  1. I would love to hear some of that. I’m always saying we should do something like that and I’m just met by blank looks. I think the guitarist learns all his stuff from those “Play the songs of Free” type books and can’t deviate at all.
  2. I don’t know… I was long gone. Part of the problem was a huge amount of travel for me… and my dad was in hospital and very ill. They were good musicians and real enthusiasts. My heart wasn’t in it… I’m a soul and funk guy… that’s why I’m currently in a classic rock band (???)
  3. Totally agree for tribute bands. The Springsteen tribute I was once in would spend ages discussing which particular bootleg recording they were going to stick to for each song. But it wasn’t for me.
  4. I’m all for spicing up covers and playing it your own way… we’ve made a definite decision to do that. I also believe you can’t dress too outrageously… and you can’t move around too much on stage, although it was easier when I played sax… at one gig me and the trumpet player jumped off the stage and started jigging with the audience. I believe you should put on a show.
  5. I think you’re putting yourself down. I describe myself as the guy at the back who makes thumpy noises. Anyway… “I am the Walrus” changed my life… forever… irrevocably… inexplicably… seriously.
  6. I played fretless with my last band. We did a load of AC/DC, Lizzy and similar. I turned up with a fretless for the audition and used it at every gig. No-one ever said a word.
  7. If I still had my Warwicks the JAN III would have gone on long ago.
  8. Candy apple red with a black scratchplate. Or any red with an off-white scratchplate…. Just like my two basses.
  9. The Day Before You Came… one of my favouritest songs of all time. Boney M… responsible for the line - there was a cat who really was gone (Rasputin)… awesome. Where’s me purple split-knee loons?
  10. Just seen on the news that they will be recording a weird digitised concert… their images will be diddled so they appear as they did in THE 70s… not in THEIR 70s. Fact is… I still fancy Agnetha… no digitising necessary.
  11. I’d go for a Zoom B1 four plus headphones of your choice… mine are reference-style AKG and good enough for me… and an aux in. I will admit you have all those pesky cables but much cheaper and hours of endless fun fiddling around with patches. The adaptive sound is a bit weird… but Indon’t move around on stage anyway.
  12. So you’ve already been on the banjo forum, then…
  13. I used to be on a banjo forum… think it’s called the banjo hangout. There were some great characters on there. They’ll have the answer to your question… they also seem to know a lot about guns…
  14. Just make sure you didn’t make the same dumb mistake I made… I had the whole thing tuned an octave down. After years of bass playing I didn’t realise it went so high.
  15. Sounds like you’re stormin’ ahead with this already… hope it all works out. My preferred modus operandi is to join a band with gigs booked… and their own PA. It’s not in my nature to be a BL.
  16. I currently don’t like anything I play. I’m in a classic rock band and I’m strictly soul and funk myself. That’s the compromise for finding a truly local band so I don’t have to travel all over the country. I play JS Bach and othe baroque/classical on the flute… which I rather like. As the current band is on the edge of imploding I may be devoting more time to that… hopefully soon.
  17. This me in my day job as a bounty hunter for the dark lord of the Sith…
  18. I’ve been designing posters for events for half a century. Firstly, make sure the fonts/information are readable and prominent. Secondly, evoke interest and (particularly) curiosity. Feel free to utilise whatever level of artistry is at your command… subject to the above… and remaining in keeping with your “brand”. I now use Procreate for digital art (15 quid-ish), but I think Sketchbook is free. But… for Procreate you will need an iPad and Apple pencil. I think sketchbook will work across different platforms. As noted above, there are loads of free photoshop-type apps which will probably do the job. Edit… or some rub down letters and a drawing pen…
  19. Well, Sonia I might as well tell you I put a Nordy PJ set in my MIM Mustang a while ago and they are truly awesome.
  20. Shame… they’d be worth at least 15/6 by now. My brother still has all the original EPs… in mono, of course. Because he was older and bought the Beatles stuff, I ended up having to get Frank Ifield and Freddie and the Dreamers.
  21. I remember when you could get a plastic Beatles wig for 2/6 at Woollies.
  22. It has to be sound over image. I once played sax in a Springsteen tribute… I definitely didn’t look like Clarence.
