Cheers Twincam, I'm not too bad with a needle file. I think it might be wise to get a better contact area between string and nut so I'll give that a go. @ Bassman7755; I've not got a problem with playability even with the situation as described. What benefit could be had from lowering the strings as you said? @ Grangur; I've heard of the practice of nut swapping. Makes my eyes water frankly. I appreciate the idea though I'd likely loose a nut in the process.

Welcome Rob. If you have no fixed ideas of where to start you could do worse than have a dabble at more than one method. I find it helps to round me off a bit more. Sometimes I buy play-along books of tablature with a CD that does each tune with and without the bass part. I have had a go at the tutor method but eyesight problems made that a no go. I self learned tab and had a smattering of primary school notation but for reasons already mentioned, I don't sight read. Youtube furnishes clips of tunes that I fancy having a go at and sometimes the tab can be had from the 'net too. Best of all, find a play mate or mates and do ensemble if you can. Living musicians are far better to learn with than play-along recordings. Good luck, keep us up to date.

I've just put some Rotosound Tru Bass 88s on my Vantage fretless. These are heavy gage flats wound with black nylon. I had to ease the slot in the D string saddle else the string was sitting on the groove rather than in it. Similarly the E and A strings show daylight between the string and the bottom of the nut slot. (Fnar fnar. Excuse me while I have a Finbarr Saunders moment.) As it is, the guitar plays well and I am bedding in the new strings with little or no issue. I am wondering however if it would be worth: - widening the nut slots just enough without deepening to get the strings to sit in the slot fully? or - leave it well alone in case I go back to a lighter gage later?

It helps. In my case I had to get over myself because bass was so cool in my youth and it went to my head a little. Like Victor Wooten said "the music in my head is far better than the music that reaches your ears".

Thanks for that. I found it inspirational even though I am closer to your age. I passed on the music challenge as a youth when my band mates wanted me to commit full time. I already had an excellent apprenticeship and felt I wanted a guaranteed living rather than going for it like you did. No regrets you understand but it is nice to dream about where I might have ended up with my mates all those years ago.
