I have a former band mate who now lives up near you who is involved in Open Mic/Jam nights at Marehay and Hallfieldgate. Any use to you?
Thanks Obbm, yes please. PMd. -
Good! From little acorns... never too late... erm... nowt as queer as folk... um... never wipe your arse with a broken bottle. Seriously though, good luck. Playing with other people is good for the soul. So to speak.
Trust you. Cuh! Thanks my friend, for making us all smile. -

Cheers my friend. That's nice of you to say. -
Cheers for that. It 's not completely out of reach then. Something to ponder and dream about... Sorry for the thread hijack Spondon.
No apology required. Thank you anyway. I don't think mine will be a composite based one but it doesn't hurt to look at what's possible. There was a carbon Steinberger that looked similar to my wooden one. I saw a YT clip of a lad reviewing it and it looked kinda tempting. As a matter of fact that has just given me a lucid moment - first one of the New Year. I should see if I can get a go on a Steiny carbon because I own the wooden version. It should be easier to appreciate the differences in materials. I could then list the pros and cons of each material for a body shape that I am familiar with. I'll look out for the NBD post I hope you'll put up if you get yours.
Thanks for all of the above. It's a gig we've done for ten years, just a pub with music, BUT with a new landlady. Cheers Graham
Is she a control freak? -
yup, sounds like arse covering going on..
"Arse covering" - is that like wallpapering a buttock or is the landlord expecting a cover of "Arse", that classic tune from Geddy and the Glutes? -
is a common whinge among many music fans on Internet forums viz techno, hip hop, House etc. Personally I don't care how music is made just as long as it sounds good to my ears and feet. But I've come across many posters who can get quite worked up about 'electronica' and the use of laptops sequencers, samplers etc saying these genres aren't proper music. That said a lot of so-called dance/electronica combos do use real instruments live and sometimes in the studio. Just wondrin' what basschatters think. Feel free to vent your spleen if the mood takes you
I try to avoid getting into ruts caused by conventional thinking. Sometimes however it is a comfortable option. I'm with you in that I don't care too much. If it makes my feet tap and my head sing, it's good. Bowie's Space Oddity would be compromised without the stylophone bit for example. er... er... oops

Composite technology is something that I have never felt comfortable with. I think that is an impression that I was left with from getting poor lay-ups where voids and splits were bound to occur over time. My thinking is so last century. I'd have to spend a good hour with a composite guitar to help improve. Anyone got a loaner within taxi distance?
Got asked for this for the first time after playing for over fifty years. Is this a new thing? Anybody else experience this? I declare all my band income on my tax return, but I don't want to get involved in other band members' tax affairs.
Who asked you for that? I'd be wary. -
I see what you did there... Alas, flat-arse syndrome is very common in my family... a bit like having a "two pack" on the wrong side of your body.
...and now we're doing Buttchat! TMI. I recently did an Open Mic at Derby's Horse and Groom with a few friendly people to dip my toe in the water, so to speak. I'd now like to take a little swim. I am offering to learn tunes for people based in or very close to Spondon or Derby city who need a bassist for minor events such as Open Mic with a view to gaining experience. You might have a specific date to aim for or perhaps you just want to jam and see where it goes from there. I am willing to share costs for rehearsal room fees. I am available during week days too. Ultimately I would like to find myself in a modest little band that can practice within range of my wallet since I have to use taxis when I can't get my mate to drive me. The aim would be to play local venues and eventually break even on costs. Ta
I bypassed the issue by going solo. Then basically got head hunted for my vurrent gig.
As a singing bassist? That is something I may have to work on for myself.
Synth bass? Aaaaaaargh! Picture me grabbing a pair of ornate Church candlesticks and using them to make a cross ...
Sorry. I thought I was doing everyone a favour by saying synth instead of keys. Self help groups are available. Oh, Regards to you both!
It doesn't turn completely face-down but tilts away from me. Is your neck strap button in the standard place? Mind you, it was an awfully long time ago when I had a B2 but I don't remember that having the same issue as the B2V/B2AV.
Yes. I haven't modified anything. Perhaps my massive gut helps. I hang the axe so's my fret hand is about shoulder level in first position and the paddle shaped body rests on my belly button to stop it catching fluff.
I think it's funny that some many of us have got so used to the idea that the neck of a bass (or guitar) will be finished natural rather than matching the rest of the instrument that a matching headstock (and only the front) is something unusual!
Isn't it written somewhere in The Big Book of British Tradition that rock bands will have a Fender of some description underpinning the rhythm whilst providing a frame for the melody? I think the addendum says that you can not be serious unless there is a Fender on stage. I could name other brands so don't think Fender are the only brand that bores me. Other opinions are available.
If I tried a new bass in a shop that went head down on a strap I'd put it back without plugging it in, that said I dont think I've ever tried a bass on a strap in a shop, luckily all the Thunderbirds and Rickenbackers I tried were dogged with other faults so I never got that far, they look nice though
I doubt that many of us do. It isn't often that I go out with the intention of looking at instruments in a shop but when I'm out and about, I make time for it if I see one. I thought of asking for a strap once or twice but I know from experience that new straps need breaking in and just trying to fit one can cause problems resulting in accidental damage to the instrument so I don't. Given that I don't play sat down at all, I can't really assess what I'm trying out very well. Just well enough to give me an idea if whether I'd pick it out of a line up again. If I was shelling out for an instrument I'd make an exception and have a proper old go with a strap of my own before committing.
Fair enough - was only making the suggestion that ths was something that may need looking into - obviously it has. Then again, some people love the thwacky, clanky sound of the plastic board on the Squier VMJ, so it may well come down to taste.
You made a fair point. Having never played a metal fingerboard I don't know but I suspect it would be okay with nylon flats.
-
Must I? I'm not. It's because the centre of gravity is well forward of the neck strap pin location.
You said - "...to stop it turning face-down." Strange, mine hangs with no issues apart from the slight neck dive.
Hah. That brings to mind our singer's flute performance. Oh - where do I get a remote bubble blower?
A good old drink of Fairy Liquid to chase down some of Dr Windbreaker's Magic Salts should do the trick... just give it a good half hour before you're due to perform. Oh and have a large bucket on standby. -
YEEEEESSSSSSSS! Don't get me wrong, the other stuff is all well and good but metalflake is proper lush. Tell me it will have a matching headstock! Please!
Yup headstock and all. When I say metalflake I mean the deep translucent lacquer finish that allows for large gold flake to be used for maximum scatter. None of your flat tat finishes, oh no. Glad you like the idea. Regards
I've been looking at Basslab instruments for a while now. http://basslab.de They build using their own recipe "tuneable composite" materials layered over a form which is later removed, leaving a hollow body (and neck!). They use automotive paint and lacquers even on fretless basses, where the fretboard is also often painted.
That's very interesting. Thanks. You can't say it leans on conventional thinking from first glance anyway.
The Cinema Show by Genesis. Start with solo acoustic 12-string guitar, tuned dDgGaDeGbbee (ie non-unison pairs on the middle two pairs, E and E pairs down a full step). Add bass pedals after a couple of minutes. Frantic triplet picking in the middle bit. Fade out, unplug, switch to double-neck Shergold. Instrumental in 7/8, switch to bass (finally) for the last few seconds.
I tend to put a demo of any of my songs onto soundcloud in case of any copyright issues then register it with the PRS, not sure if this covers all the basses (see what I did there ) or not
Until you pointed it out - no. Heeheehee. Regards
