Agreed, lojo - the cadence at 3.53 is pure Heatwave IMO. https://www.youtube....h?v=xIx_HbmRnQY
He also drops in a bit of a teaser for that sequence at 1:45
his presence seemed to be everywhere....amazing songwriter....simple hooks, great arrangements...clever stuff.
All very true.
Sweet freedom, etc....absolute genius !
Yes, that one always goes under the radar because Michael McDonald was such a prolific writer himself. http://youtu.be/U-xetxYwyak Just so many, and I seemed to have liked them all over the years. I was really into his music. Another classic. http://youtu.be/aevz1jqG3SY
Just realised nobody name checked Bert Weedons book.
Dear old Bert. I did many a gig/show for him. I don't think I ever heard him talk about that book once to musicians. Although on stage, he didn't stop going on about it to the audience. Bless him, he was a rather pleasant chap.

Oh dear. Seriously Terrific musician and writer.

I use TouchOSC on iPad Air 2. This is with Cubase 8.5 and Studio One V3. It works an absolute treat with them. You can create custom maps, but if you look on the net there are plenty of folks uploading their maps for use with various DAW's. Once you get the hang of it, it is pretty easy to create maps for yourself. My maps are mostly aimed as a MIdi controller for CC#'s, along with Key switch maps. I have the basic transport stuff for Audio, but you can pretty much create anything you want for your work flow. Highly recommended, but you would more than likely need the larger screen tablets for the real estate. EDIT: I nearly forgot. Lemur is also a serious app for controlling, both on Android and iOS. https://liine.net/en/products/lemur/
Of course, if no-one is listening to the drums, it's irrelevant, I suppose.
One always listens to the Drums. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjNsiK_f6bQ -
Thanks! Lets just hope that I can at least keep up with the rest of them.
Are you the only Bassist signing up? If not, sit in on a couple of sessions and watch, if you are feeling nervous. That way you can judge if you think you are up to scratch with the rest of them, and above all, handle the arrangements sight reading wise.
For the count-in, it's 'One, Two Three Four and...', all come in on the 'Four and...'. The 'problem' is in the drums, of course, as there's a switch of emphasis early on. During the opening guitar solo riff, the drums are playing the snare on the fore-beat, except for the very first 'One...', which is bass drum. Once the vocals come in, they revert to the 'normal' back-beat. There are no hidden bars, nor 'slippage', it's only the drums that need to worry about the timing, as the bass, guitars and vocals are all keeping the same emphasis throughout, starting on the 'Four and...'. Here's a drum score, if it helps (Download and save as 'All_Alon_The_Watc_Hend_Drum.pdf'...) ...
Just had a listen - On that intro bar, the pick up with Bass, Guitar and Drums starts on the 'and' or 'up' of three. So a count of 1.2.3 should work. If everyone was to come in on four, they will be a 8th/half a beat out. Even without listening to the above track, the Drum chart you posted is pretty much the same as the one I posted - Starts on the 'and of three', unless we taking at cross purposes? If so, ignore my drivel. -

It's all in the off beat. The intro pick up bar starts on the 'and' of three. You are more than likely hearing the first chord/notes as a down beat (or your guitarist is), in fact it is on the up beat. The two links below explain the whole thing. The Snare starts playing four in the bar when the (intro} Guitar solo starts, that don't help things. I suppose Mitch Mitchell thought he was stamping some Motown or Jazz on it. That Tambourine banging out 16's along with a Vibraslap, sure makes it all sound 'Four Bars From Mars'.... Acoustic Gtr chords.
That would be 1971 for me. I started buying classical LPs then. Started playing cello at school the following year, but after that would then not play again until in my 50s. BG was 45 years away...
Wow, that is a long wait for the promised land. (In Bass term of course). But then again, it's never too late. -

The wonderful voice of Melba Moore, with the great Van MaCoy Orchestration and arrangement. Sadly he didn't see out the 70's, he was a terrific talent and right in the thick of the golden days of this style of music. Has all the ingredients, even some Clavinet, with a dollop of Xylo, Glock and Pizz strings hidden away. http://youtu.be/Ag8-rVxE5tc
