Intonation is the big thing to master. You may think you sound great at home, but when out playing with other Instruments and players, things start to sound murky. But yer. go for it.

Plenty of good (excellent) sample library patches out there, but if you don't fancy the keyboard route, why not get yourself an Acoustic Fretless Bass Guitar? Although to be honest, you can't beat the real thing (sound and feel wise)

I noticed that deal, but I have Omnisphere 2, and it seems to have everything covered. Plus, there are quite a few excellent 3rd party patches and presets appearing for it at the moment. So much to choose from these days. Some of these small and low priced developers turning out Kontakt Instruments are superb.

As dad said, the spec is on the low side for DAW work. It could be that there is a lot going on in the background (services and apps running). Wifi, Adobe updates, apple updates..etc..it all mounts up to become a hit on the CPU. Checking the windows task manager will give you some idea what's going on in that regards. Checking the resource manager in the DAW is good for checking on VST's etc, but not much help with the operating and app stuff. If you are not using the Laptop for anything else other than DAW work, it might be worth checking out this video for getting better performance out of Windows 7. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eer3HqQtJWI
