Which one was the hardest song you have learned and why?
SpondonBassed replied to fiatcoupe432's topic in General Discussion
The MarloweDK cover on YouTube sounds right to me. I used that to help me nail it.
Interestingly that is blocked on the basis of my country for copyright reasons by SME. Who tf is/are SME? -
I sweated blood learning this to play at a wedding. The first thing to watch is that most transcriptions of it are wrong. The version that was in Bassist magazine, for example, has so many errors it's almost worse than having nothing. It's a lot easier if your hands are in the right place... Keep your right hand over the bridge pickup and use rest strokes, anchoring your thumb on the E string just neckside of the pickup. I could provide a correct transcription (i.e. as NWR plays it) if you're interested... although it might be exactly what you're already playing.
Yes please! Er, can I have it in tab too? Not essential but helpful. -
A titanium fretboard might be a bit of a challenge
Indeed. I chose titanium as a base metal because I've worked with it before. I chose on the basis of lightness and stiffness but I don't know how it would be with enamel adhesion. Machining it can be tricky too. All my enamelling experience is with copper and mild steel. I think the trick would be in getting an enamel-receptive finger board that is thick enough not to distort yet light enough as to cause no neck dive or strap rash. Also, titanium is non magnetic.

I have just put together a list of features that I would like if I was to order a custom build from scratch. If there is a more appropriate place in BC to post this, please let me know. My first ever custom build would be;

Fretless (4 or 5)
Metalflake gold body
Composite neck using gold coloured resin (perhaps)
White enamelled hardware
Fingerboard in solid white finished metal, pinstripe outline lined in blue (no fretlines)
Active J and P configuration, blue pick-ups
Onboard FM
Onboard tuner with mute toggle switch
Blue LED side dots (small dots for every fret position between the larger dots as per convention)
Black nylon flats.
25-2-17. Edited out Ti and changed "fretboard" to fingerboard, added that pick-ups are to be blue. I'm putting that idea out to tender for estimates if anyone's interested? AndyJR or Jabba the Hut spring to mind but I am sure that other luthiers or builders are reading. If so and if interested, please PM me for discussion about it and how much it might cost.
I like that. For the real vintage look, how about ye even older blue and white enamel?
Yeah man! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/301169-an-impossible-dream/

It's all coming together nicely. May I suggest that that to compliment the bass with white hardware the owner might consider a white suit and hat like Larry Graham...? Some of his basses were all white but with - OT - gold coloured hardware. I think a bass in metalflake gold with white hardware would have a similar impact visually speaking.
Overture 1928 by Dream Theatre. I learnt it fot my friends prog metal side project. There were more notes to learn in that one song than about ten of the regular verse-chorus-verse type songs in my pop covers band. I never really nailed some of the insanely fast runs that myung does. Anyway, certainly made me appreciate the technicality of the peops who play this genre of music. I also find that I have trouble really committing to really learning a song well unless I know that it's going to be gigged.
Me too. Edit: I just listened back and realised that this is a dubbed version for whatever reason, probably international copyright. The officially released film - Amadeus - was quite good however so I can recommend it as something to watch and chill with. -
...Don't even mention Paul Turner's flawless version with Shuffler, which is noticeably faster than the original.
Rhythm stick cover; Sorry to go against your wishes by mentioning but I have to say - for the pointer towards Shuffler - - thanks. -
...Of course, Rhythm and Blues are - like Country and Western - two discrete musical genres, which means there's absolutely no impediment to starting a Rhythm & Western band.
I can see a potential impediment to Country and Blues becoming a long standing or indeed a viable musical genre; It would be (roughly) as depressing as Leonard Cohen passing razor blades amongst the audience just prior to a gig and then singing about what really happened to Old Yeller. Ultimately, the audience would suffer self imposed extinction. Surely this is one genre that would not attract any sort of lucrative recording contract.

Your Bass doesn't 'suit' the band...
SpondonBassed replied to LewisK1975's topic in General Discussion
...Anyway, after last night's vocal rehearsal and subsequent discussion, it is apparent that I can use whatever I like. She just wanted to have an image of a new, modern prog band, fronted up with old style guitars. But as it turns out, the guitarist who has a PRS is also preferring to use that so it's kind of a moot point now...
Ahhh closure. Gee. Very happy to hear it was nowt significant. Full steam ahead then. -
Some males, when meeting other males, need to show who is the pack leader. You can snarl and challenge, roll over and show your belly or sidestep. Tell him you've ordered a new one and it's in the mail (which never arrives) or use humor. Tell him his bird likes your deep throbbing bass just like it is.
Then pee on a nearby thicket, scratch your arse and light one up. -
What about white enamel then? Like ye olde style kitchen bowls, enamel (which is glass) on metal.
White hardware. Why doesn't anyone make White hardware. I expect it will be expensive, but it's the only obvious colour that I think is missing.
Why not try for a crowd funded start-up and go for it? I've been busting to use the word niche in a conversation as it is one of the current buzz words and that idea is well niche man! Thanks for the opening. Heeheehee By the way, you raise a good point there. I remember seeing a Honda 400/4 resto with white header pipes. With a colour matched paint scheme it was something special. I doubt it would look too good after a blast on salty Winter roads though.

How could they claim it was gold if the price was less than a chromed piece? I think it's a subliminal trick because no grown-up would believe it consciously but folk deceive themselves if they want something they think makes them "better" somehow. OT; I wanted a draining rack for the kitchen sink last year and was appalled by the tat that was available. I was surprised to see Homebase trying to pass off one of theirs as stainless steel when it was clearly chrome plated mild steel. I ask you...!

At the moment it's Rhythm Stick. Not so much difficulty learning it as executing it faithfully. -
Musicman Stingray 4H with Piezo Bridge
SpondonBassed replied to Jaxx204's topic in General Discussion
Plus one. I hear almost nothing about piezo on bass. My mate's just about to fit a piezo bridge and preamp to his latest uke build so it's especially of interest at the moment. -
It's Local area called Wales. You can see that advertised opportunities are weak. Blue
Yes. What I remember about JMB (JoinMyBand dot co dot uk) when it worked for me was that there seemed to be a healthy amount of turnover in between the bumps and repeats. Seems the site owner isn't bothered sorting out my log-in issues however so it's a dud now. I believe it is run by a chap from home who isn't really into web publishing. I understand your approach from various postings about your career change late in life. You done good by the sound of it. Much respect.

I haven't been able to get anywhere much with JMB. After several attempts to contact the site owner to reset a corrupted account I gave up. Has anyone actually managed to correspond with him/her ever?

So, what do you think brought you to the bass?
SpondonBassed replied to Dazed's topic in General Discussion
I never thought I'd end up playing the instrument even though I always loved the bass sound in any music I heard. I had given up on music having left one school just as it was becoming a significant part of the curriculum to go to another where it was a subject of choice. For lots of reasons I could not make it my choice then. Later, I tried to learn guitar from a Bert Weedon Play in a Day book. It turned me off the idea completely and I never thought about playing anything until I was away from home and earning on my apprenticeship. I used to hang with a group of brothers three of whom still lived at home, the other three all successful jobbing musicians. All of the three younger ones played, the youngest being the most versatile and the closest in age to myself. He loved drums however and when he and another mate on guitar were jamming, I was persuaded to play. They told me to put one finger here and pluck then put it there and pluck, repeat and try to stay on the beat. All of this on one of the other brothers' left-handed perspex bass. I loved it despite being right handed. After a few months of regular jamming I bought my own instrument for right hand and relearned everything. We weren't covering anything. It was all "original" if a bit juvenile. We played at a couple of band play-offs for a laff but I soon had to decide whether to put the required time into continuing to perform and drop my apprenticeship or leave the band. I decided not to drop the apprenticeship because it came with more guarantees. The lads were a bit upset but soon forgave me. It took another thirty years before I decided I needed to play covers and applied myself properly to the task. In answer to the OP question, lack of something constructive to do whilst with my mates drew me to it. Not exactly boredom, more a need to have something better to do than the Beavis and Butthead thing all the time. -
Thanks Guys for the all the inputs. I had a feeling the topic might be of interest and I'm genuinely grateful for all the opinions. As it turns out we're having a vocal rehearsal tonight, and I intend to bring it up. It's certainly valid that I'll be most comfortable when playing the Yamaha, which in turn as said by a few above, lends itself to a better performance. I'm hoping this angle will sway it. There's been a few messages bouncing around this afternoon and I've touched on it there, so it shouldn't be too much of a surprise when I bring it up. Back when I have more news!
I hope you end up with a satisfying project at the end of it all. All the best. -
Louis 'Thunderthumbs' Johnson. I love slap and make no apologies for it and to me LJ was/is the master. Larry Graham may've started it all but LJ took it to another level while still keeping it relevant and not showboating for the hell of it.
Wikipedia suggests that he may be the reason we have Stingrays.

Which one is the bass that will end your GAS
SpondonBassed replied to fiatcoupe432's topic in General Discussion
Realistically I think I could cure my GAS if I were to get a [s]Ritter R8 Concept[/s], err a really nice [s]Status Kingbass[/s], no... [s]an Alembic SC[/s] ....my next build with Andyjr... Who am I kidding?? I know a fool and his money are easily parted....I'l always have an obsession with something - if it isn't basses it'll just be with something else..probably amps....or something that YOU've got!!
I've got a nice bridge over the Thames that I could let you have at a modest price. Cash in advance though. OT; I saw your now restored axe at Andy's before he did his magic on it. I thought he was attempting the impossible when he described what needed doing. When I saw it finished - WOW! You're a lucky boy to have him making one for you but I don't have to tell you that do I? Regards to you both -
Rickenbacker 4001 in white with black scratch plate. There was one in Andy Baxter's recently which was spot on. http://andybaxterbas...ails.php?id=880 Failing that, I'm 50 in a couple of years so a Y.O.B. 1969 Precision will be on the cards, assuming I make it.
Yeah right. I wanted an orgy for my fiftieth but never got one no matter how many hints I dropped. Heeheehee.
