1.
Only because I've had to take the hit on PayPal fees! I gave them the option of either.
Fair point. I just wondered if you had the opportunity to insist on cash on collection or whether the arrangement for collection by the parents was made after the purchase went through.
 2.
I've just sold a bass which was collection only. The guy is getting his parents to collect it from me. He paid by PayPal. I'm not letting it go until I've seen and photographed their ID and taken a picture of them with the bass out of its case. Call me paranoid but that seems to me to be the best precautions against a chargeback i can take.
In hindsight of this post - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/300931-couriers-whos-responsible/page__view__findpost__p__3242368, do you think you'd have felt better if you'd arranged for the parents to pay on collection? Just curious.
 3.
Paul McCartney probably got me into bass, but once I realised it was one guy playing most of the Motown hits I was loving, I became a massive fan of James Jamerson.
Oo. Controversial.
 4.
I want a semi hollow really badly. I doubt that will be the end though. I also want a decent Jazz bass. The only cure is money,
I disagree. If money was no object and every bass was available to buy you'd end up with more basses than you could possibly hope to play. In fact you'd become one of those queer creatures - a collector.
 5. Wikipedia says of Tetsu Yamauchi; "He retired from the music industry in the mid 1990s and moved to the countryside with his family to live a quiet life, refusing to speak to anyone from the press. He considers it juvenile and vain for people his age to still be performing rock and roll, and refused invitations to take part in a Faces reunion." Born in 1946, he would have been 49 in 1995... Maybe I shouldn't even try to start at my age (54). On the other hand and given his credentials, I can understand why someone would say that. Good luck with the search for notation. Like yourself, I often find the bass parts are lost in the older recordings. I found this on BC; http://basschat.co.uk/topic/176068-andy-frasers-free-basslines/page__view__findpost__p__1651098 Following the link in that post resulted in an error message but the site owner's contact details are available if that's of any help. Let us know if you get anywhere with it please?
 6. Plus one for Maccer. I used to love hearing his basslines on jukeboxes because it was the only place as a child where I could get a decent amount of bass. Record players, radios and tellies were crap. I didn't get to go to cafés very often and would have to fill in the basslines with my imagination when listening to the same tunes at home.
 7. This is a trick question. The Greek is quite right. There is no cure for the GAS. Ask any hi-fi buff from the seventies. Ask any hi-def buff from this era. You upgrade one piece of your system thinking it is the last piece in your puzzle and it exposes another (perceived) weak spot. This is a trap that enthusiasts fall into quite often, the upgrade cycle. It isn't long before you replace every bit of what you started out with and find you are still trying to scratch that "itch". It doesn't matter if you are into music, cars or computers; if you are that enthusiastic, you will never be satisfied. I used to be like that until I realised I was missing the point - the music not the equipment I was playing it on. Now if I could get an affordable Warwick GPS Corvette 5 FL Bubinga, my life would be complete. Hahahahahahahaha! Yeah right.
 8. Not the sort of vinyl I was expecting to read about. Good luck otherwise. Heeheehee
 9. Was it in any way detrimental to the performance? I ask because you mention everyone hitting the dance floor. Sounds like it might have been a good thing for the punters.
 10.
LaBella do a copper tapewound set. Got them on my Thumb. They did 'oxidise' a bit at the nut end though so I now have a copper/green effect
Verdigris? Wow. I bet hipsters are queueing up to order this as an "instant" patina/relic effect. Do you get admiring glances from dodgy looking men with beards?
 11.
Stop Making Sense is a classic. I remember seeing it at our local 'art-house' cinema (the Phoenix in Finchley Central) just after it was released and within 20 minutes everybody was up bopping in the aisles. Re the lovely Tina, I'd say she was just a bit highly strung - or maybe just high.
We were the same. It was showing at the cinema at the top of O'Connel Street in Dublin for a long time.
 12.
Hi Only just caught up with the thread. I'll probably be taking Neil (Len_Derby) and between us we'll have a decent number of basses but there still should be a seat left if Dave_the_bass can't make it
Cheers Andy. We'll see what's happening nearer the time.
 13. Don't worry. Someone will spell it out for you presently.
 14.
Come on then, I'm still waiting for your point... if you know it all then do tell
Point made. You wont have a leg to stand on in any court if you call money exchanged in a sale a gift. Sorry I had to spell it out again. Now it's your turn to calm down I think.
 15.
Also a lot of landlords will be filling their 2017 diaries right now, so don't hang about and get out there pedaling
Are you trying to give me more GAS?
 16.
Calm down buddy. Yes it's a sale and the PayPal gift option is just one way to transfer funds. Absolutely nothing to do with being clever and NO PayPal payment option has anything to do with HMRC. What was you point again?
Whoosh.
 17. Badass, Busy, Bombastic, Bomping, Bowel-worrying. All are alliterative adjectives for bass.
 18.
Yes, we have clubs like Ronnie Scott's right in Milwaukee, for example Shank Hall. Not sure why they call it a "Hall"it's a club actually a small bar. They primarily book headliners. I saw Stanley Clark there. They don't book book local bar bands. Most shows have ticket prices between $35.00- $50.00. Blue
Arnold's diner used to get some good acts too. I saw Weezer play there AND they were singing about Buddy Holly.
 19.
I am definetely not cool but I used kool as reference to the song I quoted, oh I am so witty it hurts. Now put that bucket away, not healthy.
I'll make a point of laughing at some point in the evening. I'm keeping the bucket however. It makes a fetching top hat once the spew has been poured out.
 20.
Gnomic? GNOMIC?? What the spong does that even mean??
What's a "spong"? I can understand someone playing in the style of a gnome but seriously wtf? Heeheehee
 21.
Buttery biscuit
Oh yes! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfeyUGZt8nk Crikey, that's five years old now.
 22.
Hefty?
Since you ask, phat and hefty should do for a guess.
 23.
Just a quick question - what is the "coolest" way to play your bass? A. On your lap, sitting down. B. On a the longest strap possible, down by your knees. C. On the shortest strap possible, at chest height. D. Stood still and held almost vertically across your body.
That's a trick question. If you have to ask, you don't understand the term "cool". It's possible you have it confused with the term "fashionable".
 24.
Selling the band can be done by any one person who's switched on and has the band's interests at heart. It makes sense to have someone who is "equipped". Set someone up with a folder or tablet that has some images of the band. Some "studio" posed ones would be ok, but you need some that look like the band is playing a gig. After all, you're wanting the guy to take a risk. Their fear is that you look at mess and sound cr@p. So why not hand out CDs as well. The person selling you needs to come across as professional and dependable too. Remember that people don't like to take a risk so you need to make him feel comfortable. A switched-on non-employed wife of the band would be great. But they need to come across as confident and passionate about your performance.
Thanks. You seem to be in support of a human presence rather than a sole reliance on Internet material.
 25.
what sort of stuff are you playing (originals, covers, genre, etc) and what have you tried? My own experience is that you need someone to take on the manager/promoter side of things - ideally someone who has the gift of the gab (usually the singer, and being gobby does tend to come with their territory) and will happily spend an evening ringing and e-mailing places and chatting to them about why your band is exactly what they need. All the bands I've been in that have struggled to get gigs suffered from a lack of anyone who was good at that, and the ones that have got regular gigs always had one person who was great at it.
A single point of contact makes sense. In this case the singer. It makes little sense to me to be looking at the Internet for promotion on your local patch. Maybe see what financial implication there is to engaging someone outside of the band.
