U2 and the Irish Uprising of the Eightees
the "Meeting Place" on Dorset St.
Just up from Bolton Street Tech where I studied Aero Engineering. What a pub man! It was waaaaay too convenient to drop in for a pint and a "chaser" on my way home from tech. They had some mix tapes behind the bar of bands they'd hosted. I never heard the same tune twice nor did I hear a single tune that didn't hook me in some way. Again, Good linkage, Red Peters and Skid Row I know of but The Business is new to me so I'll catch up on that in a bit. Many thanks. -
Welcome Fester. I like your avatar. When I grow up I want to be just like Uncle Fester.

Wow thanks Coilte. I used to hear a lot about them but never sat and listened. Born in '62 as I was, that's the sort of sound that was subconsciously absorbed by my very young brain. It resonates nicely now. I was lucky to live in a pub for a few years where my parents booked musicians to perform ballads in the bar every Sunday night. Not quite as Blue describes a bar gig but an education for me none the less. I remember a fair few of the showband names too like Big Tom, Philomena Begley, Tom McEvoy, Gina, Dale Haze and The Champions and lots more. In my early working life I'd go to the basement of the Harcourt Hotel in Dublin for some blues with Red Peters or similar. Great times. -
Any love for Something Happens? "Stuck Together With God's Glue" is a superb album.
I'd not heard of this band until you mentioned them. Thanks, I've got some clips down and they rock, as they say. -
Clannad where outstanding during the 80s
I saw them at my boarding school twice. They performed for us when they were a purely acoustic band in 1976 and '77. A school mate had done one of the promotional posters in black ink and celtic scrolls for the notice board and it caught Enya's eye as she walked past. I remember the delight she took in it. She asked if she could keep it. How could he refuse? About ten years later, I was delighted to find that they had made the big time with their performance of the theme to TV's Robin of Sherwood series and I was as blown away by their awesome yet simple sound using cutting edge contemporary instruments as when I heard them first. Enya went on to make a respectable solo career with many album and single releases. -

Vary rare, I believe BTW, you're putting up some rare stuff my friend. Urge sounds like a good band. Seen 'em live then? -
Stiff Little Fingers. Still going strong.
Stiff Fingers are British. It doesn't bother me too much because they come from the same island and there is a great deal of cross border collaboration in music circles but please bear in mind the original post -
"The success of this band (U2) along with the Boomtown Rats, Horslips, Christy Moore with the Moving Hearts and many others stirred the youth of a largely catholic and somewhat repressed Republic of Ireland to make their own way to the world music stage."
-
You needn't apologise for humour. We're grateful for all the good humour we can get! I just thought your comment was witty enough to make quote of the week, that's all. Keep 'em coming mon ami.

Christy Moore and Donal Lunny performed in both Planxty and Moving Hearts. -
I was too young to remember U2s debut, but The Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree were were ubiquitous on car stereos all over Fermanagh during the 80s. There were also a couple of summers where you couldn't go 10 minutes without hearing 'Don't go' by Hothouse Flowers.
There's a fair bit of U2 stuff that is overlooked. I did a yooboob search this morning and dug up songs like Gloria, 11 O'Clock Tick Tock, A Day Without Me, Stories for Boys. Great cheese value when you get tired of the less mature varieties. I saw the Hothouse Flowers play a free gig at Saint Annes Park in Dublin. Superb in that setting, they were relatively new but endured as we now know. -
While we are on the subject of great Irish bands, does anyone remember "Ozone" ? Hard to find anything from them on You Tube. Could only find this "Soundcloud" track. Sadly only one band member is alive today. https://soundcloud.c...rs-delight-9-15
If that is Noel Kelehan late of RTE then I am sorry to say that he is in full time care but they say "He can still play the piano, read music and change key at will." I can not say when that was put on the 'net however. -
Must say I've never heard of the Bogey Boys.
I only knew of them because my school mates were out at a pub (underage) and bootlegged the gig. I got their cassette entitled "Jimmy Did It!" and I still find it entertaining. Seems the band had a brief run between the end of the seventies and the start of the eighties. There is some information on t'net about the 2012 reformation with two of the original band. It looks like they had some Irish bookings for that year but I see nothing after that. -
I know people who will take two of everything to a gig, even two clip-on headstock tuners!!
I believe OCD is an occupational hazard amongst touring musicians. I heard a roadie say once that any item once asked for, was always carried, as if it was provoking a superstition to do otherwise. I can kinda understand it but I would hate to get that way.
A celebration of Irish music... Excellent. I was a huge fan of Horslips (in particular), Planxty and Christy Moore. I also listened to the Joshua Tree non-stop when it first came out. Very much into the Frames for a while. Never managed to get into the Boomtown Rats for some reason.
Planxty is an interesting one. Paul Brady from Northern Ireland was involved. I think all of the members still work in various projects of their own. Ever heard of The Bogey Boys (late seventies)? I could find nowt on the 'net for ages and then they reformed in 2012. -
Anyone remember the Tube special? Unsure whether is was from the north or south, but the two standout bands were The Bankrobbers and Cruella de Ville. The music business is a cruel mistress; neither of these bands made it past a couple of singles.
They are both from Northern Ireland. It is a different country to the Republic of Ireland (OP) Thanks anyway -
Let's go the other way : Evil Blizzard have 4 (that's FOUR) bassists. Epic.
I must go and look them up just to make sure that they don't have an individual bassist for each string...

In light of the recent banter regarding U2 and its components I'd like to start a thread that recognises work that gets overlooked when put beside the "hits" and the fund-raisers. A lot of bands say that they feel they might be victims of their own success. I lived in Ireland when this happened: https://www.youtube....h?v=kLQ4Exa8qFM The success of this band along with the Boomtown Rats, Horslips, Christy Moore with the Moving Hearts and many others stirred the youth of a largely catholic and somewhat repressed Republic of Ireland to make their own way to the world music stage. We all know the hits, let's see some of the less well "promoted" songs, good, bad or indifferent -
