1.
Rolf Harris plating a stylophone? I'd pay money to see that.
Oh lordy.....
 2. Yes, lovely player and appreciated in the classical circles as well. Not really known for his Sax playing though. Brother, Ronnie Laws is known for that Instrument. (Sorry for getting away from the Jazz Funk Vibe). Love his version of 'Feel Like Makin' Love'. Full of emotion. http://youtu.be/Z8-AWlZSA50 'Sophisticated Lady' as a duo, lovely. http://youtu.be/XFb34HF4xpw
 3.
Adam Clayton.........apparently talentless? Mark King.......sounds like a bag of spanners? Matt Bellamy......nods his head funny!! Jaco Pastorius....Sounds like someone making comedy fart noises with their armpit
Had to fix that for you Barney. You had Jaco in the wrong camp.
 4.
I'm not too good on emoticons, so I took it as meaning to laugh at my "ignorance". As to the spelling, my auto-correct seems to think I'm more likely to talk about murderous athletes than a bass player ...
I did mention that, but I deleted, due to my bad taste.
 5.
It's a weird one. Yesterday I described why I didn't like a particular Jaco Pistorius bass part, and was called "ignorant". I didn't comment on the man, or the rest of his work, but apparently having an opinion makes me ignorant. Oh well.
What Dad said in the above post. On the other hand, spell Jaco's surname right, and such a "sly dig in the ribs" might be avoided. All light hearted of course and no offence intended.
 6. Why do people who dislike/hate certain artists/players, then spend days hanging around a thread about players they dislike/hate? Wouldn't it be better to go and listen to someone you don't dislike/hate? (and that, more than likely, means most of us).
 7. Some Philly. http://youtu.be/aiX-BE9uyVg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxLCIsbmnUU We have gotta have'Shaft' http://youtu.be/xbXvdJF-1U8
 8.
I've listened to that album hundreds of times and I NEVER tire of it, Masterpiece!
Yes, brilliant. I presume you have heard the live Orchestral album ? Vince Mendoza and his terrific arrangements. Personally I only stumbled upon it last year. Not sure how I missed it to be honest. Sublime version of 'Hejira' http://youtu.be/yt50Te9RriI
 9.
yes yes yes.. Im quite sure i said in the op its a great tune, point was ive never listened closely. To be fair, the general masses are unlikley to deconstruct songs in the way a musician does and will likely take most on earshot as a while peace. But for the musician, who cannot help but listen without isolating parts or focusing on particular bits, it was a bit like waking up next to a kronenburg bird the morning after..... You know 1664..... "She looked 16 from behind but when she turned around......."
Excellent.
 10.
I guess one of the undisputed giants of bass accompanying one of the greatest poets that ever picked up a guitar is not for everyone...
Indeed. Just been listening to 'Hejira'. A poster on YouTube summed up Jaco's playing on that track perfectly "The heavy use of 5th's and 9th's in the melody give the song an airiness to it. Add the major 7th's and you have a recipe for beauty. Jaco-you are the finest.". http://youtu.be/5AfPR_B8s-A
 11.

Was Keni Burke playing Bass on this ? I know he was a Bassist as well as a producer. Great playing.
 12. The Spanish Hustle. Nice Bass and some serious pea soup hi-hat going on. Another rich Orchestration. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgRRnqJehhU
 13. A good cover. Nice Bass break in the middle 02:50. Bass player is Neil Jason, who was quite a busy first call studio player at the time. https://www.discogs.com/artist/242994-Neil-Jason Interview with him. http://forbassplayersonly.com/interview-neil-jason/ http://youtu.be/2qLofXDO_PI
 14. ^^^ Yep, very true. He also had a beautiful, emotional side to his playing. 'A remark You Made', being a good example.
 15.
Sometimes it's better to just walk away from a post.
Or feel like you have just walked into one.
Don't forget that this forum is populated by a self-selected set of bass fans,
And a Drummer, don't forget that Drummer.
 16. Remember getting that Brian Melvin album first time around. (Some good tracks on it). I still feel the same, loved the Bass playing on the OP track, but Lordy, that drum groove lets it all down, so mechanical.
Each to his own i always find Rocco one of the best and tightest groove players ,and probably the biggest influence on Jaco's groove ! http://youtu.be/puY2_cRLMbQ
Agreed. Rocco is a groove monster.
 17. Stylus RMX users (that will be me and Dad then). One hour, forty four minutes and forty four seconds of tutorial videos from PluginGuru. 'Stylus RMX Tutorials ALL IN ONE MOVIE (remastered)' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCDkKSRkb9s
 18. SCORE - Film Music Documentary. I thought this might interest some of you. Should be out very soon. EDIT: Sorry posted wrong link earlier (although that was good as well). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bre2ut0gv4I&feature=youtu.be
 19. For those who like a good read - Even more stuff on the debate. (along with a load of Jamerson stuff). http://www.bassland.net/jamerson.html#drlicks
 20. A nice collection of good sounding Kontakt Instruments. Low prices as well. http://www.loopsdelacreme.com/kontakt-libraries/
 21.
The Prom before was Bernard Haitink conducting the LSO for Mahler 3, which was brilliant. Presumably that is up on iplayer too, and is well worth a look if you're into that sort of thing, the cameras were shooting it. LD
Yes, on iPlayer, we watched the performance this morning. Composing, conducting and playing of the highest order. A real treat to watch and listen.
 22.
I can see why some are grumbling about it, though. That's what 'old' people do, innnit..?
My 'Young' boys grumbled, in fact didn't stop complaining about amateur arranging, questionable String playing and intonation problems. a choir that sounded nervous, under rehearsed. Marc Almond needing serious singing lessons. Lack of musical emotion and feeling, no understanding of Bowie and his music....blah, blah, blah and on it went. It didn't stop once. So, I really didn't get to listen too much of it, as you can imagine. Kids...eh..?
 23. Someone on FB summed it up perfectly for me. 'A bit tainted, luv'. I thought Bowie and his music, was worthy of better than that.
 24.
This version by Bobby McFerrin is my favourite of that song. https://www.youtube....h?v=Yd9p_KqVCQs
I forgot about that, he also does a great version of 'Dance With Me' on the album.
 25.
Here's a nice little video review that summarises the basics of how the majority of typical pedalboard compressors work. Rack-based (and software) compressors are more sophisticated and versatile, but really no more complicated to use once you get the hang of it. I would trust the guy in the video though... he looks well dodgy to me
Jesus christ. He has a music stand and is sitting down.
