1.
Anyone remember the Tube special? Unsure whether is was from the north or south, but the two standout bands were The Bankrobbers and Cruella de Ville. The music business is a cruel mistress; neither of these bands made it past a couple of singles.
They are both from Northern Ireland. It is a different country to the Republic of Ireland (OP) Thanks anyway
 2.
Let's go the other way : Evil Blizzard have 4 (that's FOUR) bassists. Epic.
I must go and look them up just to make sure that they don't have an individual bassist for each string...
 3. In light of the recent banter regarding U2 and its components I'd like to start a thread that recognises work that gets overlooked when put beside the "hits" and the fund-raisers. A lot of bands say that they feel they might be victims of their own success. I lived in Ireland when this happened: https://www.youtube....h?v=kLQ4Exa8qFM The success of this band along with the Boomtown Rats, Horslips, Christy Moore with the Moving Hearts and many others stirred the youth of a largely catholic and somewhat repressed Republic of Ireland to make their own way to the world music stage. We all know the hits, let's see some of the less well "promoted" songs, good, bad or indifferent -
 4.
Depends who is asking...
HMRC would probably want to know.
 5. Cheers Twincam, I'm not too bad with a needle file. I think it might be wise to get a better contact area between string and nut so I'll give that a go. @ Bassman7755; I've not got a problem with playability even with the situation as described. What benefit could be had from lowering the strings as you said? @ Grangur; I've heard of the practice of nut swapping. Makes my eyes water frankly. I appreciate the idea though I'd likely loose a nut in the process.
 6. Welcome Rob. If you have no fixed ideas of where to start you could do worse than have a dabble at more than one method. I find it helps to round me off a bit more. Sometimes I buy play-along books of tablature with a CD that does each tune with and without the bass part. I have had a go at the tutor method but eyesight problems made that a no go. I self learned tab and had a smattering of primary school notation but for reasons already mentioned, I don't sight read. Youtube furnishes clips of tunes that I fancy having a go at and sometimes the tab can be had from the 'net too. Best of all, find a play mate or mates and do ensemble if you can. Living musicians are far better to learn with than play-along recordings. Good luck, keep us up to date.
 7.
Does anyone else go completely blank when asked to play 'something'?
Yes.
 8. Welcome Don.
 9. Welcome Mark.
 10. I've just put some Rotosound Tru Bass 88s on my Vantage fretless. These are heavy gage flats wound with black nylon. I had to ease the slot in the D string saddle else the string was sitting on the groove rather than in it. Similarly the E and A strings show daylight between the string and the bottom of the nut slot. (Fnar fnar. Excuse me while I have a Finbarr Saunders moment.) As it is, the guitar plays well and I am bedding in the new strings with little or no issue. I am wondering however if it would be worth: - widening the nut slots just enough without deepening to get the strings to sit in the slot fully? or - leave it well alone in case I go back to a lighter gage later?
 11.
I have no idea what your talking about
http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/fastshow/characters/ron_manager.shtml
 12.
Keep in mind, I'm a Yankee.
Gosh really? Heeheehee, it's all right Blue, we still luv ya.
 13.
I'm not sure I agree with this...
I dislike Marc Almond's work myself as witnessed by a catty remark of mine above. It's always going to be the same whether he performs his own stuff or owt else. Is Marc Almond also disliked in the "profession" then? I also think that Laura is a fine singer and I like what I've heard of and about Sing to the Moon. I made the comment because I felt she was not confident in her performance in the Prom tribute to David that's all. It's nowt to criticise her for either, it kind of goes with the territory. Do you not think so?
 14.
I hope my clarification serves.
I did my apprenticeship with Aer Lingus I'll have you know! I know the word your thinking of. [Rolling on the floor laffing my arse off]
 15.
hooning about
Remind me... isn't that in or around the 500Hz mark?
 16. It helps. In my case I had to get over myself because bass was so cool in my youth and it went to my head a little. Like Victor Wooten said "the music in my head is far better than the music that reaches your ears".
 17.
July 2016 Attached Thumbnails Blue
I like the monitoring system. In certain parts of London that might be known as "showing a bit of wedge". Was that a festival gig? Doesn't look like any pub gig that I've been to.
 18. Hello Bottomofthebarrel and welcome again.
 19.
I mean, is being nice THAT much of a challenge for some people on here?
Point taken, quite agree!
 20.
Look forward to joining in.
You already have. Welcome Glenn. There are plenty of folk like yourself and myself here as well as a wealth of talent and experience, oh... and wit.
 21.
Be aware there are some people reading Basschat who like nothing better than to drop those named players a heads up.
Thank you for your your advice. I'd edit my comment but that would make me a hypocrite. Anyone wishing to "dob me in" can go right ahead. I spent part of my formative years living and working in Dublin when U2 were breaking. I'd love to meet Bono, he was something of an inspiration to us in the day and I am quite sure he has seen much worse than my little jab and taken it in good humour. Sorry for any offence caused, none was not intended.
 22.
I saw some of this this on iplayer not long ago. To me it was utterly flat and lifeless. Never heard Laura Mvula before and won't be checking her out any time soon. Not impressed with this bloke Paul Buchnanan, half mumbling half sleeping
Please don't judge the participants of a tribute on their performance of another artist's work. Healthy good natured criticism in this discussion apart, ALL of the people at the Prom are well respected in their own field of endeavour. Oh, and Laura Mvula is usually a LOT more interesting to listen to.
