1. don't think I can make it tomorrow hope everyone has a great time!
 2. he's fantastic. Doesn't quite fit The Who when I see them, but which bassist nowadays does? He's great in his own right, top work with Paul Simon is what sticks out to me
 3.
I reckon tbest Tele Bass is G&L Asat Bass http://www.glguitars...-bass/index.asp It has awesome array of tones, covering P, J & MM, but it definitely has its own sound that sits extremely well in any situation. Beautiful J-type necks too
never seen that before, looks cool! It'd look cooler with precision pickups, but then again it wouldn't cover nearly as many tones. The large poles just don't look as nice for me, but looks amazing! How much do they go for?
 4. apologies, I won't be able to carry out the task
 5.
In the Herts area lemonrock is a good website for finding bands. I've personally steered clear of jam nights as I find them more for self-obsessed guitarists, particularly in blues, though I would love to be proven wrong. Other than the sites if you're in Herts pop in to the practice roomz in Stevenage and look at their noticeboard, or the Farm Factory in Welwyn GC. There's always a load of "bassist wanted" ads in there, and it is likely to have been put up by a band that is using the rehearsal space, so not necessarily dreamers doing nothing, and you can ask the guys in the rehearsal space whether they're a serious bunch or not
thats a good idea cheers, I used to practice there so will have another look!
Once upon a time there was an open mic night there on Thursday nights - I finished up as the house band bassist. The guy who originally ran it stopped, but I think it's still going in some form.
oh wow! How was that experience? They run it on Mondays now I think
 6.
Just out of interest does anyone use joinmyband and is it a worthwhile tool for finding a band? (Finding it hard in my new area)
it is yeah! You might have to send of a fair few messages to get something however
 7. http://www.coda-music.com/fender-custom-shop-masterbuilt-slab-body-closet-classic-bass-pink-paisley-p-23548.html?oscsid=8f31f64fabac0b34c145352435abf814 tried this today, only 10 min drive from my house. I wasn't a fan of the amp, the bass played nicely but the tone was a bit dull for me
 8.
Definitely, I've had 2 precisions converted to P/J recently (one Squier CV, and one Fender RW) The Squier CV has a PBXN and JBXN, and it sounds huge. The RW has a JBXN and the stock Fender P pickup The CV definitely has that bit more bite, and I'll be changing the P pickup on the RW soon I really like Entwistle pickups - they're fab for the money. They sound great, and still retain a classic "vintage" type sound too If they were twice the price, they'd still be amazing value IMO PS. Don't tell them I said that Also, as someone else already said, the delivery service on ebay was brilliant I ordered 3 pickups, on separate occasions, and they all turned up 2 days later
Thats what i like to hear, a huge p bass sound on a squire affinity. Think I'll do the same!
 9.
Think I would be tempted to go with Fender 62 custom shop pups.
yep, these are great
I used a Norstrand NP4 on a bitsa which was ok but for some sort of aggressive thing in the high mid to top range which I found myself trying to EQ out somewhat unsuccessfully. I let a local outfit by the name of Tonefinder have a listen to see what he thought and he suggested a change of cap value and the fitting of a treble bleed on the volume pot which I agreed to. The change it made was surprising to say the least definition improved no end the aggressive top thing gone more punch all in all major improvement. I guess what I am trying to say is you may not need new pups it might be that the change you want is in the cap, pots, pickup height/ action adjustments for less cost and of course undo able if you change your mind
I really want to try these! What are they like at full treble?
 10. nice one Mick, I might be of help, quite unlikely but I let him know in case I am
 11. I live very near to the Herts Bash location, and there might be a chance I will be travelling west sometime after. I should have some update on this tomorrow! Its looking much more unlikely I am, but there is a small, small chance I might be so I'll let you know Please PM me incase I forget too
 12. paid a quick visit to guitar guitar in Birmingham today, great shop. They've got some American Standards in with custom shop pickups, the Precision was amazing, so much treble!
 13.
Got a feeling it was about 1977. Remember travelling up from Brighton to London with a mate. Slept all the way due to my hangover. Desperately needed the bog when we got into the ground. Everywhere was flooded due to heavy rain. Facilities at The Valley back then were pretty third world to put it kindly. Found out too late that there was no loo roll. Only piece of paper in my jeans was my ticket! Despite all that it was a fantastic day
haha what a story!
its unbelievable the amount of variations he puts in
indeed, he really developed his playing style - fast forward a few years and he had that typewriter technique as well! Although its hear as well, kind of
 14. haha it was indeed a big mistake! Great thanks, if I'm on track with work I'll make an appearance!
 15. love this video, sensational! No one will ever truly replicate this level of playing. Carries the whole song, you don't even have to know the song inside out to see which part he's playing. Was that the Charlton gig were it was the loudest concert ever recorded? Or was that the mid 70s one? Must have been an amazing show!
 16. have you heard of Tim Allen? He does very good pickguards and is highly regarded
 17. Can you decide on the day if you can turn up?
 18.
Blues jams will be great for that... I've not been involved in them, but from the ones I've seen it looks like the bandleader just calls a key sig or a chord progression and a feel then off you all go. cheers Rob! Thats what I was mainly looking for, good to see I that they do exist and I didn't just imagine such scenarios

There used to be a blues club/jam night at the Roadhouse in Birmingham, once a month on a Thursday I think. It might still be around? Maybe play along to some backing tracks in the meantime? I find it helps me keep on top of my improv whilst i'm not rehearsing or gigging. QuistJam is pretty good, he's a pro musician who creates tracks in his free time. There's a few videos in lots of different genres without basslines. I play 'em through trying to create a line on the fly and then throw in some craziness. Obviously you won't get the dynamic you get when playing with other people but I find it helps. https://www.youtube.com/user/QuistTV I've always found that structured practice has helped my playing more than anything so YMMV.
thanks mate, yeah I've heard of the Roundhouse actually, I'll look into it! I used to use backing tracks, think its an area I might revist. You're right in terms of practice, will help to get a bit more structure
There's quite a lively blues jam scene in Glasgow. No help for your main question, but I've found it a really great way to meet other players and find out what playing/depping opportunities there are, and finding people to play with. My blues/rock and roll three piece found our current drummer at one. It's a great environment for scouting potential bandmates/bands/replacements because you can actually hear them play before you approach them (and they can hear you). Saves a ton of time, hassle and mis-matches. Good luck.
thats decent! I'd like to see others play and fit in a variety of situations, its a shame actually as I was applying for an internship up in Scotland!
Hey Taran The UoH has a"jam night" once a month I believe - mostly people turning up with acoustic guitars and doing Oasis numbers - you might want to check the Students Union who might know a bit more..
oohh thanks Mick, might have a look! Worth checking in you're right
 19.
My playing really improved from being out gigging 2-3 times a week. Practicing and then having the opportunitie to perform in front of an audience is a winning combination. Blue
think you're right, my playing took off when I started playing in a band too. I'll try to get back into this, but blues type jam nights seem a good way of being able to improvise live
Check out RK music's website http://www.rkmusic.co.uk/jam-nights/. These guys used to attract reasonable interest when they had the night at the Middlesex Arms (now cancelled). A bit too blues based for me but plenty of solo guitarists, bass players and the occasional skin beater. Seems they are looking for a permanent home at the mo. Bit of a trek from Letchworth though.
cheers Nicko! Yeah it is, I may be working in London which is why I included London in the post will have a look!
I assume we're talking about a jam night where everyone gets up and plays a few tunes with people they've not met before, as opposed to an open mic where everyone plays a few songs of their own material?
sorta like that, aren't the blues ones sorta based on getting up there an improvising? Thats what I'm looking to do as a side to develop more range in my playing
 20. Anyone recommend any in particular for classic rock / blues? Would definitely be interested. I want to improve my on the spot playing
 21. very true, it is a waste, perhaps I worded it wrong. I'll get back to looking for bands!
