1. Thanks mate! I am tempted to do so, the low action seems great. Do you know how the PS1 electronics will sound on it?
2. that basscentre replica is nowhere near a Frank in my opinion. Yep Ben you're correct, could give some credence to the extra bark that Slabs had, as John used the same Hiwatt rig for IoW as he did for Leeds, but used a stock P bass. Then again that was a rosewood neck, could explain the warmer tone
3. I'm thinking if potentially modding my squire affinity, with a status neck for low action and fast playing, and PS1 electronics, as they seem similar to thr fender tone and vol. I was also going to install curtis novak pickups Anyone used status necks and the PS1 electronics?
4. what do the electronics sound like? Are they similar to a standard precision vol and tone, or do they do a lot more?
5. Is that PS1 electronics on the status matrix?
6. I've played one of John Entwistle's actual slab. Definitely has a bark to it, but a lot of it is how you play I guess, but in my opinion they've got something over other P basses at the time
7. ahhhhhh I was looking for this book over the weekend! Damn
8. Interesting! I use open strings a lot, especially in WGFA. Even in normal basslines I use them even where they wouldn't make musical sense, just to fatten up a line. But I guess whatever you're most comfortable with goes
9. sounds amazing, have fun! How much would a trip like this set you back?
10. they're fantastic, its a shame these bloody hipsters have tarred their rep somewhat by claiming to be fans - although I guess most of basschat wouldn't have noticed that
11. wasn't Fleetwood Mac's Albatross used in M&S adverts?
12. great idea! John Entwistle - massive inspiration, only reason I started playing Paul McCartney - really love his melodic lines, studying them teaches you a lot! Jack Casady - I love the way he plays, so much groove I don't really have a 4 or 5 to be honest, I like Jack Bruce, the few stuff I know of Chris Squire. Bill Wyman I quite like too, but the household names you get on these forums like Stanley Clarke, Mark King etc I just haven't heard enough, so I don't want to chuck them in for the sake of it. I haven't paid enough individual attention to other bassists, which I ought to, I'll like one or two lines from Andy Fraser as an example, but I wouldn't have studied him enough to give an informed opinion like I can about someone like Entwistle
13.
I usually don't like Isolated Bass videos but that is one of the best I've seen. Great rock tone. Very similar indeed to a tone I've recently discovered and currently using. Through various trades part ex's against basses recently I've ended up with 5 amps (!) (.....luckily using one for band pa too) so have been experimenting with Bi Amping - I've got a great rock tone with an EBS Reidmar for the clean signal and an EBS CL450 for the dirty signal - great tone, never been happier with my rig, Genz Shuttle 6 also covers the dirty signal very effectively as well. Sounds great and really fills out my 4 piece band. I do think you need a clean / dirty blend to get a good overdriven rock sound without loosing the bottom end. Will have to make time to watch the Clinic (not usually a fan of 'name' clinics - please tell me it's worth an hour investing in a watch?
nice, would love to hear your rig! In my opinion its worth it, especially if you're a fan of him and The Who. It's a lot of Q&A with some interesting anecdotes. In terms of playing, he just jams on his own, but to a very high standard obviously, suppose you could learn by watching. He doesn't teach anything in a normal sesne
14.
Never seen this Clinic before,Very interesting. https://youtu.be/f-w20dp42oE
it is! Amazing how he switches from pick to fingers in the way he does
15. absolutely incredible! Superb work, its always a delight to see amazing individual basses like this. Excellent craftsmanship, bet it sounds and plays like a beaut!
16.
I spent a LOT of money of a custom fretless neck from Warmoth and not only was it not built to specification, their customer service department was characterised by "We know what we are doing, if you don't think the neck is fit for purpose, both you and the very well know UK bass builder who inspected it and wrote a report can take a hike". I sent the neck back to them - at my own expense - and they returned it to me saying they couldn't see any problem other than that I was too fussy. For a total of £600 for a neck I think I'm allowed to be fussy. I don't judge a manufacturer only by what they produce 95% of the time, but by how they deal with the 5% that goes wrong. In this respect Warmoth are THE worst bass-related company I have dealt with, demonstrating both lack of respect for their customers as well as a complete lack of knowledge about bass necks generally.
that's a real shame! You'd expect better for £600, can go to Sims for that much!
17. sounds like the event was a success! Glad to hear it!
18.
Don't know Musikcraft but Sims is reknown for being top draw. I know he can scan necks if you have a profile you are used to and can use as a reference. He may be expensive but IME, you get what you pay for.
thanks! Yeah I tend to agree, you certainly do get what you pay for. I've used one of his necks before and it was incredible, that and Alan's ACG necks are the best I've used
19. Hi guys I'm looking to embark on a project (I am by no means building this myself) by making a Precision bass. The neck is to be two piece maple, ideally with a fast neck. Do any of you guys have any words of wisdom regarding the aforementioned companies? Anything I ought to look out for etc? Would be good if you had an opinion on them all. I'm looking for quality here, so although you could say that Sims is the most expensive etc. but what I'm after, is the highest quality! Now, this is all opinion of course, but I'd be interested to hear what you guys have to offer Any other suggestions are welcome! Thanks Taran
20.
He does a good job with The Seeker though.
he does on this tbf! The last time I saw The Who at the SSE/Wembley Arena, I was fairly close, on his side too, couldn't hear him so much, but then again thats probably just Pete letting go!
