mainly John Entwistle. Other reasons include women, easier to get into a band, and two less strings to worry about

Here Comes Your Man by The Pixies is pretty good always liked Monkey Man by the Stones too, very simple but sets the tone for the song, and also sums up the mood of the album too
Brilliant synopsis of the key eras of the Fender P! It's only in the last couple of years that I've come to appreciate the humble p-bass having spent the best part of 20 years before that deriding them as boring and unsophisticated (even referring to them as scaffolding planks with wires nailed on)! Loving precisions these days of course but a bit late to the party so a reference like this, all in one place, is really interesting and useful, thanks!
I echo your sentiments, there's a reason why they're the industry standard! I posted this question because you see so many Fenders for sale on here all with different dates and prices, I just thought someone on here could explain for people who aren't quite as clued up on Fenders (like me) what Fender does what - the responses have been excellent!
There is no BEST. Please let's not do this.
the whole message of my thread was pros and cons of each one as opposed to 'best', which I shouldnt have put in the title (and tried to correct by saying it was subjective but thanks for the other feedback! Its what I was hoping for, cheers
-
thank you everyone for your input! Some great answers!

There are so many Fenders up for sale on this site and they've been going strong since the 50s, is there a thread comparing different eras of Fender P basses? There are so many for sale, you tend to get swamped and I for one don't really know what Fenders are the better ones, I hear 70s models are highly regarded, but I could (probably will be) completely wrong I know its subjective too, but can anyone summarize the pros and cons of each generation of Fenders? (10 marks) Thanks Taran
Hell no, I actually saw a movie about how seriously and crazy they get about soccer. I'd be afraid someone would kick my arse. Blue
hahaha, they're just plain annoying! There are far more violent fans out there however
-
if you do visit Liverpool mate be sure not to talk about football (or soccer to you)... you won't hear the end of it
Chris Squire is no kind of household name. Even most of the musicians I play with wouldn't know who he is.
fair enough - perhaps just from my experience quite a few people know him - however taking into account what I think household means to the OP, then he probably isn't
-
Are you serious?
please elaborate
-
Jack Casady a household name? Are you insane? At best a small percentage of people might think he was a member of the Partridge Family.
was thinking more on the maybe list.
-
Chris Squire also?
-
ahh I was gonna chime in with Entwistle obviously haha perhaps Roger Waters, Brian Wilson and Jack Casady? The first two are probably better known as the brains of their bands however
-
yeah I thought as much, the youtube comments threw me off! cheers

Hi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9EPkKNiJ10 in this track, is the steel pedal guitar the sound you hear as the first chorus begins at around 0:41? Taran

Who do you prefer vocally - The Who or The Beatles?

Yeah it is haha, I'd say the other 3 were excellent vocalists however -
If you want to compare harmonies, listen to the Who playing surfer music, they are pretty unreal......
Keith can hit the high notes in Barbara Ann alright! In fact, Pictures of Lily is a great one where all 4 are singing at once https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeOxr7gB8HA -

haha yep Norris it is unusual, the question just came up in my head so thought I'd ask ahah Steve Marriot is class Tommy played live made for a great concert, it certainly overshadows the studio version. I just don't think the Beatle's singing evokes as much emotion as The Who, Daltrey gives it his all on every track - agreed he's more suited to rock and The Beatles being better suited to pop -

I think another point to consider in favour od The Who is live vocals. I've neber really heard them have an off day vocals wise, and nailed it when i saw them in July. Credit to Roger who gets through those shows given the way he sings does take its toll! (Hes had quite a bit of trouble recently with his voice i think). Whereas someone like Jagger isn't always great live! (Still great nevertheless) -
The Beatles win hands down on this. From the early stuff like This Boy and Here There and Everywhere to the later stuff like Because and You never Give me your Money, the harmonies send a shiver down the spine.
Their harmonies are very impressive I agree! -
Hah, I can beat that claim to fame My stepmum used to manage their official fan club back in the late 60s through into the 70s and still speaks to Roger Daltrey on the phone occasionally. She also has everything they released on vinyl up until Keith's death signed by the whole band! Her old photo albums are pretty impressive too and she really knows how to name drop. I remember when I played a CD of my band's first recording to my dad many years ago, she came through from the kitchen when our version of 20th Century Boy came on and just came out with "I know that one, it's T-Rex. Marc Bolan was one of my best friends"!
That's insane! Do you get to meet these guys? Hook a fellow BC'er up -
The Beatles! Paul's voice is just so much YES! 'Oh Darling' springs to mind. The dynamics in that song are fabulous. For the record I also absolutely love The Who. Moony used to own the pub I drink in back in the 60's!
nice one! is that the one down the road from Tara house? -

think I used the multiquote function a bit wrong there perhaps I should've said you don't need a favourite, but its interesting to compare I'd disagree when you put Ringo's vocal capabilities on par with Pete's! Townshend can evoke far more emotion, not that Ringo's songs were built for that. But even on the ear Pete has one of the best voices I've heard (my personal taste and opinion, no facts)
