliberately) missed that one, I saw them around the 1996 Load era and then 2008 Death Magnetic era. That Lou Reed project was quite awful.

From liking a band to being an active fan - when does it happen?
megallica replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Underground grunge, punk or metal bands signing to major labels can quite often lead to a more mainstream direction in their songwriting. I have discovered a few bands who went on to become really popular, some like Queensryche, did change their direction and went for a more mainstream sound that I didn't like so much and I did lose interest. I still love Nirvana's Nevermind album but there was something a bit too out of character and calculated about Metallica's Black Album that spoiled things for me. -
They seem to manage perfectly OK when they did exactly that on the Colbert Report a few years ago. It's far more likely that they've never been on because of the BBCs (& most other broadcasters) incredibly sneery, snobby attitude towards "classic" rock (for want of a better term) & heavy metal in general.
They've had Metallica on a couple of times.

I've seen bands I'd never heard of play a support slot and on the strength of that gone out and bought their album(s). Wheras I've bought cds and concert tickets to friends bands to "show support" and have a good night out, I wouldn't say say I'm a fan of these bands. For me it's when a band releases an album and I go out and buy it without having to hear any clips or previews to make sure I'll like it. -
My hubby was meant to play "bad cop" in my negotiations for my last bass..... He was rubbish at it and said "I think you should have it". He's very supportive of my playing and gigs but equally I'm also supportive of his photography (even when he's doing art nude shoots and away for weekends with young attractive models who are happy taking their kit off.... Am I mad! LOL!)
Does he need an assistant? I don't know much about photography but I'm a fast learner with a photographic memory
I quite like the Vampyre, dolphin, vette and fna jazzman
Don't the Corvette and FNA have the same body shape though? I would like to try a thumb bass, I like some of the Warwick shapes but I don't get on with their skinny necks. I do miss my Corvette $$ for its chunky neck and Fortress for its middy tone.
The first bass I bought, new, and still own. A lovely MC-800.
That looks too cool to be a first bass! Congratulations. As the above post points out, www.scottsbasslessons.com is one of the best resources out there for getting that right hand technique down.
Yeah nice first bass, here is a pic of my first bass for comparison, welcome to the boards too
A truly dire Gorilla practice amp. Just shocking.
This was my first amp - why this didn't make me give up and buy a playstation I'll never know. My next amp was a Park 100 watt combo - Marshall's budget range, I'm sure you can imagine how good my Westfield bass sounded through it.

Value of a Warwick Fortress stage one 90's model
megallica replied to barklama's topic in Bass Guitars
I've just recently sanded down my green fortress to reveal a lovely maple grain, two piece - love it! They're great basses for the money although I put a passive set up in my bass with wizards for a more traditional sound. I paid £350 for mine about a year ago, the previous owner I believe had it from new and paid over £1k back in the 90's. My Fortress has become my main gigging bass for my soul band especially now that I've ditched the bogie green colour, much prefer the oiled natural looks, superb slim necks too and top Warwick build quality. Mine is definitely a keeper
If it didn't have the super slim neck I think I would still have mine, the active preamp in mine gave it a really versatile sound. One day I'd like to own the five string version just to have that sound with a wider neck. -
Value of a Warwick Fortress stage one 90's model

This was the advert I mentioned from the old Bassist magazine. Value of a Warwick Fortress stage one 90's model
megallica replied to barklama's topic in Bass Guitars
I'd love to see a Warwick pricelist from the 90's (although 1999 was probably quite different from 1991!) but I'd be surprised if the Fortress was as much as £1k even at the end of the decade. (I bought mine in '98 for about 1600 deutschmarks IIRC). In any case, when I say "budget" I mean relative to the whole Warwick range. The Rockbass Fortresses have a list price higher than the Corvettes which suggests you might be right that the Corvette is more of a budget model than the Fortress, but something I read somewhere made me think otherwise. The only supporting evidence I can find at the moment is the slightly ambiguous quote in http://forum.warwick...of-Warwick-Bass about the introduction of the Fortress (one year after the Corvette): "The Fortress is positioned a bit 'lower than the Corvette, which then takes the role of entry level instrument." I'll see if I can find some old magazines from the 90s with prices in - that would give the best comparison of the models' relative standing.
I can imagine there could have been a definite overlap in the prices of these two ranges as there were a few different models released. I've still got a few issues of Bassist magazine from 95-96, I seem to remember the Corvette was £700 new and the Fortress was 1K. There were a few options with the Fortress, maybe the passive ash models were cheaper than the active Corvette at the time. I'll see if I can find the ad I'm thinking of tonight. -

Aren't the reissues in that price range though? Not saying I'd pay that amount for this but I can almost see the sellers logic.
