1. I think with JMB its best to keep the original advert to the point and to cut unnecessary detail, you'll get more replies that way as opposed to something more specific. Having said that I'd only remove the zany and childish part, everything else is fine
2.
Never got the whole bushy beard thing. Why do these young guys go out of their way to look old. Your only young once. Blue
agreed, its al the rage to have a beard and either a top knot or a Essex haircut. I am the only guy in most of my friendship groups to have long hair and be clean shaven
3. Agreed on The Who, i think The Who Sell Out would have been even better had they released the extras as a double album I switched off Exile In Main Street after a while, couldn't get into it. This was years back mind you, will have to revist it. What are your thoughts on this album? I prefer Sticky Fingers and Let it Bleed personally
4. well in mate!
5.
During the intro riff to Summertime Blues on Leeds, JE hits a massive open E instead of a D. A balls-up but still one I feel obliged to copy whenever we cover it. Also, in the IOW set, JE's backing vocals are a bit eccentric during I Don't Even Know Myself.
I love his backing vocals in I Dont Even Know Myself, you'd all expect him to do his falsetto, he sings over Roger on it, makes it quite good I think!
6.
I recently picked up a mk2 in a charity shop in Nottingham. Easily my luckiest find. Mk3s are rare but Mk2s are almost in unicorn territory. Arguably even harder to find than mk1s
lucky you!! How much?
7.
'tis a great live album, though, isn't it? (I think my mother still has an original copy on vinyl!) There's a few live performances from the late '60s/'70s that are great in spite of the bum notes or forgotten lyrics - The Who at Leeds and the IoW I can almost listen out for the mistakes these days, and Deep Purple's Made in Japan is a great "warts and all" recording. Nice to hear bands jamming a bit rather than just repeating all the songs verbatim.
Any standout mistakes in particular from leeds or IoW?
8. When i saw The Who a couple of weeks ago Roger sang the wrong verse in The Kids Are Alright, but just carried on, laughing at his mistake Suppose Keith made a mistake at Cow Palace too a few years back
9. Easier to get into a band being a bassist!
10. How would you go about defining it? Yoy could potentially say The Who Sell Out as its structured like a pirate radio station Boy by U2 had a clear theme of adolescence. Do concept albums have to tell a story?
11. The Who again
12.
That looks great fun. I want to see someone standing and playing an ACG - I can't image how they look on a strap.
they look cool! I've got a krell which has a similar horn, and i love the way it looks! It looks quite meaty when your holding it, kidna got that Casady vibe the way he hold his bass nice bass btw! GLWTS
13. everyone seems to play slap at some point nowadays, well at least whenever I see people play bass they do. Am I they only one who doesn't?
14. Interesting comments, each to their own i guess, but especially with bass i feel that its best played with others as opposed to on your own, that's why gigs is the apex for me. I think its been answered that uploading youtube videos etc is becoming increasingly popular Ps i like the stones
15.
I am the biggest Jeff Beck fan there is. However, I would not have wanted him in The Stones. I don't think he's happy enough to be in the Stones, not to mention his styling would probably clash with Keith's. Ron Wood was the perfect match, I don't think the fans ever questioned their choice. Blue
Yeah agreed i don't think they quite match. I would have found it interesting to see how Jeff would have theoretically adapted to the Stones and how it would pan out. As all geeat musicians should be able to play with each other
16. good responses! Entwistle will always be my fave, but I'm finding it really interesting listening to Squire, trying to learn off them both. My pick technique has improved at least! Anyone know how to pick the way Squire does it? I can't hit the thumb on the strings properly, perhaps because its never been used before
17. how would you compare the two styles?
18. It would have been interesting if Jeff Beck had joined the Stones. I wonder how it would have mixed, not sure Keith would be keen on it
19. I'm not trying to turn this into a heated debate over who's definitively better, I'm curious as to what you guys think, would definitely teach me a thing or two about bass playing Who's playing do you prefer and why?
20. Anyone evver used these on bass? https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10205822967756684&set=gm.893228907458741&type=3&theater
21.
The B120 is essentially the same as my L120 Mk IV. The active tone controls on the Mk IV amps each have a preamp valve, which makes them very sensitive. Once I realised this, I was able to get a good tone since I realised only small tweaksof the controls could dramatically alter the sound. The L100 is a rarer model though, so unless the B120 is being sold at a temptingly lower price then I'd go for that.
Cheers! Interesting point about the active controls
22.
Yup, I could never get a decent sound out of the 120 either. Took it to a tech and had it all revalved and recapped etc and still couldn't get a decent tone at any real volume.
interesting, cheers! Pushing me towards the L100, John did use them after all
23.
Having owned Sound city 100s, 120s and a 200 watt head, a long time ago I have to admit, The volume of the 120s and 200 is immense, however the active EQ made it impossible to get, in my opinion, a good sound. The Sound City 100, while still certainly loud enough, with its passive EQ made getting a great sound easy. Just like a Hiwatt really and I've had a few of those as well for comparison. For me the choice would be easy, the L100 but I'm sure others would be of a different opinion. Hope this helps.
thank you! Very sound advice, appreciate it!
24. I've got a gig the weekend after, if I'm not rehearsing then I'm down for this! I'll bring along my ACG Krell E type - there's a sound demo on the ACG thread (shameless plugin I know)
25.
Yep! 6 gloriously glowing EL34s and some ecc80 somethings.
its a tough call! What would you go for?
