1. A little smattering of Beggs, Iona and Wal bass for your Sunday night listening pleasure... http://youtu.be/Oz4tSq7muWU http://youtu.be/QZCoc-aIRe4 And a touch of stick too... http://youtu.be/0nKiOCLcnMU
2. Very very, much cop! He played some stunning bass and stick on the early Iona albums too.
3. Quite possibly. The open book headstock shape isn't quite like a typical early 80s shape. The ends are a bit pointy. Some sort of late 80s or early 90s reissue? Whatever, it's a lovely bass!
4. Looks to me to be either an SB-R80 or SB Elite II. Maybe more likely the latter. The SB range featured the following initially... SB600 (single pickup set neck), SB700 (single pickup thru neck), SB900 (two pickup thru neck), SB1000 (single pickup, active circuit, thru neck) The R series sort of mirrored this but with a wider bridge and string spacing. The SB-80 was the equivalent of the SB900. The R series featured the distinctive "eye" dot markers whereas the SBs had simple dots. http://gfyfe.com/sbr80.htm http://www.matsumoku.org/models/ariaproii/bass/sb/sb.html The SB Elites came along layter as a sort of simplified SB range. The SB Elite II was the twin pickup model... http://gfyfe.com/sbeliteii.htm Across each model range and across time the fine details varied... The bat ear or book headstock, round or tear drop pick up selectors, recessed or flat Jack sockets, single or stack knobs so it can be confusing to tie a model down sometimes.
5. Here is my lovely SB700 from 1983. It was my first ever bass, bought for me by my mum and dad for my 18th birthday. Still love it, even if it doesn't get out much any more...
6.
artistic licence dear boy (that and the logo/branding potential of H+H...
And you can get a nice cup of coffee while listening to the band...
7. Never seen that before. How stunning! Wow!
8. For me it would have to be... Geddy Lee (I love so many things about Rush but Geddy's playing on the albums between 1980 and 1995 is just sublime for me) Phil Lynott (probably my fave band and if I had to choose he would be equal first with Geddy) Abraham Laboriel (first got into him through his Christian jazz/funk band, Koinonia, and then discovered he had played on a whole other range of tunes I loved) Kelly Groucutt (from ELO. Been such a fan of the band since the mid 70s and Kelly's playing has given me so much enjoyment over that time) Barry Devlin (from Horslips. Another band I have loved since they first released The Tain back in the 70s. Again, he's on the list on the basis of the amount of joy his playing has given me over the years) Honourable mentions (& should really be on that top five list too...): Chris Squire, Lee Sklar, John Gustafson, John G Perry, Neil Murray, John Wetton, Jamerson/Babbitt/Dunn... the list goes on...
9.
I, too, am absolutely amazed that this has not been dealt with via the police. You know the guys name, you know the area in which he lives, the three local shops know him. What's the problem? The choice is simple:
The same thing does strike me. The rap sheet piling up seems now to include theft, attempting to sell stolen goods and, for whoever's address he used for the delivery, handling stolen goods. Now with witnesses in local shops attached... I'd be amazed if the local rozzers didn't take some notice. Sounds like a nice slam dunk crime stat filler...
10.
Pino also played on US Artist Don Henley's solo albums.
Oh yes, I'd forgotten it was Pino on New York Minute. Fantastic playing.
11. Nick, given one of the very special guests do you mind if I plug ther Bash on the Facebok Wal page again (along with an encouragement to join in the forum fun too)? Cheers. Oh, and Bumpitty Bump...
12.
Hello and welcome from a few stops up the line into Waterloo
Hello there too from another few stops up the Waterloo-Reading line or up the A308 depending on how you look at it. While I'm here since there's a load of local bods I'll just put in a plug for the Basschat SE Bass Bash in September. A really great event, a chance to noodle on a huge range of basses, a chance to meet some more Basschatters and the guests this year are beyond amazing. Make it a priority in your diaries!
13.
Is it any good for 'Meddle' ?
Brilliant! Hat duly doffed.
14. If you ignore the playing of Mick Karn with Japan Pino was practically the sound of UK pop fretless in the 1980s and has provided consummate bass lines a host of artists tunes since then. But those Paul Young fretless lines are what brought him to the notice of many and they still send shivers down my spine.
15.
I think the J-Retro is so compact the battery can go under the control plate, so no need to route a hole for a battery compartment. Not sure if many other preamps can do the same, so worth bearing in mind if you want to be able to revert it back to stock unharmed!
Same with the Audere. Designed to have the battery in the control cavity with the circuit.
16. Or slot in an Audere preamp. They come pre mounted on a replacement jazz style control plate. Lovely, versatile, musical active circuit. Lots of great tones in there and a distinct lack of unusable, over cooked ones. https://www.audereaudio.com/pro_jz3.htm
17. You should also look at the Lehle 3@1 pedal. It has three channels that switch into one output (several outs but one signal from all of them). The second and third channels have internal trim pots that allow you to balance the volumes of the three channels. I used one of t here pedals for exactly the purpose you describe, balancing my two Wal basses, when I was gigging in the covers band. It is not cheap but is a quality bit of kit, totally transparent but providing a buffered output, totally silent switching and build like a brick outhouse. Oh, and probably irrelevant for us but all channels run in either mono or stereo! http://lehle.com/EN/ABC-Switcher
18.
The output of a bass, any bass passive or active does not have enough power to drive a pair of headphones so you need a small amplifier to provide that power.
Those Vox headphones are the only things I've ever seen that directly answer your question. However the deeper amswer is as Dave said, "normal" phones are passive and require some sort of an amp to work. Therefore with 99% you can't just plug them in. The Vox has a built in amp. The next question then is, give they are designed to emulate an electric guitar amp, how well will they work for the lower frequencies produced by basses?
19. Was that the one posted up on FB the other day? Neck thru. Looked nice esp for the price.
20. Any such connectors I've had have always been a bit cheap and untrustworthy. This sounds like a job for OBBM and his Rock Wire service http://bassic-bits.co.uk to make a longer lead or an extension lead with good quality bits. Alternatively, Cleartone Cables by Award Session do similarly made custom odd cables...
21. Are you on Facebook? The Wal group there often flags up Wals that come up. I mod it and it's a nice, friendly bunch. The link is here... https://www.facebook.com/groups/2413094311/?ref=ts&fref=ts
22. Speaking of Camden, it boasts my fave London venue, Green Note. Great atmosphere and lovely staff. Americana, folk and blues rather than jazz but highly recommended.
23. It is one of the two things that always rankle when I look at Limelight basses (alongside the relicing - not my thing) where they have a Fender rather than Limelight logo. Having a Fender sticker on the headstock would personally dissuade me rather than attract me. I'd rather have a nicely designed manufacturer logo and let the bass, it's sound and its build quality speak for itself.
24. Will you still be around in September? Coz you're only a few stops down the line from the Basschat South East Bass Bash! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/283248-south-east-bass-bash-no10-surrey-saturday-24th-september-2016/
25. Of course the colour of the bin doesn't actually affect what you are supposed to put into it. Sorry if that offends but it's just science!!
